Bonaire – March 8 is a monumental day when Constantin “Patun” Sargoza and Elton “Taty” Frans windsurf from Bonaire to Curacao. The event is a fundraiser for Bonaire’s own Erwin Muller. Erwin, a dive master and former windsurf hero on Bonaire suffered a serious stroke in January. He is recuperating in Curacao and has a long rehabilitation ahead. Erwin is well known in the community for being a man who loves adventure whether it’s riding his quad or delivering a yacht across the Caribbean. Locals and tourists are rallying to support Erwin and his family, Ellen and Jason. The March 8 race is dedicated to Erwin, one of the original founders of windsurfing on Bonaire. Saragoza, a former Olympian will race across to Curacao with Pro Windsurfer Taty Frans. Taty, one of the top freestyler’s in the world recently circumnavigated the island in 2008. He is perhaps the fastest slalom sailor presently on Bonaire. The race commences at 9 AM outside BOPEC. Spectators are welcome for the send off. Helicopters and chase boats will accompany the two sailors across the passage. The record set back in the 80’s by Erwin is 4 hours. They will race to Light House Point on the East side of Curacao and then head down to the pier near Breezes Resort. Donations for this fundraiser may be contributed via Paypal to: Erwin2CanDive@gmail.com or by depositing into MCB # 400 050 800 c/o Linda Baker. You may also speak to Elvis Martinus about other contributions for the fundraiser at 786 2288.

For those wishing to accompany the flotilla it is important you speak with Elvis Martinus by calling 786 2288 for clearance. The safety of the two windsurfers is paramount. This is a very exciting yet intense voyage. We wish them well as they race for a fellow man of the sea, Erwin Muller.

To follow Erwin’s recovery please see http://erwinmuller.blogspot.com/

Thanks to Elvis, Patun, Taty, Ann and all the rest who are working hard to raise awareness and increase contributions to help Erwin! Elvis has shared a little more about Erwin's long love-affair with the sea and watersports (with my edits):
"Erwin sailed Bon.- Cur. in 4 hours in Nov of 1988.

Erwin did a lot in watersports; he was the first Bonairean windsurfer, the first who competed in Regatta, to windsurf around Bonaire, to windsurf from Curarao to Venezuela. In the windsurf world cup one announcer gave him the name "the beast".

He was good at water skiing and an excellent sailor-Sunfish,Beachcat,Yachts,Fishingboats...Parasailing, you name it. If Erwin saw something he had never done before, he would buy the equipment and teach himself how... like he had the first one wheeler,Qarts,Parashut behind car and boats; he was the first to Kayak offsore at night...

Erwin is a great seaman, many times he has sailed boats from the USA to Bonaire for people who have bought yachts."

For all of you sailors, seamen (and women), windsurfers, fisher-folk,and others (in addition to divers) who share Erwin's passion for the sea, please consider making a small donation to help them cover their expenses, which range from plane fare to covering Jason's lost catch on days away from fishing when he visits Erwin. While divemaster's do have a fixed salary, much income is generated through the tips an individual gets for extraordianry service to clients. These are the gaps your donations will help to fill in the short term.

All of the donations collected are going directly to the Muller family. Thanks in advance for your generosity!

I met with Elvis today. The winds are odd, very NE vs a better SE. This will make for a very challenging race to CUR. The chop and wind are ok for Taty and Patun but not the wind direction. Patun has decided not to sail. Taty goes on his own. Please meet at 8 AM at BOPEC for the send off. Patrice from Bistro will be on hand with breakfast goodies. Donate ANYTHING..5-10 NAF is appreciated.

we were at bopec about 845AM. only taty windsurfed so it was a race against the clock, not another windsurfer. he began, to great applause and horn-honking, almost exactly at 9AM (the time elvis told me last night). there were at least 50-75 people there (maybe more, they were pretty spread out) to see him off. after he left we drove back to karpata to wait for some friends and then dove with them at candyland so i didn't hear how taty did.

Here's the result(compliments of Ellen)!!!

tatyerwinCUR

The photo shows Prime Minister Emily de Jongh-Elhage and Taty Frans with Erwin Muller just after Taty completed his sail from Bonaire to Curacao in 2 hours and 15 minutes. Taty broke Erwin's record of 4 hours that stood for 20 years! There was a very nice tribute to Erwin and a great day was had by all. It was wonderful to see Erwin surrounded by so many friends and supporters. Thanks to everyone who organized and participated in this event and congratulations to Taty!

Congratulations, Taty! You rocked the record!!!

I'm donating a $1 for every minute the record was broken by: to the Mullers and also to the Bonaire Kids sailing program. For those that are challenged by higher math, that's 105 minutes!

BONkids

Here's a foto of Erwin May 12, 2002, at the dedication of the club building!

I challenge those of you with the means to do the same, at whatever rate makes sense to you (10 cents/minute, $1/min, $10/min, whatever!)

Annie, Thanks for getting the pictures from the event!

The record was broken by 105 minutes! (In addition to Taty's skills as a sailor, I imagine equipment improvements might have a little something to do with the additional speed)

Anyone wanting to make contributions can do so for the Mullers via the contacts posted at the beginning of this thread.

Anyone wanting to donate also to the Bonaire Kids windsurfing program should direct those funds thru Elvis at Bonaire Windsurf Place. It is a good program that builds skills, discipline and confidence and can always use donations for upkeep and equipment repair.
