After reading twenty-three screens on "thief being caught" which had little or nothing to DO with theft, I thought I'd add our experience, but in a fresh thread. We spent the month of January at Lighthouse Beach Resort last year. We kept the apartment locked while away and had no problems on the beach because we left nothing in the van and the windows open. HOWEVER, the night before we left, 2am, I heard sounds from downstairs. I came down, turned on all the lights and finding nothing, went back to bed. Our friends were leaving on an early flight and conveniently for them, and for potential thieves, had left their entire travel gear in the kitchen, ready for the trip to the airport. Well, in the morning, it became obvious what the sounds were: the kitchen window was broken, the screen cut and on the other side of the apartment the sliding doors had been damaged by an attempted entry. Very, very scary...six of us upstairs asleep! The police were reasonably competent, but our property management people were livid...and embarassed. They assumed the conscience of the beautiful island itself and were most upset that this should be tainting our experience. That wasn't the case, altho' we were obviously disappointed that an incident like this does occur. YOU CAN'T BE TOO CAREFUL. Now, this winter we're in our home in Florida. We have had a 'sometime' tenant here for five years and he had to scramble to find us a key when we came for our three months this winter. Hasn't had the house locked in all that time. Nor have we since we arrived. Go figure.

You hear of these stories. But when we went to Bonaire we had no problems at all. While there no one we met had probles either.

Cayman Island now we had problems there....Friends locked dive gear in the truck and when we came back the trunk was broken into and everything gone.

So it happens everywhere....

That's frightening stuff, Freda. I had that happen when I lived in my very first apartment which was not in the best section of town...they made off with the color TV right out the kitchen window. The only reason we were aware something was awry was because it got very cold in the rooms....they left the kitchen window open in the dead of winter after they ripped us off. They were speaking to my roommate who did not have her very strong lensed eyeglasses on...she thought it was my boyfriend talking to her and she went back to sleep. Very scary stuff. Glad they did not get anything during your attempt at the Lighthouse Beach Resort. Carole

I think this should be moved to "Local Items", maybe I can find one or two others which agree and gain the necessary "clout" for such a request

PS I took advantage of the effort to also move a few other threads out of Trip Reports to better homes.

No problem, poor Jake has a lot of problems with us..

So in English:

Did you ever do the Cave-dive in Baarlo?
And what about the drink, my place (Maasbree), or your place (Venlo)?

Harrie

Harrie

you seem like a nice guy with a sense of humor, so I will honor you with my last post on BT.

Of course I'm a yank(N.american), born in New Orleans, La. currently residing in Florida(but may indeed buy a place in Bonaire) I have only been to the Netherlands twice(I actually did spend some time in the Venlo area), but I would have to look at a map to locate Maasbree, so there is a cave there eh.

I have worked (consulted) for/to the Dutch(SSM a sub.of SHV) for many years, in which time I think I learned something of the culture and history of the Netherlands. I have a great respect for you folks as a group and find your language to be totally impossible.

So I would be honored to have a drink with you at some point in time, probably in Bonaire in my new home next to the Richters.

Enjoy Bonaire.

Dave Scott

If you want to know, Carole, you should ask me, because I'm the owner, but this discussion was part of some fake discussion between Vort (alias 1, alias2, alias 3, a.s.o.) and me. But he supposed he could come in with 5 zero's, and i told him that we were not in discussion about selling.

I know, Harrie, I was just speaking in jest, too. If I were living where you are right now I would not want to leave, either. Our dream is to live on Bonaire someday, but we will not be able to live in your neck of the woods unless we hit the big lottery first! LOL. Sorry if I upset you...I was only going with the flow of the thread. Peace. Ayo. Carole

Carole, you didn't upset me at all, so don't worry.

It is queiet on BT, do you also miss Vort?
Wish he would be back on BT, would make things more exciting....

Vort, where are you?

Harrie
