I am interested in conducting research on cultural change in Bonaire as the relation between Bonaire and the Netherlands changes. My training is in social science, and I hope to conduct interviews with members of the various constituencies that will be affected by the social change.

I’d appreciate your help in identifying (1) good sources (people or text) on recent Bonaire history, politics, economics, and education, and (2) the various types of residents that might be affected by change. With respect to the second item, I’d like your view on the major groups (ethnic, social, national) on Bonaire, so that I can interview several members from each group (feel free to volunteer yourself as a representative of one of these groups). A related question is how residents self-identify: Do they consider themselves Bonaireans? Antilleans?

I will be on island March and April, then again in June and July, so I’m working on getting this type of background information before I arrive. Any suggestions that you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

You will need to meet Pappi Cicilia, Frans Boi, Boi Antoin, perhaps the new LT. Governor, etc. Another person you should meet is Christie Dovale, born of American parents but raised in the Antilles. One very good contact would also be Orphalene Saleh, Maduro Bank Branch Manager. Don't expect too much via email since they probably would like to meet you before talking alot about themselves. If Sue Felix is willing to give you some time, she is another very good source.
