I am in the process of purchasing a home on Bonaire. I will be renting it some of the year and using it myself at other times. After looking around the island I am not sure where one can buy some basic furniture needs. It would be very expensive to ship from the states. Can things be order by cataloge as we do at home? How about shipping from the other islands?

Lenor-
When I bought my home, 7-7 had a good furniture dept. which they no longer have. It's sort of slim pickings on BON now. I would strongly suggest you furniture shop on Curacao where there are alot of options and price ranges, and the stores are all familiar with shipping to Bonaire. This will cost you FAR less money than shipping furniture from the US. The freight, cargo, and duty will absolutely kill you. Unless you already have a basement full of (used) furniture ready to go, I wouldn't go out and buy new stuff in the States. As far as names of furniture stores in Curacao, I can't remember! Maybe some other BTer can help. Or, any cab driver in Curacao will know all the good ones. Good luck!

Lenore
When we where there in May I noticed for the first time a furniture store on Kaya Internashonal, near Lisa gas station. I don,t know if it,s new or has been there for years since I was never looking for furniture. Maybe Michael can give us some info.
Enjoy your new home Mickey

Lenore, it's Muebleria Antilliana (Antilles Furniture) and they sell furniture, and small and large household appliances. Not a large selection but a bit of most everything.

Lenor,

Congrats! We too just purchased a townhouse last year in Bonaire. We also rent it out when we are not there. We did not want to spend a lot of money for that reason, but wanted to provide our guests with nice things. This is what we did.

We scoured our area for garage sales and flea markets. We found some nice furniture that would suit our townhouse. We also found a microwave, tables, etc. Anyway we sent quite a bit down via shipping to Bonaire and it wasn't that bad. We used Rocargo out of Bonaire. Their US contacts are Amcar Freight. We basically furnished our whole house including freight for about $4,000.00. The freight from NJ (they pick up via truck then it is shipped to Miami where it gets on a ship and goes to Bonaire. I have a contact / friend who recieved it and they shipped it via truck to our home from the docks.
When we were down there we did need to get a couple of things. We found a place, I cannot remember the name but it is a large blue warehouse right by Lisa Gas (I think). As far as furniture goes, it is hit and miss. It is also a bit expensive. The things I sent down would have cost much more in Bonaire than what I paid here in the states. The furniture stores in Bonaire are not like the ones in the states. It's almost like, what ever comes in the container is what is available. There is also a place downtown across from the Bonaire Visitor's center that had some pretty good prices. Boxes (as they are called) and mattress are a good price in Bonaire too. I am sure that my friend would be willing to help you out.
Basically, I found that freighting down some good used items from flea markets, garage sales and discount stores, including the freight was not only worth the price, but the aggrevation. I don't think I would have found all that I wanted in the time that I was there (3 wks)when we went down to set up our house.

As far as linens, etc. go, Domestications a bed/ bath and some kitchen items will ship directly to Bonaire, at VERY reasonable shipping prices. The only thing is that it can take up to 6 weeks for the items to arrive.

If you want to see how we furnished our place, you can see our website at www.scubabonaire.homestead.com/townhouse.html

If there is anything else I can help you with please feel free to contact me. I know how difficult it can be, no reason for someone else to go through what we had to! Good Luck!

Liz

Yes, Annie, that's true! But real hit and miss. Timing is everything. I was soooo bummed to realize I'd just missed Harbour Village's massive remodeling "porch sale" (as they call them down there) last year by one week.
