I may be selfish, but I wish this piece would be moved. Can not see what is on it even when enlarged nor can we see the fish which are usually around Willy in the morning.

FREE WILLY!!!

Tom, I'll be on island tomorrow and I'll file a complaint about this for you. I noticed the pice has been placed by 2 divers yesterday around 16:30 or 17:30 (memory failure...).

Back to the last 3 hours of work before leaving...

Good morning. :-) Hmmm. I agree with Stan and Tom - the sign needs to go! (Free Willy!! lol) It does seem to be keeping the fish away. The beach chairs haven't been straightened in ages, either, and that slight tilt on the north cam is getting on my nerves. tee hee All this affects me like I'm seeing a house that is messy PLUS a picture is hanging crooked on the wall - now two! I want to go clean it up. :-) One MORE gripe, they haven't been turning the pier lights on!

Stan, I'm having to work, too, but mainly just "holding the fort down" because the majority of staff is taking this week. They give us an extra week we can use before the end of January and most take this week - but I always save mine for a January dive trip. (18 days & counting) :-)

Good Morning and Afternoon for some of you,

Yes, that "sign" looks like trash around Willy. I am not sure this art exhibit is a good thing. Whine, Whine, Whine. Very observant on the pier lights, Kathy. Maybe everyone on Bonaire is on Christmas vacation too.

Going to warm up here to 48 degrees today.

Safe trip Martin and Angela! :-)

I recall Bonaire being an underwater nature reserve with extreme rules on protecting everything below the waterline. Not sure that signs or exhibitions fit in there. It is not as if there is not enough to see underwater.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Tom Cousino (Extraordinary BonaireTalker - Post #1264) on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 9:21 am:     Edit PostPrint Post

Smack, I would go to work, but the Boss says it is my day to be with Ben and Katie:-{)} We are going to clean the house a bit, then go shopping and see "The Incredibles" - again. I love school vacations.

Kathy, A messy house is not a bad thing, a dirty house is;-{)}

All, I actually like Fred Ros' work and wish I could be on Bonaire and visit this exhibit. I have contacted him through his web site and explained my displeasure with the placement of this particular piece.

If you have not already, I encourage you to visit his web pages regarding 40 Feet Underwater at:

http://www.40feetunderwater.com/index.php

My understanding is that self promotion and promoting those from which you gain favors is not acceptable on BT. I believe that if the Mr. Ros was to encourage people to visit the works on BT that would be in violation of policy as there is an admission fee. I might be wrong.

Jan, yes, I was thinking the same thing when I logged on and the sign was still there. There might be an explanation for this. I was thinking, and everyone knows that can be dangerous, but here goes, MAYBE, those divers were swimming around and found that sign floating around and tried to take it back up, but the current was too strong, and they gently laid it down so not to damage anything and someone will be back today to fetch the thing out. Wishful thinking, but it could be. I guess we will have to stay tuned in for the answer. Hopefully, those divers reported this to someone when they surfaced yesterday.

It does seem to be scaring the fish away though :-(

Tom, looked at the work and I like it too, and I also like the idea! But why not exhibit in the Ijselmeer or North Sea, where it would liven up the underwater world! I have seen my fair share of diving sites, and Bonaire still rates top! On the webcam it just does not look very good, all that is missing is an old washing machine and some car tires. Anyway, I am new here, so I should not moan too much...

Just a quick For Your Information:

The art exhibit is in the shallows. The depth is from about 15 feet, where the top of one of the pieces is almost at the surface, to about 35 feet, where the art is held with large cable ties and secured to cement blocks. There is not a lot of reef where the art is -- mostly coral rubble with a few juveniles flitting about. In my humble opinion, no fish were injured in the art exhibition.

Some of the pieces are tied down with yellow nylon rope and I believe the knots are slipping. Maybe one of the pieces got loose and the current took it to the wreck.

The art is covered with algae and is providing an excellent spot for budding graffiti artists.

I'll call wanna dive and let them know that the art is on the wreck.

Stan, the one on the right is the "I'm not this fat in person" one, and the left one is the one we couldn't figure out before, - something like "The weather is great, the bar is great, too".

Tom, I'll go look at the 40 ft under site in a few. Thanks for posting it! Also, my (grown) children joke with me that one of their earliest memories was of me with a vacuum cleaner. hehe I even make the beds in hotels before the maid comes. I have a problem! (but a very clean house) lol

Great idea, Mare! Why didn't I think of that? I'm sure they are not purposely letting the art work just float around down there.

I like the art work as well and wished I could see it too, just think they could be a little more careful with it, that's all, but accidents do happen everywhere, even on Bonaire.

Thanks again, Mare, for a great idea! What did you think of the art show? Sounds like you saw it first hand. Inquiring minds want to know.

Mare, Thanks. Yesterday it appeared that the piece was intentionally placed by a couple of divers.

The rubble at Eden is one of my favorite spots to look for Bristle worms, brittle stars etc.. I also do not believe any fish would be harmed, by Mr. Ros' exhibit. Possibly their habits would temporarily be changed by the new objects, but that is all.

I can believe that some would find excitement in writing in the algae growing on the "canvasses". So sad, isn't it?

Annie, Great flickie, best one in quite a while.
LOL :-)

Kathy, I didn't even notice that that sign was tied to Willy! Just don't understand why someone would do that. So, it must have been done on purpose! Now, who is responsible and why? That sure must have been a lot of work to drag it down to 60' Glad to hear the rest of the exhibit is not harming the reef and since it is mostly shallow waters, even young divers can experience it as well, meaning junior certified kids. :-)
