Here is a helpful site (still under development)for identification of flora and fauna on Bonaire:Naturacao

http://naturacao.100megsdns.com/index.html

Although it is in papiamentu and designed for Curacao, it is the best on-line nature guide I have found for the ABC islands.

Trees are under jerba/USO.

Who said desert islands have no life! Amazing variety. we just need to look around us. Just as in 'our' ocean.

Dara, Have you checked, perhaps from memory, Bonaire against this site? I suspect almost identical.

Hi Glen! I think that CUR has more diverse flora due to the fact that they erradicated the feral donkey/goat population a while ago. I talked with Sipke once about the studies that have been conducted to assess the impact of feral populations on the diversity of plant species. In a nutshell, BON has fewer species with a higher proportion of thorny plants and plants having chemical irritants than CUR.

I am also hoping that this section can provide a list of Field Guide references for those interested in obtaining copies. So, anybody out there who can add a reference for guides/books - please do. I left my books on island with a friend, so I can't do it myself :-(. The only one I have will provide a start:

Birds of Bonaire by Peggy Boyer Stinapa Bonaire Pub. 1984. Stinapa Nr 27. English/Papiamentu. Available at Washington Park and Flamingo Book Store.

This booklet covers the most commonly seen birds, with a description of physical characteristics, typical behavior and usual habitat. Accompanying pictures are B/W drawings.

Compliments of Ellen Muller: http://www.cura.net/dierenbescherming/publications.html
This site lists the publications: "Our Birds", "Our Animals", "Our Trees and Plants" as well as some nature posters and educational publications/videos.

Here's an article from the Caribbean Journal of Science, Vol. 39, No. 1, 100-108, 2003

A Review of the Freshwater Fishes of Curacao, with Comments on those of Aruba and Bonaire
ADOLPHE O. DEBROT

http://academic.uprm.edu/publications/cjs/Vol39a/39_100-108.pdf

Good basic description of the few freshwater fish that can be found on Bonaire.

I'm a native aquarium fish hobbyist and was curious enough to do some web searching before visiting last year for the ecoswim. I was having too much fun though to really explore beyond the coast and the many fine drinking establishments. ;]
Gonna return in a couple months for the ecoswim again and will be staying longer so I plan on finding some time to snorkle the mangroves and perhaps one of the few freshwater springs or creeks.

My husband is a Scuba enthusiast, We love Bonaire. I neither scuba nor Snorkel but am interested in the Bonaire's natural treasures. We will be on Bonaire for 8 Days in June. I would love to be part any of the environmental activities in any way I am able. Please advise if there is a way for me to do this. This will not be our last trip to Bonaire and I would like to be a positive and learning visitor.
Thank you for your response.

Yodie Spitz
