We're having a replacement Air Conditioner installed. We've had two fail on us in the last month (all seems to happen at once! Arg!) - the first was repairable, but the second one was not. Very annoying.

Hi Annie and Maria,
Waiting for the potatoes so thought I'd peek in. The dog is allergic to something....we're not sure what. She is almost nine so it isn't something she's had all her life. Been in and out of the vets all summer :(........but, what can you do when they are like a member of the family. She has a bad rash and is losing her hair. Hopefully the meds they gave her today will help to clear it up.

Carol. Those symptoms sound exactly the same as what my old doggie used to suffer from. Turned out he was allergic to grass mites. Glad to see you love your doggies as much as us. Just like kids eh! Do you not have your doggie insured? Annie b.

No, we didn't have her insured........should have though. She's had surgery on both hind legs for torn tendons, plus other bits and pieces over the years....I advise everyone with a new puppy to get the insurance.....you just never know.

Only the budgie left now, and she's old too. We decided no more for the moment, as lots of changes happening hoping to emigrate to NZ one day if the opportunity arrises. But its very tempting to go out and get another one, as the house is so quiet.

Annie, you will be welcome anytime, Lots of spare rooms, houses are so cheap over there compared to here. I know what you mean about security, I have to lock my doors now, as there's no one to bark if anyone's lurking. (its funny you feel safer with a dog around, and mine was just a little mutt, but she did have a good bark.

Maria,

A friend and co-worker just recently (as of yesterday) emigrated to NZ from the states. Actually, he's irish, came here to work here about 9 years ago and married an american girl a few years ago. He's actually the reason why I have a job - when he announced his plans to leave, they hired me to replace him.

Anyway, he had 2 cats that went along with them, and the quarantine period isn't too bad - a month. Also, you can visit them every day in quarantine, and apparently it's a very humane facility. He sent the cats along on Monday - they had to do a stop-over in LA and be checked out by a vet there, and certified healthy before the last leg of the journey.

When he was making all the preparations, getting them all their shots, etc., the vet told him that, at least for cats, they don't usually have to be sedated - they usually just curl up and go to sleep.

Hi Susan,
Thanks for the helpful info, I will have to look into it, and find out a bit more.
Good luck with the new job.

Maria,
No problem. And thanks - it's actually turned out quite well. John didn't actually leave the company for 2 months after I started, so he was there to train me. He's been gone for about a month from the company - he and his wife went to see the parents in North Carolina (hers) and Ireland (his) before going on this exodus.

He really amazes me: I knew him when he first came over to this country -he got a job working where I worked. He and his wife had settled in, bought a house, and everything. But I guess some people really have a wanderlust - they decided to sell everything, pack up the kitties and move to NZ sight-unseen, and hope to find jobs once they get there.

Luckily, the sale of the house plus savings gave them enough money to put in a NZ bank to get them their immigration papers, as well as a little nest egg to travel around and make a decision where to settle down and find work. Although, from what he was saying it sounded like Dunedin was favored at this point - isn't that where Janeece lives, too?
