Gonna be on-island from 9/13-20 and it appears that coral blooming starts during that period (9/18-24). Since I have to dry out on 9/19 to travel the next day, I guess I get the 18th to find, observe and film the spawning. Two questions....do ya have to seriously go search for coral spawning or is there someplace where ya know you can see it (we're staying on Playa Lechi up from Yellow Submarine) and number 2, does someone in Bonaire rent video lights.

Susan, I think the Dive Friends chart is off by a day for October, since the full moon is scheduled for Oct 14, not 15 as shown.

Hi Mel, perhaps, but I know it's the information which the Bonaire Marine Park provided for this year's spawning, so I don't know if they made the error, or if the predicted dates are just what they think.

Susan, I think they just made a typo on when the full moon will be. The BMP is welcome to guess on when the spawning will be, but not on when the full moon will be!

I have never seen coral spawning, but we will be on Bonaire September 6-13. Is it possible that some will be spawning at that time?

Edward, probably not, but you might see some sponges spawning, partly because they don't seem so particular about the moon phases, and partly because they do it in the afternoons when it is easier to see!

Thanks Mel. I would love to see the spawning, but we'll manage to have fun anyway!

I witnessed brain coral spawning at sunset on a solo dive recently. I could not believe it so my wife joined me the next night and we saw it again at about the same time. Amazing to see the fish react and this was the first week of June. Not everything in nature goes by an exact schedule or cares about the moon. Being observant is the key.
