one more day from TGIF.
Good morning everybody.

Have made some really nice coffee. Senseo for the dutch, Starbucks for all the others (specially for John).

Very busy, but all day at the office, so will check in every now and then.

Martine, my husband and I photographed the first half of the eclipse, then cloud cover ruined the rest. Did you?

I think I pulled something in my left arm doing leaves yesterday. I can't seem to lift my arm up without pain. I must be out of shape. I'll take a couple of Advil, please. Just peeking in, great shots so far. Will check back later.

Debbie, sorry to hear about the arm. We're waiting for all our leaves to fall before raking (that's what hubby wants ... figure I better let him have his way every once in a while:-)). I'm getting impatient, tho. I'm one of those wierd people that enjoy raking leaves. :-)

Woke me up at 5:45 and I thought we were being attacked (seriously)...then opened the drapes and the window and watched the show for about a half hour then it started to rain again...

I do have to agree with Annie, I like the old beach bar cam placement better...guess these folks are just chillin'

Oh, and Cynde, for what it's worth I'm with you and Annie on the Beach Bar cam. I liked the old location better mainly because it was easier for people to put up signs to read. Imagine how big your font would need to be to get your sign read now. :-)

I'm with you, too! Not only have there been NO signs since the move, but you can't see the people any more. We're left out of all the action! (Except when there's a BBQ, we can see the people lining up and filling their plates -- I'd rather see the Real Party) :-(

I agree about the location of the bar cam, but it was bad captures when the sun was setting behind the people, causing silhouettes At the previous location ... Maybe the new location needs a short pole or something to mark where to stand so people are close enough for us to read the signs and see the people well :-)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Michael Gaunt (Experienced BonaireTalker - Post #634) on Thursday, October 28, 2004 - 2:57 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

I don't recall the technical information about the camera nor do I have the time to go back into the archives to find it, but would it be silly to inquire as to whether the cams have a zoom capability on them. I seem to recall that they are fixed, but if there was any way to zoom in just a little bit that would make a huge difference.

Good point about the silhouettes and blinding sun in the afternoon/evening hours. Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea to move things.

...hmmmmmm, I started with my 2 cents worth and now I'm up to $1.25.

Now I have been giving this some thought, the bar cam is too far for close ups and if you hit zoom, the people are getty fuzzy all over. Background is nice, but its like you're looking in from afar. The bar is so dark, can't make out anyone, even at the table, it's hard to see. I know it was a lot of work to move the web cam, but we need to figure out how to make this location work better for viewers. I'm sure Jake is thinking this too, we need to read signs, Jake! See our friends up close and personal. Maybe you can put on a telopathic lense. Now, you know I am no camera knowledgable person, sounds like something superman would use, but its all I could come up with. :-)

Debbie,

I spoke to Henk from Bongos about this when I last saw him, and he likes the direction the camera is pointed in (he should - he picked the spot). We discussed perhaps moving the camera a bit further down on the pole - that might allow people to get a bit closer with signs. I still need to schedule some time out of my work day to go and give that a try - maybe next week when Stan Eker comes down (he indicated he was game for messing around with it, and I need at least one extra set of hands to help).

Jake

Ok, here's my last (I hope) new-camera-angle whine: there's just one brief time of day when you can really see folks (kinda the opposite of what we had with the sunset silhouettes -- you could see people in the morning, early afternoon and after sunset; now you can't see them except in the late afternoon/early evening). Okay. I'm done whining. But Jake, I will be there Nov 13-20 and we'll be willing to help if you need us.

T-minus 4 days, 19 hours, no planned hold. We're go for launch!

I think I have a solution to the glare, but we'll have to play a little to see if it'll help enough. The camera is super sensitive so it'll show IR at night, but that works against it in the daylight. The glare from the beach and water were killing the contrast range. A vertically polarized filter should help that a lot, without impacting the IR reception at night. It'll also bring back the color saturation in the day. Most days, it looked like a B&W camera under the bar.
Glare is still effecting the camera. Notice how you can't see anything under the bar when the sun is out, but suddenly you can see under the top when it gets cloudy, even more so under dense clouds? That's the range compression due to the glare (now off of the top of the bar and the sand between the bar and the cam. Big sigh. Isn't technology wonderful ;-) No guarantees, but I think we can help it a *lot* with a simple filter. I'm bringing enough that Jake can play around it later, if he has an itch. It might improve the other 2 beach cameras as well. We can do a test to see. I'd like to see it back on it's original mount myself, as I don't have any signs that are a meter tall!

I'll land Wednesday PM, probably won't have any time to do anything until afternoon Thursday, so stay tuned (same bat time, same bat channel).

Did anyone but me notice that the BarCam is now so high up that it's built-in IR illuminators aren't doing anything after dark? They're still on, but there's nothing in range to reflect off of.... and the lights in the patio area are really killing the images. It looks like they're reflecting off of imperfections in the front glass of the camera, causing the spots and streak.
