Hello Local BT'ers:

My family is taking our first trip (10 days) to Bonaire in late November. Have been wanting to come for years due to hearing such great things about the island, people and peaceful atmosphere. We like off the beaten path.

So... I just discovered that there are LARGE cruise ships from Princess and Cunard that will be in port (3 times) while we are in Bonaire :-(

We are planning on diving several days, chartering a sailing boat for a day and touring Washington Park for a least one day etc. I was wondering how crowed the island gets etc.

I was thinking we should dive and sail on the days the ships are in port. What say you???

Also, can anyone recommend a sailboat to charter for a day? The only one seem to be trip for 25, we are 4.

Looking forward to a great time in Bonaire!!

Thanks,

Michael
Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Michael, welcome to Bonaire Talk. The biggest thing you will see is downtown, and the snorkelers at windsock. We just make sure we avoid downtown (shopping), but the restaurants are fine as most of the pod folks don't eat while they are there.

Can't help you with the boat information.

check the times the cruise ships are in port - generally in the afternoon and not for a full day. The tour route for the touring companies has been changed to the north only. Except for some taxi's and auxiliary drivers cars, the south end will be virtually unaffected. Almost all the ships depart by 5 PM... often much earlier. The tours do go to the entrance at Washington Park so a cruise ship day would not be good with all the traffic on the north roads . but no tours go into the park.

Here's the cruise ship schedule. Like the others have said the podders only go certain places and are gone by 5:00. He11, I've stayed at Eden Beach when two of the big pods were in port. They were not that big a hassle.

As far as a schedule of arrivals and departure times there probably is one but I would not believe it. The cruise lines change their schedules daily depending on the conditions.

And I've just updated the cruise ship listing on http://www.infobonaire.com/cruises.html as of this morning with the latest schedule of ships for the remaining time of 2008, plus 2009 and 2010 (what is known to date). Susan

OMG, the list and passenger size just keeps getting longer and larger....not my cup of tea.

Joe and I will get to "experience" a lot of the "big boys" during Christmas week....oh well. We won't be at the Divi so it shouldn't be too bad for us.

Should be interesting to see QM 2 in port with yet another huge ship at the same time. My camera will be whizzing away, for sure!

I really don't care for this type of tourism but the officials on Bonaire are dead set on having it t his way. I only hope they will be closely monitoring the impact these ships might have on the island and in the waters. cb

I am just wondering what sort of touristy things come out when the cruise ships come into town? Is there anything worth checking out?

I don't think The world will be an issue. From Wikpedia

The World flies a Bahamas flag and has a gross tonnage of 43,524 tons. The vessel is 644 feet long, 98 feet wide, and has a 22 foot draft, 12 decks, and a maximum speed of 18.5 knots. The crew numbers 250.

The ship has 165 residential units (106 apartments, 19 studio apartments, and 40 studios), all owned by the ship's residents. The ship carries between 100 and 300 residents and their guests.

there is a fair in the the Wilhelmina Park featuring local arts and crafts ,booths by the animal shelter, donkey sanctuary and other charities , great local food and much more. This is a true local happening and worth a visit. Open while the ship(s) are in port.

Gotta say I'm very glad we go to Bonaire in the "off season". Can't imagine the island traffic when a cruise ship is in port. We sure liked it in July when it was super quiet everywhere. :D

Why is the Freewinds still on the Cruise schedule if in fact they have been "banned" from the island???
