Green Heron

This heron puts its trust completely in its camouflage colouring and most often it will only be seen when it suddenly takes flight, screaming loudly at just a few feet away. It is one of the smaller herons residing here and its stooped appearance makes it seem smaller yet. In adult birds the wings are bluish, the sides of the neck are chestnut brown and the throat and breast are striped. Stalking along the banks of the bay, through freshwater pools and along the coast, it suddenly will dart forward to catch fish, insects or even small lizards. It breeds on all three islands. Green Herons are common summer residents here in MN and I have one that takes great pleasure at startling me as I work in my yard. I imagine him sitting in wait in the shrubbery, contemplating the moment when he will flush past my head with a throaty ssskEEOOWWWW!!!!! I am sure he enjoys the stupid expressions that appear on my face, just like I did when taking great pleasure in startling my step-father as a child :-) It was always amusing to see him jump straight up in the air and make uninteligible vocalizations. Guess I'm due for a payback!

One of my favorite treks at the MN Landscape Arboretum is 'The Green Heron Trail'. Last spring after coming thru the bog, we rounded a corner to be greeted by two green herons and a carpet of yellow Ladyslipper Orchids in bloom! A real treat.

I have some mediocre pix of a green heron catching and swallowing a fish in front of the lockers at Capt. Don's...the light was coming from the wrong angle, but I wanted to capture the image anyway. Absent in my shots are the warm chestnut hue and irridescent green of his plumage - thank goodness for imagination and pictures like the one you posted above!

Yellow-Crowned Night Heron

nightheron

We were accustomed to seeing the green heron, the tri-color heron and the white ones too, but when this guy showed up in front of the chalet, we ran for our cameras. Maybe it's not that unusual for them to come out in the day, but since they are named for their night behavior, we were pretty excited.

Hey Niki, I saw this guy too in the flats near the turn-off from Kaya Sorobon, but didn't realize he was a Heron! I kept thinking of him as "ZORRO" the masked one!
