I don't understand why anyone needs or should want a second referendum. It has been suggested that local politicians might want to scuttle integration to preserve their jobs; but as I understand it, they will keep their jobs. So I don't know why anyone would fear integration. Am I missing something?

This isn't a complex issue, nor is it specific to Bonaire.

What the government of Bonaire would ideally like is an endless amount of money from the Netherlands and not to be questioned on how it is spent.

I currently live in Scotland and the same situation applies. Scotland wants independence from England and to be allowed to run its own affairs. However, to do this they would have to double taxes to be self supportive. As a result, they want money from England but they don't want the English government to interfere in how it is used.

Being in Government in places such as Bonaire is a sure fire way for the dishonest to make a lot of money very quickly. Whether it is from over inflated expense accounts, backhanders from developers or from the misappropriation of funds, many people become very wealthy.

The last thing that these islands want is for their benefactors to be sticking their noses in.

The point is, as understood, that it was not clear what they meant with "direct link with the Netherlands". Association or integration? The Chamber assumes.

"Kenmerk 2009-0000566335: The people of Bonaire in a referendum in 2004 the majority elected for a direct link with the Netherlands. Based on this choice and the subsequent administrative arrangements, the Netherlands, together the directors of the island area Bonaire in the process of shaping this new political future. The Government assumes that the concept of public entity within the Dutch polity ultimately not to be discussed and that the referendum in particular will focus on the development of that concept."

Watch the words: "The Government ASSUMES"
