I am a social scientist and hope to study culture change across time on Bonaire. I'm interested in meeting non-Dutch, non-American residents to talk with them about Bonaire's change in status with respect to the Netherlands. I'd appreciate any suggestions that you might have about key people to meet. My fluency in Papiamentu is minimal, but I'm working on it!
Thanks.

Sandra,

I might suggest looking back at the archived issues of "The Bonaire Reporter" in the section "On the Island Since..." That will give you lots of connections for people who have come to Bonaire from other places.

Are you looking for long time residents owning businesses, or just residing and working, or just residing.....?

Best of luck and keep us posted on your work!!

Dara

Carl: Thanks for the information about the online translator. I suspect that it will be very useful.
Dara: I like your idea of using the Bonaire Reporter for identifying people. I am especially interested, however, in people whose families have lived on Bonaire for generations.

Ah, well, that's an entirely different proposition :-)

A better resource for that would be someone like Emma Sint Jago in Rincon - I know her from her work with the Fundashon pa Arte i Kultura di Bonairu and her annual organization of Dia di Arte. emmasintjago@yahoo.com I think you could catch her at Rose Inn Rincon, as well.

The numbers I have are a few years old, but may still be accurate: 717-6420 or +599-786-6420.

I would also place an add in the local paper (Extra) in Papiamentu explaining what you are looking for.

contact boi antoin at the Extra newspaper .. he is bonaire's historian and writes the daily feature "Hende di Boneiru" as well as doing the weekly television program "Herensia" which are interviews with the bonairian elders. his e-mail address is b.antoin@telebonet.an. he speaks excellent english and can help you with papiamentu translations as our elders as a rule do not speak english.

Ha, Ha!! Thank you Pietri!! I was trying and trying to remember his name last night, searching in all of the nooks and crannies of my grey matter and the only thing I could come up with was "Doi"....and Googling bonaire+Doi got me nowhere, LOL.

Boi Antoin, he's the ticket!

There was a gal that posted a few months ago, she and her family are native Bonairians, she had a web page about her family, who is from Rincon. I searched the archives, but can't find the thread with the link. Does anyone else remember?

Tink
I think this may be the link you are talking about.
http://www.rinconero.f-sw.com/index.html
The writer of the website does not give her mothers last name, but there is an email address. Her mother lives in Rincon.
