Mary Lou,

Click on the "Formatting" icon at the bottom of this page for a wide range of options. But yes, the rule is no cutesy GIFs anywhere but in the Community Chat section.

Hey Jake - I found cranberry walnut bagels at our local Safeway bakery... I'll have to get some from both places so you can do a taste test!

We had bagels and smoked salmon for dinner last night! I saw a reference on another board to something which sounded like a spread.. can't remember what you called it, but was it cream cheese you were asking for?

Thanks for the tips! Ok no gifs here, I do like the pics. I will try my hand at adding some tomorrow. On my way home now, off to a hypnotist/sleight of hand guy tonight. Anything to break up the winter blues. Have a good weekend everyone, mine doesn't start until tomorrow night. Good night, Mary Lou

....continued from the previous thread. I never knew we had named Shiva - how appropriate.

You know, things were kind of slow on this thread earlier this week and last. Is everyone just bored at work on Friday? :-)

Stef - that would be "schmear" - cream cheese with stuff mixed into it (e.g. chives, lox, veggies, walnuts & raisins, etc.) and sure - if you find fresh schmear (we can get Philly here), that would be great!

does it come in "fresh"? We have several brands here, Philly being the best, but we do have "tubs" galore with all kinds of flavors.. I love the honey & nut on a sweet bagel, and of course salmon spread on anything savory!

I plead ignorant on the "fresh" part, though.. you mean like home made or something?

Igor. Thanks for starting the threads here today. I don't think I can start one for at least the next 5 weeks. You understand I know. Welcome to all the new chatters. Annie B.

OK, here is the schmear story from NYC. A schmear is simply much less cream cheese( or any other spread, lox cream cheese, even chopped liver)spread on a bagel. If you do not ask for a schmear you will find yourself with a SLAB of cream cheese on your bagel, which some people like, but others simply want a schmear.
Now, you may have some heathen food naming schemes in NH, but here , that's a schmear.
Now people are gonna say to you that they looked in the dictionary and found that schmear (shmir) is "an aggregation of things", and in fact that is an accepted meaning, as in " he bought the whole schmear", but when it comes to bagels..

Seb,

That's the live application of schmear vs. the purchase of separate schmear in a container - two related but very different things.

And yes Stef - fresh means home made (by a schmear specialist, or someone akin to such, such as a shop specializing in bagels :-) ).

Jake
