I read that it was now across from Warehouse. I asked someone and they said it was down the dirt road next to Cash & Carry, but I didn't see anything back there that looked like a recycling bin or drop off location. Anybody know to which building or lot I am supposed to take all these Bright bottles?

Glass recycling? I'd love to know where that is! Kills me to throw out things that I could have recycled at home.

the glass recycling is NEXT to the warehouse - west side --- in the Selibon yard where the garbage trucks park ... just to your right as you enter .. word of warning -- watch out for the trucks entering !!!!!!

I did a search for Selibon and found a website that has a lot of Sean Paton's videos and commentary about the management of waste and recycling on Bonaire. http://www.forumantilles.com/topics-environmentnature.html Other than that, and another thread on BT Environmental Action, there is little information available about the current status of recycling efforts. I've always heard that aluminum is the easiest material to recycle. Wouldn't it be cost effective to ship that off-island?

I realize that the small scale on Bonaire creates problems for recycling, but it is sad to see such a beautiful landscape used for landfill. And thinking just about economics, that land is or will be way too valuable to use that way.

Bonnie, why not take some of that recycling home? That's what I do--going back, my suitcases are pretty empty, so I smash my aluminum cans and bag them along with plastic bottles, cardboard, newspapers, etc. It is pretty light and I have never had a problem with Customs. When I get home I recycle everything from Bonaire, and it is a great feeling to be helping in some way.

fyi, I deposit the glass in the yellow glass recycling containers you can find next to restaurants and bars.

Pauline, my husband will laugh his head off, but you're right, I'll do it. Actually, I've thought of doing that. You set us a good example!

THanks, now I know where to take the bottles. Does seem odd that they don't collect cans too, actually worth some cash. But there has been a step backward on the yellow containers. Originally they were put out at lots of restaurants and bars to encourage recycling, and people were encouraged to drop their own bottles there. But I guess it was too successful. Recently Selibon started charging extra for the separate recycle bin, and lots of places backed out of the program. Kind of counter productive; they should charge more for not recycling. So now when you put your glass in their container it's actually an extra cost to the restaurant. I'd ask the owner first to make sure they have room for their own bottles, otherwise the containers are all going to go away. Kudos to the businesses that still have them.

The whole problem is a lot more complicated. The original plan to use the glass commercially in asphalt has changed and now it is just piled up at the land fill. Politics got involved and we are back to square one.
