What a difference! They welcomed him and told him how glad they were to have him there and that they would do everything they could to "get him back on his feet again"....he is sharing a very large room with 6 other patients and Ellen said already she can see the difference that it will make to have people in the same situation as Erwin, able to give him encouragement and advice on how to help himself.

Ellen said they serve a good lunch at this facility, but only "bread" meals for breakfast and dinner...and Erwin doesn't eat bread & cheese or bread and meat, so she's concerned about that a little. I suggested she stock up on Ensure until she can figure out a solution to the food dilemma.

And then she also discovered a cut on his left ankle that appears to have become infected while he was in the hospital. They cleaned it, and she's hoping that they address that tomorrow because it is swollen and red. Hopefully they will give him antibiotics so that doesn't become more of an issue. The good news is that the staff are more aware and will be trying to prevent and look for injuries on the paralyzed limbs that don't have any feeling.

The down side of the move is that visiting hours are limited during the week days. Weekends, however, the hours are extended. So Ellen will probably travel back and forth between CUR and BON on a weekly basis for a while.

Jason was there today when I talked with Ellen, but will have to get back to BON soon.

Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers - they have a long road ahead.

Dara, thanks for the update. Is Erwin still on Bon? or is the rehab center in cur? Also, can you please repost the link for donations? Thanks for keeping us up to date...

Erwin is in the Rehabilitation Center on Curacao. Please feel free to send cards and messages of encouragement as follows:

Erwin Muller
C/O Mont Senior Verriet
Sals Bach Weg. #20
Santa Maria
Curacao, Netherlands Antilles
Dutch Caribbean.

Ellen and Jason will continue to fly back and forth to CUR so they can be with Erwin on the weekends when visitation hours are open/extended. She's not sure what sort of arrangements she'll be making for a place to stay and transportation while she's there...a problem for another day!

Donations may still be made via PayPal using the email address: Erwin2CanDive@gmail.com or locally on BON at MCB, account 400 050 800, in Linda Baker's name. Ellen will receive the ATM card for the US account this weekend when she is home and that will eliminate the need for wire transfers (yeah!)

Thanks again to all of you who have been so generous in this debilitating economy. All of your messages are there waiting for Ellen to read after she's had a chance to catch her breath.

wouldn't he get better treatment in bonaire for the rehab? i know there are several people who do rehab or at least i thought there was? it would save them so much money. plus friends could visit and that would be so much nicer. might even help more being home.

Elaine,

As far as I understand, this clinic is for stroke patients and has both OT and PT. While there is PT on BON, Erwin would have to stay at home, requiring Ellen to find help to care for Erwin (lifting him into a wheel chair would not be something Ellen could do by herself) and transportation. So, while it might seem that bringing Erwin back to BON is a good idea, Ellen really feels his chances for improvement are much better at the center in CUR. In BON he would get no OT, which focuses on cognitive skills and life skills.

While not convenient, it really seems the best choice for Erwin to stay in CUR.

Dara
