Good morning Carol,

Interesting "object" on the cam. Beats me! Looks man-made?

I wonder if we'll get another hint?

Cheers,

Bill

Carol,

Are you near the West Nile Virus breakout that I caught briefly on the news last night?

Bill

Hi Bill,
Hmmmmm.....never thought about man-made! There have been four cases of West Nile Virus in Portsmouth, which is a neighboring city - across the Elizabeth River. None so far on this side of the river, but I am sure it is coming.

Carol

Carol,

Last year we had the first dead birds diagnosed with West Nile and this summer all through Southwestern Ontario many dead birds have been confirmed. In Winnipeg Manitoba, home of the Godzilla mosquito, they have also had positive confirmation of West Nile.

So far I don't think any people have been confirmed. I understand that for healthy people the effect is like a flu, so many cases would likely never be identified anyway.

All quiet on the cams this morning.

Bill

Bill,
The four cases were crows.....I heard on the news last night that the virus is striking younger people ("some as young as forty"! - made me feel good)- I guess in the past only "older" people have bee affected.
It is quiet on the cams this morning - I was hoping for another visit from Shiva.

Carol

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Bill & Cheryl Rathborne on Sunday, August 4, 2002 - 10:26 am:     Edit PostPrint Post

Yes those Shiva visits are something else! I wonder if it is the plastic as Jake has thought or whether it is extra sensitive to HF electricity. Maybe it is getting a "buzz"??

Just better not decide to eat the whole camera!

What is today's definition of young and old anyway? I know we are not supposed to trust anyone over 30 - passed that gate decades ago! - but I get the idea that the old-young barrier is moving down to 20!

Anyway - too "old" now to care.

Cheers,

Bill

oh my gosh Gerrit! 400 nautical miles???? wow, that must have been fantstic! Glad you are enjoying your retirement...we are good, haven't been diving in a month, but we hope to get out next weekend for a beach dive at least! Where all did you go in the North Sea??? Did you see anything interesting out in the deep blue?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Gerrit Blonk on Sunday, August 4, 2002 - 3:08 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

The trip was from Denmark Oostzee (east sea)via a 100 Kilometers long channel in Germany, then the Noordzee (north sea), in the open sea. With sometimes continue sailing for 24 hours, without seeing anything but WATER. Ofcourse we see also our RADARscreen, and the other navigating equipement. Oh yes, we looked a few times in the face of a seadog (sea-lion) and a smallest dolphin (Bruinvis / brownfish in Dutch).
And we have observated the GREEN FLASH at sunset!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Gerrit Blonk on Sunday, August 4, 2002 - 3:27 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

Cynde, if you look at the north-west part off Germany you see a town "KIEL", and also "CUXHAVN".
Then we sail north off the islas from Germany and th Netherlands to a island called TEXEL. (that is in the north-west part of Holland. We had Easterly winds force 3 - 4 bfrt all the time. Due too bad wheater we go inside Holland for the last part of the trip to Amsterdam and IJmuiden. In rain and strong wids from the wets force 5 -6 bfrt.

Cynde, that flash have a duration of two seconds!during decending the last part of the visible sun. There must be very clear conditions on the horizon, that´s why its seldom seen.

Hi Gerrit, Carol, Cynde, Barbara and others.
How are you. Gerrit, we share a hobby. My hubby and I are also eclipse chasers and we love to catch the green flash or sun distortions at sun set on the sea. These two pics have been taken on...Bonaire and I would like to offer them to you to make you feel happy. I feel amazed with your own green flash pic, good job. Thanks for the pics of Bart. Great catch too. Hope everyone had a nice week end, I have been working . I Will stay a little while with you, if you are still there and go to bed shortly, it is time for us.

Hi Maria,
I have had a hard day at the airport today too, but I think it will quieten a bit tomorrow till the end of the month. It's easy to witness a green flash but as gerrit said, the sky must be perfectly pure, no clouds or mist, and it's better to see at the sea side. I'll explain you how to observe in my next email. OK ? These pics have been shot with my telescope and the boat aside in one of the two Bonaire tugs.

martine and maria, you have probably gone to bed by now...maria, my mom has settled back in and is very thankful that her house was not burned!...as far a shiva, there is a red plastic "filter" lens on the camera, shiva has "sucked" it off a couple of times and then decided it wasn't as tastey as she thought so then spit it out, Jake had to go out and put it back on...
