Hi, gang,
I asked Jake, and some of you already said it's a good idea, to make a special webpage dedicated to all the reefcam dwellers we gave a name. This could be interesting for the newbies, and just fun for us.
Jean Paul being a webmaster, he told me how to do webpages, so I can take care of this one, if you agree of course.
Here is Jake's authorisation :

"Martine (and anyone else), if you can cobble together a "ReefCam Cast" Web page using ReefCam image, nicknames, and real fish information about the fish/critter involved, I can format it and make it a permanent part of BonaireTalk - even with links on every BT WebCams page.
Jake"

It has to be very simple, just a pic ( but necessarilly from the reefcam ) including the real name and details of the fish and the nickname we gave. I think the best would be the small sized pictures. I count on you for the details :o)
You can post on this thread all the archived pics of our little friends. Then we'll make our choice.
I know Annie has a pretty good collection, and she surely will be a GREAT help.
Any suggestion and comment yours will be welcome.
Please just use this thread for this purpose. Thanks.
Could be great to do this in one week...
Martine

Great idea, would be great for the newbies. Using my memory, which is shaky at best.

Damsel Fish = Charlotte
Blue Headed Wrasse = Bluebeard
Tang = Tweety (not seen in awhile)
Cleaner Goby = Slim
Cooney = Beldare
Surgeon Fish = Dr Pepper
Porcupine Fish = Puff

and don't forget Jake, Linda, Yana, Bas, Grendal, Blikje, and Mandy.

To give a moe specific name, Charlotte is a yellow tail damselfish (losing her blue juvenile spots. Tweetie is a blue tang, but was in the yellow juvenile color phase. We may not be seeing him because he grew up. Then there are the coral heads, which were named a couple years ago and that Meryl resurrected from the archives:

cn

I assume the corals are probably all species of Porites, except, for Brains. But someone would have to do a direct check on that, since reef cam doesn't show enough detail to be sure.

I might note that Rusty has suggested that Smokey (for Smokey the Bear) is a more flattering name for Pimples.

This is her Smokey Gif along with a relatively current reef cam capture. Certainly seems to be resemblance to me.

Hi everyone. I am such a stranger here. I haven't posted in so long. I thank each and everyone one of you for keeping this going so good. We are to return to Bonaire this June. We are taking a friend that hasn't been there yet. That will be so FUN... :-)

I think nobody don't mind any other yellow tang appearing on the cam remains called "Tweetie", even if the real one has grown up...

Color of thread name changed to Red, Martine.

Might I suggest that you create a four page "mini-site"?

Main Page for Bonaire WebCams Cast of Characters - Explains repeat visitors to the ReefCam/StreetCam are named; rationale for naming; etc. Has links to the other pages.

ReefCam Fish Page - Covers ReefCam Fish (things with fins)

ReefCam Everything Else - Covers Shiva and the coral heads, and spot, etc.

Other Cam Critters - Landshark, Grendel, Mandy, Blikie, etc.

Use a temporary Web space, like Yahoo! Geocities or something you might have on a server you use (in a subdirectory, perhaps) to design the pages, and once done, I'll move it all over here to BT and apply additional formatting as appropriate.

Nice to see so much BT community support for this great project idea Martine had!

It is truly amazing how you started up this BWCWW.
Being ofcourse BonWebCamWho'sWho.
This would even make it more appealing to watch the cams.
And don't forget the long , hard and "sporty" discussions we are going to get about any possible flaws in identification !!!
I am looking forward to do my bit.
Do foto's taken of the "dwellers "by BT divers at the scene count as well?
Make it a good one everyone!:-)
Jos.

Jos, the problem is copyrights rules, so that's why reefcam pics are no problem. Now, if we miss one dweller's "face" on a reefcam, perhaps some BTers own pics could be available. Must first ask our moderator.

If the person contributing a substitute picture is the one who took the picture him/herself and is willing to grant us (BonaireTalk/NetTech/Stroke Of Color) unrestricted rights to use the image on the BonaireTalk Web site, then it can be used. Otherwise not.

We must find a name for them, as for the tarpon, butterflyfish, eagle spotted eagle ray and princess parrotfish. I know you'll find the apropriate names.

Martine, :-)

Slim, the cleaner goby, is out of focus because he is on the surface of the lens. Doubt if he's ever managed to float by at a reasonable distance to be in sharp focus. You could put the blurry pic on with the explanation, and maybe a non-reefcam detail, if someone can supply one.

Barney, I think, is a joke (an American children's television joke)... Not a real nicknamed fish, but I could be wrong....

Mx`k we ever named the parrotfish because they are so abundant and have so many phases and different markings that they don't seem like "one personality"

Can anyone remember the names we briefly used for squid? I know I have a good squid on reefcam, but I will go to bed rather than boot up the other computer and look for it.

Niki...we really did name that fish Barney...he hovered off and on for a week or so...I haven't seen him in a while and don't know what kind of a fish he is... :-)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Niki Harris (Experienced BonaireTalker - Post #683) on Friday, February 28, 2003 - 4:51 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

I think the barracuda was named Spike, if I understand the post above from Freddie.

Was Barney captured at a further distance, showing his whole self? He's so vague and secretive peering in at us. Until we can say what he is... I think he's a no-show.

Jos, Eddie the Eagle sounds really familiar! Maybe a case of Great Minds Thinking Alike, for I think that was suggested for him last year! He also has not returned and therefore not gained a chorus of fans trying to call him by name!

We probably have the example-captures for each personality. No wait, the land creatures must have really good captures out there. Actually, Frank was a dove or pigeon, wasn't he? And wouldn't you know, you don't see daily vigils of pigeons any more... Did someone quit dropping crumbs out there?

Now we need the real fish names and brief commentary about them. Sarah, you out there?

I don't think Barney ever did have a picture that wasn't a close up...he kept popping his eyeballs into the cam...there was a lot of speculation about what he was..okay, I'll go back into the archives this weekend for the FINAL answer! ;-)

Well, once again, thank you, I think this challange couldn't be possible without your cooperation pals.

Martine, I think you've got it! Well done. I wouldn't force the issue of all the unnamed fish, because it's the sort of activity which evolves from the commentators when fish are making a big presence. (Such as "making sand") You can certainly go ahead with what you have.

I'm off for a few days, bonne chance, bon travail, bonne soiree... talk to you a bientot. Get the other BTers busy writing text!

Martine. I searched and searched the archives for a crisp pic of Slim. I don't think there is one because he is always sucking on the cam, therefore to close for a crisp pic. Annie B.

Well, I admit it is hard to tell who it really might be but the 5/7/02 8:04 photo doesn't look like Charlotte and it's just really not clear if the eyes match in the other two...at any rate I thought the photos might stir the memory of some of those on line back (Niki?) who might know more about the Barney fish! ;-)

Cyndi Lee, I can help with behavior and IDs of the fish if someone will teach me how to do it online. I love IDing fish and learning about them. I'm so computer illiterate, at times an Etch-a-Sketch seems complex. If my computer guru hadn't gone to be warm in Florida for the winter, I'm sure he could help me, but there he is in a t-shirt while I'm in 3 layers of clothes! How about a sub-page with BTer's on the cams? I'll bet everyone has their own little stash of pics of them in front of the cam. If you guys can teach this naive computer user how, I'll help.

Bob, I'd tell you what reverse sex is but Jake would probably delete it! No, it's really that when the dominant male of a pair/school dies, the dominant female becomes male. It's like these beetles I learned about in college, when a pair of them meets, the larger one gets to be the male. So then if that one meets an even bigger bug, it then is the female. Must be confusing at cocktail parties! Cynde Lee, your spreadsheet is awesome! Great idea.

Cynde,

http://www.oldbonairetalk.com/newsgroup/messages/626/webcam_species-73634.xls doesn't open a formatted document in IE 5.1.5 running in OS 9.2.2 on my Mac. Should it?? Another Mac/PC difference??

It comes up in alphanumerics scattered about, perhaps the formatting 'code'.

hi glen, hmmm...i will try to save it as something else rather than an excel file...didn't think about that one! Bookie thanks, and email is on the way to you! The sheephead is a local species in our california waters, and does the sex reverse thing too...like the parrot fish does I believe (now i am going to go have to look up more parrot info!)

Hi Glen, I'm over at Bob's on his PC. Cynde's link opened up in an IE window and became a spreadsheet. I tried to open the May-June visitors file Martin made on my Mac at home a while back and saw scattered characters not a chart. But if I saved it to disk and opened it in Excel, I could see it. You could try that.

Hope you're surviving the winter weather. Come see us on Bonaire... ? Niki and Bob

Hi, Niki,

I suspect the save and open would work-- will try tomorrow. Thought Cynde's intent was for the spreadsheet to open in all IE so just telling her of the fact. Scattered characters here for me.
