Good morning everybody,
Today is Bastille day and I am quite fine this morning. The great military parade will start in a couple of minutes on the Champs Elysees. It seems it won't rain... West Point students are joining their french equivalent ( Saint Cyr and Polytechnique military schools )for the parade. New York fire men are invited too and will assist the parade in president Chirac's tribune. I have to go for work, have a nice day all, see you later.

I copied this from CNN....

A man attending France's Bastille Day celebration parade pulled out a rifle just after President Jacques Chirac passed by, but was quickly overpowered by police, a spokesman for the Paris police department said.

Hi everybody,
Back from work ! Yes Kay, you're right, a man holdind a 22 long riffle was arrested on the Champs Elysees. I just saw it on the french TV midday news, but no further comments...Let's see what they'll say on the evening news. This evening we'll have a nice firework at eiffel Tower whose theme is Victor Hugo. Firework will be rythmed with music and V.Hugo poems. Won't go, too crowed, but I can see the firework from the terrace of the building. We planed to go out for diner (japanese). Did anybody solve the "cleaner mystery" ?

It was me after all. Bas had suggested that pressure and salt water would be good for my toe, so I enlarged the toe hole I already had in an old boot, and wandered on in. We'll see if it did my toe any good or not.

Bas will be in charge of ReefCam cleanings while I'm away too :-)

Jake,
I have always heard that salt water is good for cuts, rashes (poison ivy) etc. A couple of years ago my husband slipped at the edge of the water and sliced his hand open on any oyster shell. The doctor pumped him full of antibiotics because he said salt water was full of nasty microoragnisms that could cause bad infections. It was in the Chesapeake Bay though, so I imagine that water is filthy compared to Bonaire water :)

Jake, I was quite sure it was you on the cam...
Talking about injuries cured in salt water, I don't know. I rasped my left hand against coral just at the beginning of our stay in Bonaire, and it only cured back in Paris (two week later). Salt water seemed to dig more each day the injury instead of healing it, and I needed to spread an antibiotic cream to stop a small infection. Then ?

Cynde - I did in fact see the file fish - he/she stayed on the other side of the mooring from me pretty much the whole time I was cleaning the ReefCam (water's very thick with stuff today, by the way).

For anyone visiting the ReefCam in the coming weeks, look closely at the mooring line going up from the mooring, there are at least a half dozen well camouflaged slender filefish hanging out right next to the line and the bottom of the mooring buoy.

As far as the salt water on cuts goes - I understand a salt water rinse is good, but that repeated and prolonged exposure of salt water on wounds (as occurs with divers) actually prevents the cut from healing because the wound nevers dries out - I've seen this both personally and discussed it with many others, and Martine's example is common.

I did make sure to rinse my toe with Betadine and H202 (Hydrogen Peroxide) after my short dive today, to help minimize any infection from occurring from the ocean...

Jake

About the aborted attempt against President Chirac. That's quite true. The young man arrested this morning truly wanted to kill our President. He succeeded to shoot twice but didn't hit Pt Chirac. He was stopped by spectactors and kept by the police. He is 23 years old and is known as an extreme right militant. After beeing questionned, he seems to talk nonsense and has been transfered to a psychiatric center. Well, I think I am going to bed, watch a video and...sleep. Goodnight all, see you tomorrow.

annie b....fish behaviour is a very cool thing. damsels (such as charlotte, and california's state marine fish, the garabaldi) will stake out a "claim" and farm it. if anything get's on their parcel, they will do just about anything to get it off. and they will reside in that area for quite some time...the male garabladi will farm red algae, to attract a female to lay eggs on his "farm."...other fish hang together in schools, and don't necessarily have a "claim, or stake." i just wonder if the filefish are loners, and such, and stake out a claim. charlotte has been living in the hole in the mooring block on the cam since i began watching going on 2 years now!

Cynde, I find fish behaviour very interesting. I think I understand about the schools, don't they band together like that so they look BIG. Hotlips does look rather singular at this moment in time. As you probably know, I am new to the ocean fishes, so must forgive me if I sound a bit silly at times.Annie B.

annie b...i'm not sure if the big schools (bait balls) stick together to look big, i know that they also stick together so they will have a better chance of survival in such a large group...again, i know the fish id pretty good, but not necessarily the behaviour of some. our last day on bonaire, as we couldn't dive due to off gas time before you fly, i did a fish behaviour snorkel class with sand dollar dive and photo. it was really cool as annie (i think that was her name) knew all the places where the babies, and others hung out, and also thier behaviour patterns. i think i am going to have to buy that book so i will have my answers! i just know a lurker out there knows, come on...fill us in on the file fish! maybe it is hanging out as the cleaner gobies are still on the cam, and it is just liking the grooming! there was a french angel that hung out for quite a while on the cams, we named him pierre...

Hi there, I'am back, and guess why...
Annie, talking about fish behaviour I have a nice story to tell. It happened when we saw the whale shark. On that day there were million of small babies anchovies schools that barjaks and tunas were purchasing. They manage to cut the big school in small parts to eat the "separated". A small group then decided to protect with us and I don't know what happened with them, except a small little anchovy who decided to be my buddy and stuck my mask and my tank all the time ( jean paul had it filmed), and just when we returned to the pier he just met there another school and we separated. How strange this little anchovy buddied with me during 30 our 40 minuts looking for protection.
