My Home page lists the local weather at 10 degrees (F) and fair (seemingly a contradiction). How is it where you are?

Hi Michael, must have been a case of "great minds think alike" with the fish pictures! Is that a rock hind - the big grouper-like one? I wish I could go and check him out personally, we're all missing Bonaire terribly!

Friday we'll have 37 for the hi & 17 for the low. I'm glad I don't live up north!! Great pics from today. Too bad I missed them

It is 69 now, going up to 75 today, but later this week back to 32 here in Houston.

Minus 23C in Toronto (see Jill's post), minus 22C here in Edmonton (plus windchill, minus 34C)and pretty much the same for the 2000 miles in between.

We Canadians are either tough or crazy or a little bit of both. What do you think?

Karl, I would have to say that Canadians tend to be crazy, and maybe a little tough. I work with a couple of 'em so I can get away with that. I will, however, refrain from further comment about it being cold here, seeing as it's all the way up to a balmy 14 degrees (-10C). You live in the area where snot freezes upon contact with the outside air. That may be a little too vivid for those who don't understand it, but for the rest of us it's mighty descriptive and generally accurate!

Question ....

I'm planning a diving vacation with my family to Bonaire next month (Feb. 13-18th). My children (ages 11,14, & 16) and I are novice divers. Any recommendations for reasonably shallow dive spots (>60-70 ft.)

Second question .... we'll probably attend Mass at a Catholic parish while we are there. Will nice shorts suffice or do we need to pack slacks or dresses?

"Any recommendations for reasonably shallow dive spots (<60-70 ft.)?"

Getting my math symbols confused.

Here's the pic of the cam being photographed... I fully expect whoever took that picture to post it for the rest of us.

I've got an older one. I'll have a look for it and post it later....

All the dive spots are within that range. Bonaire has very few deep dives. I believe the Hilma Hooker was the deepest dive for us.

Don't worry too much about staying shallow in Bonaire... just about every dive site on the island has plenty to see in the less than 60' range. Be sure to get a boat trip or two over to Klein Bonaire as well. The walls may drop off to 100'+, but there's so much to see above that there's no reason to go deep.

As for the dress code for Church, I would say you'll probably want to pack one nice pair of slacks. It seems like everyplace else on the island is fine with the dress shorts, but I would feel self-conscious going to Church in shorts.

Most sites on Bonaire can be dove at less than 60 feet and many of them are great in the less than 40 foot range. The only dive site that is called a deep dive from a boat is the Hilma Hooker, but since wrecks bore me I usually go shallower on the reef beside it anyway.

Hilma Hooker was our deepest dive as well, only because I wanted to see the ship from towards the bottom looking up. One thing to note about that site is that like the others, you can still see an awful lot in the 30'-50' range. The highest point on the ship (she's sitting on her port side) is only in the 50' range if my memory serves.

A balmy 18F right now in Chicago, down to single digits tonight. Just got my geezer mobile washed during lunch to clean off some of the road salt scum while it's still sunny. Can you say "Wind Chill?" lol

BTW, thanks guys for the info on Church and diving depths. Very helpful. I picked Bonaire for our dive trip based on recommendations from the Rodale board for diving with children.

martin, you will have a great time. comb through the "topics" at the bottom of the page and you can search for loads of info that folks have posted about the island. everything from eating to sleeping to diving, with kids!

I know, there is another stay off the bottom on top of the concrete, people don't read, I notice this in my work and I see it happen on the cams.

Oh, Martin, that is a wonderful shot!! How neat that you were able to actually "meet" her after seeing her on the Webcam! I know what you mean about the reading That is what I "teach and preach" all day (except I am teaching children with learning disabilities as opposed to grown-ups who should know better!)

Martin B., No we don't know each, at least your name means nothing to me. But I have a horrible memory for names, just ask Angela and Cinthie. I looked at your profile to see if you had an email that had your last name as part of the address. I be the only Linnea, but BT has several Martin's already. I am also one of a number of USA left coasters on BT.

I missed the sunset pics from tonight and I'm too lazy at this point to go back and pull them from the archives. I'll just close out the day and this thread with the lights of BOPEC.
