I thought I would begin the day with these lovely morning colours. The day here is very grey and raining again, so I shall just have to keep looking at Bon to cheer myself up. Annie b.

That's funny! It DOES look like chicken legs! I didn't make it to Bonaire this year, but am going to Cozumel on 11/16, it's just going way too fast. It will be here and gone before you know it.. I bet Olaf is starting to have some PBD big time! I love looking at Bonaire pics....

Annette...looking at your pictures of the divers going in. The ground looks awfully rocky. Is it just that beach, or are they all like that?

No, you're not alone...just looking at those web pictures of the divers kicking up sediment and hoping I have better buoyancy control than that.

Lee,
The beaches are made up of dead coral. There are small sandy beaches in front of some of the resorts. It's very neat looking. The older coral is very white and the more recent washed in is darker.

Yuck .. another day's work done ..
I guess it's kicking in ... :o(

Kelly my love .. I took my normal pictures with a digital cam, so it's not really a prob to share those. But I'm waiting for my UW pics to get developped (Sat. morning). Don't know how they'll be, cuz visability wasn't too good. Furthermore I'm a little bit busy to get back to work. I'll try and start my report tonite ..
So it's just waiting for some pics ...

And Lee .. the 'beaches' are indeed made out of coral. When in 1999 Lenny wiped through the Caribean, it didn't really hit Bon, but it caused some very rough sea (high waves, little flooding). This caused all the coral that was no deeper than 5/6m was wiped away. This dead coral has been used for/pilled up at the beaches. Almost every shore-entry is very rocky, so if you go diving either bring some big fins with separate shoes, or some shoes/slippers you can easily carry with you when diving (I clicked my sandals to my BCD). If not for the rocks, do it againts stonefish or (what's the name in english, zee-egels) ...

You are right about the lack of buoyancy control by some people .. it's a pity quite a lot of divers just go in, without getting their buoyancy under control ...

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Ginny Stokes on Wednesday, November 6, 2002 - 2:36 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

And even before Lenny, almost all of the shore diving sites had a coral-rubble entry. You need dive booties with a hard sole, not the light-weight tropical kind, or else sandals that you take in the water with you if you have full-foot fins. Whenever we get to our dive spot for the day, we scout around for the best actual point to start wading out. The good news is that the surf is usually relatively calm, so one can pick out a relatively smooth entry spot. If you go back in the archives, there have been numerous discussions with advice about the best techniques for shore diving in Bonaire. You will love it!

Lee,
The coral made it a little hard for me. Just make sure you have good booties. With all the gear on I had to go very slow and my buddy helped me a little. Place some air in your BC, walk out a little and then lay down in very shallow water and put your fins on and off you go.

Hello everybody, I am back from work and bachelor for 3 days. Jean Paul is on a business journey to Germany. How nice to see all the pics you posted during the day and read your messages. It helps to forget this rotten rainy day and those to come. I am very happy tonight ( not because Jean Paul is away mdr), but because I bought our tickets to...Mauritius (Indian ocean). We'll stay from november 28th till december 19th. The beaches are idyllic but the dives are one million times more beautiful on Bonaire (my preference always will go to Bonaire). Our goal : dive, rest, dive, dive, rest, dive and dive. Wish you a nice evening, perhaps I catch you later.

Anita, I purposely avoided "eat" cause I stopped smoking two month ago... You understand why. Anyway, most op people in Mauritius are Indians, that means all sorts of delicious curries... Argh !
