Hi all missing Bonaire. My wife Cathy and I left early on the 12th. Continental. We made the mistake of forgetting to put our phone back in the package for Chat and Browse. We discovered the phone when we were inside of the waiting area at 5:30 AM. Erwin's son, introduced my wife to a nice young woman working at the Perfume Duty Free and paid her to return the phone to Chat and Browse.... Michael has not had the phone returned. If anyone out there, especially on Bonaire know this young woman, or knows the man who manages the Duty Free could you contact them and ask that the phone be returned. Michael is very upset. While on Bonaire Cathy's dad passed and we have the funeral today. Our heads have not been all there and hence we left the phone. any help is sure appreciated...

So Sorry for yours and Cathy's loss Bill!
Good luck with the phone. Maybe Erwin's son can help?

Bill I am not very upset but would like the phone back asap since it is no longer available here and belongs to UTS, not me. I lease them and need to account for them.

I'm kinda amazed that no one has access to the Duty Free people. I've written to the Tourist Board, everyone on here that often has a bunch to say... is stepping up... I feel like what Lenny Bruce said when you deal with the phone company... I feel like an idiot with two dixie cups and a string....

Hi Bill
I'll be in the airport tomorrow morning, for a day trip to Curacao. Usually, the shops are not open because duty-free is for international flights only, not local flights, but just in case: Do you remember the girl's name, or any other details that might be helpful? I live here, but have no idea who owns/runs the duty-free shops, because they're only inside the airport's departure hall. I'd guess they're run by companies in Curacao, not here, and staffed with only a few salespeople.

Also, very sorry for your loss.
Ruth

Ruth
Thank you very much. It was a young bonairian woman. Erwin's son, who is very nice, introduced her to my wife. The shop manager who is East Indian, said oh yes she is a very nice person and will return the phone. That's as much as Cathy got. We've been to Bonaire so many times and never had a problem, seemed like the right thing to do... Just ask at Duty Free Purfume if the manager can give you a name, that should help Michael...
Thank you for your kindness
Bill

No problem Bill...will do if they're open (but I don't think there are any international flights @ 8am Thursdays, unless KLM's really late...). I'll let you know either way when I get back tomorrow night.

I really appreciate it Ruth. I'm wondering if anyone can put me in touch with anyone in authority that could follow up on this. I can only assume at this point that the young woman has choosen to keep the phone. any help would be appreciated.

Michael, do you know who owns the shops now? It would be useful information. We will be out of town dealing with arrangements. I will work more on this Monday.

Hi Bill-sorry, all shops were closed this morning. Michael's going to wait to talk to Erwin's son when he returns, if the phone doesn't turn up in the meantime. I wouldn't assume the girl has kept it; I'd more quickly assume she has no idea of where Chat-n-Browse is, or simply doesn't have a way to get there, even if she said she'd do it (yes, even if she said she would...I've found "non-confrontational" to be a common Bonairean trait: it would've been easier to say "yes" than "no" when Erwin's son sort of put her on the spot...). Even if any of us knew who owned the shop, no one's there until there are international flights (like at 4am during the week; Saturday during the day).

Ruth, thank you very much. I really appreciate the long distance help. My wife is a very trusting soul and she never asked the young lady for her name. I'm sure Erwin's son will help... he's a nice guy and he knew the lady.... thanks again for trying...

Michael doing the best I can, it was an honest mistake because Cathy wanted you to have it right away... I would have sent it over night, but she said we couldn't count on the mail... if you have something we can do to help... let us know thanks

Hi Bill..Sorry to hear about your unfortunate problems. Not surprisingly I see several folks have made a good faith effort & have tried to help you out on this. It certainly appears that the phone is in fact MIA. Since you have posted this on a public board & you have indicated that it was your mistake in not properly returning the phone to Michael, I can only assume you are accepting responsibility and making good on the cost of the phone.

Bill and Kathy are good friends and a stupid missing phone is not going to change that. It will turn up or not.

Bill,
Please pass along our condolences to Cathy on the passing of her Dad. I am very sorry.

A shout out of thanks goes to the BON locals who offered their help to you in your time of need. I am not surprised by their extending of hands. I think it's safe to assume it's none of my, or anyone else's, business what arrangements Bill has made with regards to making good. My hope is that it will be returned to it's owner very soon.

Kobi and Vince, and Michael:
Thanks for the feedback. And yes we are accepting the responsibility. Cathy has put a check in the mail for the phone. And I surely appreciate the help that the good Bon locals have offered. It's frustrating that the Duty Free is open at such early hours. I'm sure that this could be easily taken care of if it was more accessible.... ah well, live and learn. Michael has been so helpful for us and we are just beside ourselves that we've put him in this position. I knew that the folks here on BT would be helpful, makes me miss the island even more.... hope to be back soon..
and by the way Cathy says thank you for all the kind words.... the difficult task of cleaning her dads home and closing that part of her life comes this weekend. Time is a funny thing
thanks to all
B

Bill..From my observations, many times in today's society a majority of people fail to take responsibility for their actions. That was the impetus for my posting. Seems to me, that a good number of folks always point the finger elsewhere & not back at themselves. Kudos to you and I'm glad to see that you are not one of them.
I sincerely hope your next visit to Bonaire will be more pleasant.

Well Vince, in the 38 yrs we've only had two with problems.. this is really the first of this kind.... I love Bonaire, I love the people there and the moment I touch the runway I feel at home... it's just experience... You live you learn .... in a week or two I will post some of my trip.... we saw some great things and changes that make us worry.... but this is 2009.. thanks to all

OK The Story: I just received a call from Norka, the fantastic lady who caters parties, cooks at your home, etc, etc. She knows the owner of the perfume store who was there when the phone was passed on to the unknown girl, who is now known but did not show up for work anymore and now works for Auto City...Deva, my assistant manager, knows the girl and called her...she was a bit contrite but will hopefully bring the phone to me before closing today! End of story..I hope.

Well, thanks to all who helped. Things change on Bonaire, but all in all, it's still a place I love and trust. You live and learn. For my part, I'm glad to be 61. I wouldn't be 20ish again if you paid me.... course if you offered me 40, I'd have to think long and hard about it... we all say if I knew then what I know now... I would have been dangerous.. thanks for the update Michael.... please via email so as not to continue this anymore than necessary... let us know exactly what we owe... good thing my wife still works and keeps me in the style I'm accustomed to...<smile> Thank you all

Rumor has it, he's in the construction of the South Mall here in Albany NY....the tower bldg. As could only happen in Albany, when the tower was near completion (btw, I used to work there and run the stairwell at lunch) anyway they interviewed a steel worker and asked him what he thought... he scratched his chin and said..."she ain't plumb"/// they had a real tough time with the elevators.... Oh Albany
