I suppose we all know that having a drink at a bar is something else than buying it in the shop. But at Bongo's bar they really exaggerate their prices for just one little bottle of Polar beer. My friend and I took 3 Polars each and guess what we had to pay!!!

Six beers at Fls 4,75 ($2.67) each, including the 5% sales tax, is a fairly normal bar/resort price-especially if you're on the beach with a beautiful sea view (I've seen prices in the $3-$5 (fls 5,25 - 8,75) range at some seaside places). They're actually charging fls 4,50 (+5% tax=4,75), not really an exaggerated price if you compare it to similar locations.

Come and hang out in Vail, Colorado... Those prices you mentioned seem cheap to me - even for a "non-resort" bar! I am a bar-tender a few nights a week at an off-the-beaten path bar near Vail and we charge $3.50 domestic and $4 import/micro brew. Other bars charge $4-$6. I think it is easy to forget that you are not just buying the beer but you are buying the atmosphere as well as electricity, water, rent, waitstaff, maintenence etc... and bars/resturaunts are the business of making $$, not a non-for-profit. I see nothing wrong with that as long as it seems reasonable. If it seems too much $$ then get a sixer and take a drive(not promoting drinking and driving though...) somewhere and enjoy!

$2.67 is a good price for an American-sized beer... seems like somewhat of a rip-off for one of the little bottles.

It is funny how the "s" word can mean different things to different people. We have already gotten the "s" word (over 3 ft in higher elevations)and it has made people excited for the winter season. When it does the "s" word people are happier and you see everyone get all excited. It really changes everyones mood for the better. When I lived in Michigan everyone cursed the "s" word! Funny how a little geography can change ones perspective.

By Antony Bond (Experienced BonaireTalker - Post #131) on Thursday, October 12, 2006 - 2:48 pm: |
I understand what Jeroen is saying. It is not fair to compare prices with other parts of the world. I assume that in the States that minimum wage is above the $3.00 that it is here. A Polar at Bongos is going to cost some people on Bonaire the equivalent to nearly an hours salary.
|
By Jennifer A. Rose (BonaireTalker - Post #23) on Thursday, October 12, 2006 - 3:08 pm: |
I see your point. I thought all places on Bonaire charged these prices but I have not been there yet (42 more days!!). I know that where I live there is fluctuation in prices for the same product at different resturaunts and bars. I typically will not go to a bar if I feel I can get the same thing for cheaper somewhere else unless there is something at the place that makes it worth it for me. We all have to make out own informed decsions I guess.

Ok...fair enough. However federal minimum wage in the states is $5.15 an hour. Most bars are charging more than that for a beer in the states, less in rural areas, much higher in metropolitan areas. The comparison is valid. You can buy a beer for less than minimum wage on Bonaire living in their economy. Depending on what you drink and where you are in the states a beer will not always be possible to purchase for one hour's wage.

I think we were at the bar at Captain Don's once, when Eric told the bartender that the only thing about Bonaire he would improve was the size of the beer bottles, but that he figured a bigger bottle would get warm before you finished it. The bartender disappeared and came back with a magnum sized Heineken in a bucket of ice and plunked it down in front of Eric. I think it brought tears to his eyes!

Ruth, what are the beer prices at KFC? ;-) OH wait, I might get you in trouble with the moderators I didn't mean to imply that KFC was responsible for those bathrooms Last time I was on Bon, I was waiting for my delicious chicken wrap from KFC (which was delicous by the way, fresh veggies and very hot) ;-) and had to use the ladies room very badly...so I asked the gal in the Littman's store, she directed me to "that bathroom"...I opened the door...and well...er...I must say it was the most disgusting thing I've seen in a while. Needless to say I didn't use it. As a business in the mall, I'd let the owner know that that bathroom isn't usable by customers (but maybe they know that?)

You guys crack me up! I'm not sure about the actual legislation, just that a few butchers have told me when I inquired about obtaining haggis that it is illegal in the US. One said if I could find a farmer who made his/her own, I might be able to strike a deal, but that no butcher in the US would make it for me. Of course, I still ask when I come across a private butcher shop, but so far no luck. I guess I am going to have to wait until summer when I head to Scotland for a visit.

4.50 for a Polar is a bit on the high side, but not outrageously so. I see usually see it sold cold for prices ranging from 2.00 to 3.50, but I don't go to the ocean-front resorts because (A) they're competition and (B) they're expensive.

Kevin, you can answer Greg's question, he's asking YOU where he can get the beers you mention, especially the tripels. Or, he can click on your profile and read the list of beers your restaurant carries Just don't mention price
|
By Kevin Wayne Williams (The Great Escape) (Experienced BonaireTalker - Post #210) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 8:47 pm: |
I carry nearly all of those I mentioned. As for tripels, I carry Westmalle Tripel and LaTrappe Tripel today. I should get Leffe Tripel sometime around Nov. 1 (it's on a boat from Holland right now).

Yes I saw that but I didn't notice the wet leg until you mentioned it. I might be mightily afraid of that. And of course if that is beer that constitutes a beer foul and there are severe consequences for beer fouls.
