Not knowing what time it is, is giving me time bends For you Europeans good morning, you Asians good evening and the rest of you good night. This is so confusing, but it is still night on Bonaire! The dive lights have gone out.........

tom, boy did i get it wrong! i thought the words to "winter wonderland", where it says "In the meadow we can build a snowman,
then pretend that he is Parson Brown." I thought is said "in the meadow where it is farce and brown" until a couple of years ago!

bobby, nope (well, that is what jake and linda say anyway)...just the attraction for their 2 seconds of fame! here is what the cam looks like, this is charlotte the resident damsel fish that has been there for about 2 years now! she lives in the whole in the mooring block.

Blue and Cynde,
I wish I had taken my camera on the dive Dec 2 from Jake's back yard. The whole time I was hovering there holding up all those signs (about 15 minutes) Charlotte was just sitting under the web cam like Tweety in that picture above. She looked like she was reading my signs and waiting to see what the next one said. Every time I would hold up a new sign, she seemed to tilt like she was suddenly taking more interest again. It was a riot. I was laughing so hard it was affecting my bouyancy.
The second time I went to the web cam from the boat I had my video camera with me. She just kept popping out of her hole in the block to chace off a big parrot fish that kept getting too close. So I wasn't able to get a shot of her under the cam.

Blue,
No coney around the cam when I was there. Just Cahrlotte. You know how those Damsel fish are. They run off anyone they don't like around there.

I love to watch them chase big fish away from there little coral head or other territory. On the first day I was in Bonaire this last trip, I was watching two squid slowly moving along over some coral. Suddenly, one of them got too close to a damsel's home. She shot out and head butted the squid. Scared the squid. He sqirted ink and shot about 3 feet ahead of the other one.

I was so mad that I didn't have my video to record that action. When I was in Roatan earlier this year, a damsel came out and attacked my video housing. She head butted the front of the housing twice. Maybe she was seeing her reflection. Made for some great video. Most of them hide when the video housing gets close. It probably looks like a big mouth to them.

So Mike,
u think it's the video housing that scares them away? :) Sorry, I just couldn't resist!

lol mike. our state marine fish, the garibaldi is also a damsel and very territorial. i started volunteering at the ocean institute in dana point, and there is an exibit with a garibaldi, kelp bass, white fish, and a 15 pound lobster. it was crawling across his "farm" and it was head butting it! it was a crack up! the lobster just kept slowly moving and finally got off the rock!

most likely, it saw it's reflection in the lens. they think it is another damsel, and they are protecting their territory. if you take a mirror with you and show the damsel it's reflection, it will attack the mirror. michael had a garibalidi attack his mask once, although i think he may have provoked it a bit by being macho around it's farm! lol!

here is another rare bonairian breed...the little beer can that she is, protecting the Richter household!

Cynde, I used to keep Cichlids from lake Malawi at one time, and there was a mirror in the tank. They used to provide us with lots of entertainment. Just like you described above. They were mouth brooders. I really miss not having my fish anymore. Annie B.
