i want to go each way between newark airport & lincoln center to spend the day in town. last year the cab fare was a full c-note (ouch) each way, so now i'm thinking about PATH.

those fares are hard to beat.

my question is "which station should i use"? - should i get off at world trade center (is it even open since 9-11?) or should i transfer to the christopher st or 9th st station in the village? i'd probably take the A train or the #1 up to lincoln ctr or columbus circle - unless someone has a better idea....

There's a new PATH station at the former WTC site, and you can pick up the A-train there as well. I don't think you can get the #1 train at this time.

Otherwise, just take the 2/3 from WTC and switch to the express at another stop.

The only public transportation connected to Newark Airport to is the NJ Transit/Amtrak Northeast corridor, which you get to via the EWR airtrain. You pay a surcharge to use this station (even just to Newark Penn Station), but it is quick & efficient and should get you to NYC Penn Station in 20-25 minutes ($30 roundtrip/$22.50 for Sr citizen).

The PATH has 3 primary lines that connect NJ & NY. One runs from Newark Penn to WTC, the other 2 are from Hoboken to WTC or 33rd St (1 block from Penn Station). Not really much help to you:

Another option is to take the bus from Newark to Port Authority Bus Station (42nd & 8th Ave), however that leaves you to the mercy of the Lincoln Tunnel ($25 roundtrip):

In my opinion, the NJ Transit is the most hassle-free option and worth the $.

PS - NY Penn Station is between 7th/8th Avenue, with the NJ Transit entrance at 32nd (Long Island RR is 34th street). You will need to take a cab or subway to Lincoln Center (62nd st & 9th ave). Best Subway from Penn is #1 to 66th st.

Hope this helps - I've been commuting to NYC from NJ for 20 years.
