Pietri..I think it was a great move and am optimistic on anticipated positive changes for the island! An inflow of much needed cash, a better police force coming in & an upgrade of the infrastructure should all benefit the island and the citizens.

Additionally I suspect the revision of the tax policies if implemented as I've read should all be positive. IMHO Bonaire is "growing up" & has had it's share of growing pains over the last 20 years, but there have been many positive steps/developments & I view this one as pivotal. Lets see what develops.

I'm hoping that some of things that are impacting negatively on the reef will now be addressed more seriously and in a more timely manner than they have been in the past...

I'm breathing a big sigh of relief that nothing derailed integration. Grown-ups will finally be in charge. I look forward to Bonaire becoming the Dutch Riviera.

Is the official currency the US dollar as of 10/10/10? I understand the guilder can still be used but is today the official switch? I have a wager on this. Thank you

Hi Antoine, see this thread in 'Everything Else Bonaire'

http://www.oldbonairetalk.com/newsgroup/messages/27/437407.html?1286313406

the last post by Michael Gaynor is a letter from the M&C Bank

IMHO I'd say that the official date is 1st Jan 2011

let the Yays & Nays begin..... :):)

Well, i have mixed feelings quite honestly. I have been visiting Bonaire since 1986 and, well, lots of changes have taken place, some good, some not so good.

I guess one could say "plus de choses changent plus qu'ils restent la même chose"

And "I look forward to Bonaire becoming the Dutch Riviera."....not sure how I feel about that statement!

Thanks Ray. Yes, I had read that thread but I can't tell what the official dates actually are. I had thought 10-10-10 was the date for the switch but that both currencies could still be used during this transition period to eliminate the guilder.

The guilder continues to be the official currency until 1/1/2011, at which point the dollar will take over and all guilder monetary instruments will be automatically converted at the rate of 1.79. This rate will stay in place until the end of January, so that people have the opportunity to convert without other fees. After January, guilders will still be available for purchase if one is needing to use them in either Curaco or Dutch St. Martin, but then with the "purchase" exchange rate (currently 1.82) plus bank fees.

After January, guilders should not be accepted on Bonaire anymore.

Will children born in Bonaire be Dutch citizens after 10/10/10? If so, will there arise "citizenship tourism" by which, for example, full-term Venezuelan women will come to Bonaire only for long enough to give birth to a Dutch child? Dutch citizenship is one of the most valuable in the world, as is obvious from the fact that Dutch emigration to the United States is negligible.

I disagree with your reasoning non-"emigration" to the US. It is difficult for anyone to legally become a US citizen. There is a lottery of sorts specifically to allow a certain amount of people per year into the US. I have friends in Holland who are unable to move to the US due to this.

To a degree, it's easier to sneak into the US than to come in legally.

Nah. I'm fine with it. And meant no offense to you either, just in case you took it that way. You spoke the truth, I agreed in my own way.
