A young Dutch women of 24 is missing since Friday.
The Amigoe writes it looks like a kidnapping. Somebody saw how she was pulled of her bike on to a motorbike
http://www.amigoe.com/artman/publish/artikel_47133.php

The radio stations are calling for help and infomation very frequently.

A plane and a boat of the Dutch Navy are searching since yesterday.

Well, my Dutch lessons seem to be paying off. Rough translation of the article:

Police have started a big search for 24-year-old Marlies Elizabeth van der Kouwe. She was pulled from her bike at 2:30 AM Saturday night/Sunday morning by a man who took her away on a dark colored motorcycle

The man was wearing dark clothes and was between 170cm and 180cm tall. This happened on Kaya Gobernador Debrot by the WEB installation. He disappeared to the east.

Police Chief John Schagen said this in a Monday evening press conference with Governor Herbert Domacasse and Justice officer David van Delft.

The search is being assisted by the Netherlands Antilles Coast Guard, who are providing aircraft to assist in the search. The plane flew search missions Monday evening and Tuesday morning.

Schagen has enlisted the help of the Netherlands Antilles RST (not sure ... I think that's a search and rescue team). "The team will search the whole day through", he said.

Van der Kouwe was born in Curacao in 1984. She is 5'4", blonde, with blue eyes. Her parents were informed yesterday evening (Netherlands time).

Anyone that saw anything should call 717-8555 or 911.

Thoughts for her family. I'm with Jim, just sickening. I am surprised there hasn't been more of a response here about this. I did a search for her name, and there are a lot of fora that are discussing the case/issue. If it were an American girl would more BTers respond?

By some articles translated they say she was at Karel's till it closed, then headed home. It says she was a "trainee" on Bonaire, so she was working somewhere, not a visitor. This is very frightening for all of us as nothing like this has ever happened on Bonaire. When we tell posters it's safe for a teen or woman, maybe not so anymore?

those on island, please keep us posted. I truly hope they find her...it's such a small island surely someone knows something....sad...tragic...

Some information, just heard on local radio-station.
Up to yet nothing found or heard of the woman. The scooter she was kidnapped on, as well as her flip-flops were found.
In the press is stated she was a trainee in the local Botika (Pharmacy), the owner of the Botika said she was a Pharmacy-assistant with certificates and had a job there.
She was born on Curacao, and has lived there as well as in the Netherlands. She was on Bonaire for about one month. Her father was a general practitioner on Bonaire, many years ago.
It happened near the office of Curoil, opposite of the WEB-plant (Hato), around 2 am in the night of Saturday on Sunday. The guards on the WEB-plant heard screams, but couldn't go for help, because the gate was closed, they saw one person, with a black coat, long sleeves, they shouted at him, and he drove away with the woman on a scooter. The scooter was found and appeared to be stolen.
Now a very bad part of the story, the guards called the police, and they are supposed to have answered that there was no occupation enough on the police-station at that very moment. They arrived on site hours later. The scooter and slippers were found and taken with them; and the missing of the woman was just related to the report of the WEB-guards and the scooter and shoes one-and-a-half day later, on monday-morning, when friends were missing her, and she didn't appear in the Botika. To be honest, this is one of the stories on radio, I cannot state how true the story is. Police is busy analysing what has really happened that night with regard to the police-reaction and the days after. As I have some experience with police-reactions, I wouldn't be surprised. I heard the command on this operation has been taken over by the Dutch.
Lots of speculations too, also about an ex-boyfriend, who lives in the Netherlands. Police got help of 10's of detectives (numbers change from hour to hour) from the Netherlands and Curacao. Planes with ultra-sensitive iR-equipment are flying over the island, the coast-guard sails around the island, the chopper that is here for transport of injured people to Curacao could also be used, but has a malfunction. Other choppers (probably from Dutch Coast-Guard) are called for.
They also do massive search on the island, and supposedly house-to-house searches too.
There are not much people living on Bonaire, but it is a relatively big island with lots of uninhabited and inaccessible parts.
The parents arrived on Bonaire, yesterday or so.

Terrible story, bad for the island, I hope she will be found alive, but the chances to find her are alive getting smaller every hour......

Harrie

I hope they find her ok.

I'm having a hard time understanding how you can be taken away on a scooter? If you're in the back...just get off. If you're in the front turn the key off... force a crash... too many ways to do something.

Martin,
I think the details in my report were not in contradiction with the article. And again an investigation necessary is so sad, And I didn't make any conclusion at all. I repeat: "To be honest, this is one of the stories on radio, I cannot state how true the story is."

BTW, While the dutch version speaks about one-and-a-half day delay, the American version speaks about half-a-day. Things in US always go faster...... (meant as a joke)

And for all the private-investigators under us: yes everybody is wondering how he transported the girl on a scooter, even over a sandy road, (tyre=-prints were found). From the statements of the WEB-guards it could be she was unconscious.

We join our prayers for Marlies to be found as soon as possible. Certainly, all those living on the island, as well as Bonerians living far away (but still connected emotionally to Bonaire), are holding our collective breaths and wishing for a positive outcome.

As was the case with Natalee Holloway in Aruba, it doesn't matter that the person responsible for her disappearance turns out to be a foreigner or not, there will be fingers pointed to what went wrong and not what went right.
I just think that the people of Bonaire deserve better than that, and I hope that everybody will keep this in mind as the search goes on.

Please pray for Marlies and her parents as well as for those participating in the search.

The latest news is that they've captured a man, who might be responsible for this. At the moment they're searching the Tera Cora bario, in cars and everything....
Also yesterday an 8 year old girl was kidnapped, luckily she could escape herself and that guy is arrested as well....

The 8 year old was alone on the street at 11pm .... the details of that case could end up as something of a family story.

The police chef (still quite new on Bonaire) gave a press conference, it is in the Amigoe.
Looks like the web security staff informed the police about a screming woman taken away by a guy on a scooter, a police car came some time later ... and they did nothing , did not even inform the police corps about it till Monday morning. The police chef was only informed late Monday morning when the lady was reported missing.
The chef of police promised an investigation.

Amigoe English
Marlies van der Kouwe still missing
24 Sep, 2008, 10:15 (GMT -04:00)

KRALENDIJK – “We are doing everything possible to find her and solve the case. We are working very hard on this case. There are 50 people on this case”, says Chief of Police John Schagen about the kidnapping of the 24-year old apprentice Marlies van der Kouwe, who was abducted in the Hato area near the WEB-installations in the night of Saturday to Sunday.

The investigation continues on Tuesday. The coastguard continues the investigation with boats and an airplane. Many police officers were put in the search action. Search groups were formed and search areas were closed off in northern direction where the kidnapper disappeared. It is a large area towards Rincon. Also the RST detectives, technical detectives and specialists of the KLPD, the Dutch Forensic Institute (NFI), and experts of other islands were asked for assistance. Schagen remains optimistic that Marlies is still alive.

People can call the tip-line 717-7251 anonymously with information on the disappearance of Marlies van Kouwen. “We are working on this case with a Team Large-Scale Investigation (TGO) which works with fixed procedures and software and in certain level of thinking and handling. We are interrogating witnesses and we are investigating each tip we receive."

Marlies is known among friends as a quite and calm girl. She was born in Curaçao in 1984 when her parents lived in Bonaire. Her father, Jan-Willem van der Kouwe, was a governmentc physician in the doctors’ clinic of Nort´i Saliña from 1983 till 1986. On the 30th of August Marlies arrived on Bonaire. After a week's holiday, she started working as a pharmacist's assistant at Botica Bonaire at the Kaya Grandi. The first days after her arrival she moved into an apartment in Kralendijk in the vicinty of Kaya Hulanda. Friend of family Van der Kouwe then found a better apartment with airconditioning for her. This apartment is situated in Hato where she cycles to on the night of Saturday to Sunday. She was abducted when she was almost home. Last week she had written herself in at the registry office. Marlies worked on Saturday until two o'clock in the afternoon. On Sunday she was off and on Monday she had to start at twelve o'clock. On that Saturday evening she went out to Karels Beach Bar with friends. According to De Telegraaf, she hadn’t consumed alcohol that night. Her father would have already arrived on the island. More media in the Netherlands are reporting the disappearance case.

Our thoughts and hearts are with the family.

Also, please, only post information that can be backed up by something. We do not want hearsay or speculation to become rampant. (Yes, myself included.)

My prayers to this lovely young woman and her family. Out of respect for her and the safety of this investigation I concur with your last statement Cynde:

"Also, please, only post information that can be backed up by something. We do not want hearsay or speculation to become rampant."

That to me only includes police statements since this is a crime. This is the policy of BT.

In the e-mail newspaper of Radio Nederland (in Dutch) they say that one man was captured. He lives in Kralendijk , works at the Plaza since his release from prison a few months ago , where he was for 8 years for sexual assault.
The police searched 2 houses in Terra Cora

There are many, many people on BT, that have warm feelings for Bonaire. If something terrible happens on the island, they want to get as much information as possible.
As usual in cases, when investigation is still on the way, police is not very generous in giving the information. That is here, in Europa and in USA also. I think traditionally the police on Bonaire is even more restrained.
Meanwhile, there is lot of information available, on the island, from local newspapers, from local radio-stations, from local TV-station and also from real "hearsay". I wanted to pass this information by to the readers of BT, to satisfy the curiosity of the BT'ers. I was clear in telling that it came from radio, so no police-statements.

quote: << Also, please, only post information that can be backed up by something. We do not want hearsay or speculation to become rampant."
That to me only includes police statements since this is a crime. This is the policy of BT. >>

This means it is not allowed to post any information on BT, while there is a lot of information available, for those curious on what has happened on "Dushi-Bonairu".

I have had this discussion before with the BT-moderators, who kicked me off impolitely, in the middle of the discussion. I received a lot of reactions through private-mail after that.

I think providing "hearsay"-information on this board should be acceptable, if you clearly say it is hearsay or still under investigation. As I did. I also think that the average BT-user is intelligent enough to see the value of the provided information.

This is indeed a crime, and it is terrible what happened, terrible for the young woman and her family, but also terrible for the island and the people on the island.
I think the police is doing a real good job in this case, you see a lot of activity, and I hope they can solve the case soon, and Marlies will come out alive.......

Something else is the part about the late reaction of the police in this case. The new chief promised an investigation on that part. We all know that these investigations mostly are done to cover eventually made mistakes. I hope mr. Schagen does a better job in this case(he is new here). As we also know the police-department has a bad reputation upon the reaction on cases. I reported here before about that (the dogs that bit my wife, half-a-year ago). I filed a complaint, I needed to pass so many doors to get it filed and there was absolutely nothing visible done with the complaint. (I didn't hear anything, didn't even get a reaction). Perhaps one thing happened: when I had a "panic"-alarm in my alarm system, some weeks later, the security-company showed up, but the police (as they were supposed and agreed to do) never showed up. Investigation why not, didn't give any clear reason. That is your fate, if you make a complaint to the police-force. This is also one of the reasons local people don't want to file a complaint, family-reasons, or it works against you. May I say this frightens me?
There are oh so many things happening on the island (yes, hear-say) that need to be investigated. Again there is the horrible story (on radio again yesterday) of groups of teenagers that rape fellow-students on school). This happened already several times and we know the culprits are still walking around, and will do it again another time. YES, HEARSAY, but so much information on this point, it must be true. Parents don't go for a file at the police-station, for divers reasons.
Nothing is done, everybody knows it happens. Terrible.
And believe me, lots of more things happening here that are covered under a cover of "don't let tourists know what is going on here".
Why is it not allowed to post on these things on this board, to try to get the opinion on these things happening on "3rd World"-Bonaire in a broader perspective?

Again I think it is necessary to think about the BT-policy on these points. These things are of major importance for Bonaire, now, and in the future, when these youngsters grow up to criminals, because nothing happens when you do a thing that is forbidden by law?

BTW, Moderators, thank you for leaving my posts above alive.....

Harrie

Sorry for the bad trranslation, but it gives at least an idea what is in the dutch version.

This means that Marlies was kidnapped to get half-a-million ransom from the father of another young woman (17 yr old), that works at Karel's Beachbar.
That person has nearly the same name as Marlies, and her father is supposed to be a convicted drugsdealer.
The kidnapped 8 yr old is also a daughter of this father, but this girl escaped.

Wow! heavy

See what comes out.....

Harrie, I do not agree that a board like BT is the correct podium to discuss hearsay issues and I think the BT policy is correct on this. The majority of posters on BT are NOT Bonaire residents but are VERY passionate about our beautiful island. This is a great thing in many many ways but when it comes to crime issues and sometimes other issues that are not tourism related but close to peoples hearts the discussions tend to go out of hand. This has happened a lot in the past. Passionate people on a sensitive subject with a lack of first hand information is a sure recipe for 'disaster discussions' IMHO.

BT is being used a lot by new Bonaire visitors for information and is a great source....in my view the best. To distort the valuable information with hefty discussions on crime and personal issues in my opinion takes away from the value and beauty of BT.

Just my two cents.

Harrie, thanks. I think you, and Ann misunderstood my statement. Posts of news articles, or information that was publicised on Bonaire radio are not "hearsay" in my opinion, it is information that Bonaire lovers are looking for.

What I meant by hearsay is that "i heard that, blah blah blah" without a news article, or source/reference.

And yes, if it is a post about a crime that happened to someone, i.e., robbery, theft, etc., a police report needs to be submitted. That is why Ann's post was removed.

In the case of this, no police report is necessary, it's all over the news, this is an entirely different case IMHO.

And, both Harrie and Bas are correct, in that the Bonaire lovers do want information when something like this happens, as it is so rare.

Anyway, thoughts go to this girls family, and I do hope they resolve this quickly and the woman is returned.

Well I also agree with both Bas & Jerry on this one.

I (and I suspect no one else reading this) have no idea what really happened here. To speculate & read between the lines I don't think is helpful and may be damaging to Bonaire's reputation as a whole. I believe the reason this board was founded and created was to provide useful information to the current and prospective visitors of Bonaire.

To address & speculate on such a highly emotionally charged issue like this (especially without the concluding/final results from the investigative force on Bonaire) serves no useful purpose. I say let the police first do their jobs.

What I hope that is being done is more than what a traditional search and rescue (SAR) team would do, which would be to start searching all over with cadaver dogs.

What is needed is a couple of specialized K9 teams who regularly work cases such as this (abductions, murders, etc.), and to work 'live scent' from where Ms. van der Kouwe was last seen, and have the dogs trail her from there. Being on a bicycle would be of no difficulty, nor if she were transferred onto a motorized cycle. Any other 'sightings' or places-of-interest can also be checked with these scent specific dogs to rule out whether or not Ms. van der Kouwe has been there.

If there is a person of interest, their scent too, can be taken to her last known area to see if the dogs will take THAT scent. There are a lot of different scenarios that can be worked, including working the dogs in cadaver, as well as searching for articles and evidence relevant to this case.

If you recall the NH scenario in Aruba, news and info changed daily and sometimes hourly. This is the case with the Bonaire situation. People are translating Dutch news reports or Amigo news and there is a lot of truth and here say. There are daily press releases from the police so maybe that would be best posted if it is public. So far today, from locals on island and ex pats, there are 10 stories floating around. I will believe something when I hear an official police bulletin. It seems now a unified effort is in place with several police authorities. Julia, you may want to post your URL so folks know who you represent please.

While I definitely feel that two experienced members of our unit who could help on this case as this is what we do, posting on here was more of "I hope that resources of this type are used" versus bringing in straight SAR teams if indeed this turns out to be more of a case like NH's case was. I am stating only my own personal feelings.

Nonetheless, our URL is: www.vk9sar.org

Indeed, the police-chief was extremely clear in this, no ransom, although he had only spoken to the mother of the 8 y old, not the father, but he was still very sure of this.
The 8 y old is safe and sound.
In that case a suspect was taken in custody, and is examined in this very moment. He will stay in custody for at least 10 days.
It was not exactly clear, but it appeared he had made a partial confession. The police-chief didn't want to say if person taken in custody had been convicted before.
He stated also clearly that the two cases have nothing to do with each other.

In the case of Marlies v.d. Kouwe, he said nothing that she was found. Several house-searchings were done, several things were taken in security, didn't want to tell what it was, and what was found on those things.
Special dogs from Curacao arrived yesterday, did field=search with those dogs whole day, (I have seen it actually here, near us in Hato) Searches will go on tomorrow.
50 to 60 people are working exclusively on these two cases.

Not more to tell, poor Marlies.........

Please, please, please, Bonaire Talk supporters and Bonaire residents do not post information that is unsubstantiated. Rumor and innuendo can be devastating to our island. Even if the police are only providing limited information about the investigation at least that information is based in fact, not rumor or speculation. Whether the police have done a proper job or not is a separate issue. Please do not post information unless it is based in fact and not second or third hand information. Let us not let this issue get out of hand. Truth is alway less interesting than rumor.

A message of thanks to Ruth van Tilburg for the link. It didn't quite work for me, but I did follow your advice to google it, and found this link:

http://www.vozdibonaire.com

it seems like a "live" broadcast, and I was shocked by what I heard. :-(
I have to say...it sounded more like somebody from Curacao then from Bonaire, but the discussion was not at all about Marlies.
I'll continue to listen to see if she mentions anything about Marlies or the search.

I also found the other radio station mentioned by Ruth, which is:

http://www.bonfm.com/index.html

Thanks so very much Ruth, you've provided me with information that not even my family in Bonaire e-v-e-r sent me. SO, masha danki y un abrazo.

As for Jim and Jane...
Thanks for writing your message. I was probably one of the many that got all emotional and happy that Marlies was (supposedly) found. It is not easy to follow the events all the way from Canada, as much as I would like to. What happened in Aruba with Natalee, was covered by the American press very closely, and of course Toronto is so close to the U.S. border that we got the information instantaneously. Not exactly with this tragedy unfolding in Bonaire.

I also want to emphasize that it is important for those posting here, to understand the absolute necessity to stick to the truth, because there are some of us that are only able to get information from this particular site (at this time). Please be considerate to this fact.
And a personal "thanks" to all that are helping with providing information.

My 5 cents, (Eurocents of course)

If Daniella in her first post would have written:

=====I heard from friends that Marlies is found, and she is currently for a check-up with the doctor. As soon as I know more I will inform you. I have got no official confirmation yet.=====

I think this would have been absolutely acceptable. You give information, "hot from the needle", and make a remark it could be not true. Perfect! This is information at least I wanted to hear as soon as possible. I think more people involved in Bonaire would have wanted to hear it.

Daniella never came back when the information appeared incorrect. She could have written something like this:

°°°°Sorry Folks, the people that informed me appeared to be unreliable°°°°°°°

Daniella, you should have done this at least!!!!

When I write a post here, I always tell where my information comes from, and give an indication how certain the information is.

I agree you have to be careful to provide "hear-say" information, but if you only provide information that comes from the official Police-communiques, I feel we would give absolute too late information to the people that love Bonaire so much.

Vince, Bas & Jerry. I think this board has to give objective information to the users. And the users are not only American tourists, also people working here in tourist-industry are using it (very often to promote their business, or at least promote the island and the tourist-industry on the island to visitors. But there are a lot of people on this board living here, and have no interest at all in the tourist-business. Why should they not be allowed to use the board? There is even a special thread for them, called "Local items".
I absolutely disagree when we filter out the negative things on the island towards tourists. Scaring things are happening here, and tourists must know about it. Everybody must know about it. Then we can work on getting things better. Keeping important information behind, because tourists could decide to go somewhere else, is the worst thing you can do. Bonaire is still relatively safe, compared to all other countries, and we can work on it, to make it even safer, if we know what is wrong.

I would be very angry when I want to go on holidays to some country, and the information-sources that claim to be information-source appear to have given me coloured information when I am in that country.

At the moment it is very silent around Marlies. One week ago, she disappeared, obviously no kidnapping, so the chances she is still alive are getting smaller and smaller.
Poor Marlies, poor parents and friends, poor Bonaire.

Harrie

@ Harrie:

I never suggested not to discuss negative things. I suggested to stick to facts. Once the information is a fact it belongs on the board in my opinion. I totally disagree that there is any value in posting "I have heard that she has been found and is in the doctors office". You as a fellow resident may know there are many stories going around about this case and posting and discussing all those stories just makes it into a big gossip column and adds nothing. I stand by my point that on this forum it should be the facts of the case only that are reported.

Bas, well said....I guess that is what I was trying to say in my post. Re Danielle's post, she was posting from the island, and we believe she is a resident. I'm afraid what happened is that she probably "heard" it and was excited in thinking Mariles had been found. Which, is not something we want here (something heard).

So, that being said, news items are fine. In respect for this serious, and heartbreaking event, information from second or third hand is not (for example, a phone call, conversation with someone, etc.), and will be deleted by a moderator moving forward.

If you do not agree with this message, please feel free to remove it, I want to submit to your rules, although I don't completely agree with them.

There was just news on the local radio. As it is difficult for people abroad, I want to tell all BT'ers what is going on in this case, as soon as I get information.

Police found on the confiscated scooter a special kind of sand, and that sand comes from a part of the island where several Kunuku's are. They are searching now on those Kunuku's with a whole lot of policemen. Hope to find more of Marlies.

Danielle, it is so true what you say, we all hope she will be found, and any positive news makes us excited.

Good question Denise, on Bonaire everybody knows what is meant with the Kunuku, but I feel it is difficult to explain.
Give it a try:

A piece of land, owned by people, normally with a house/building on it, where people live, and it is far away from the normal (coastal living areas, normally no paved roads going to it. This is where the locals live, normally under poor conditions, although also imported people sometimes prefer to live there, because it is quiet and beautiful.

Mickey, the article in 9/27 edition of Extra was essentially just a re-hash of the story reported in a Dutch newspaper that the kidnapping of Marlies was related to attempted kidnapping of the 8 year old girl whose father has drug convictions and a last name very similar to Marlies' last name and whose older 17 year old daughter works near the bar where Marlies was last seen. Harrie has posted some of this information previously. At this time, the police deny that there is any connection between the two cases. There was nothing new about the case in any of the articles in Extra.

If I understood well, they are searching the kunuku area behind Amboina

Kunuku means something like "land outside of town" , that is where to Bonaireans have their goats, they go there in the evenings and mornings and they have goat stables and/or fenced in area for the goats and often a hut to spend the week end . There are some living in the Kunuku, mostly rather close to town, but in the last years some foreigners build houses in the Kunukus.
Quite a big areas (old plantations) are not fenced in any more, often belonging to people from Curacao or Aruba.

According to the radio report earlier this afternoon, they are searching in the barrio of Mexico which is a kunuku area accessible off Lagoen Road. News on radio:
The search on Kunuku (Bario Mexico) was finished, nothing was found.
The rumours I heard were not correct.

The guy that was arrested has made a partial confession, he has been with Marlies that evening, and doesn't want to tell what he has done to her, or where she is now.

He will stay in custody at least one week.

The ad.nl article says (roughly)

The search team from Bonaire dug yesterday looking for the body of Marlies van der Kouwe, who disappeared without a trace. They searched in a trash dump near the place she disappeared, and in three other places. This has been confirmed by foreign reporters on the island.

The police aren't providing details, but will confirm that they are still searching.

They are basing their searches on information received from Ryan P. and other tips from the general populace.

Reporters have been having trouble keeping track of the police. The police have driven at over 150 km/hr (90 mph) on narrow roads to attempt to shake reporters, and led some on a wild goose chase to the police station in Rincon.

It repeats the story that Ryan P. was in prison in Curacao, and then describes the terrain of Bonaire so that foreign readers get an idea of what the search entails.

:Note that I am a student of Dutch, not a professional translator. If any of the Dutch speakers think I've made an error, feel free to point it out.

By PETER DE KNEGT
BONAIRE - An investigationteam of the police in Bonaire yesterday dug in search of traces that can lead to the body of the disappeared pharmacist-trainee Marlies van der Kouw (24).

There would be a search on a landfill near the spot where the woman has disappeared, and at three other places. That is confirmed by well-informed sources on the island.

Police spokesman Jos Klaren doesn't want to "confirm nor deny." this message, "Since we don't comment on the search, but I can say that we focused more specific on the search.''

Whether the targeted searches of the team are made based on information gained from interviews with the 24-year-old suspect Ryan P. or tips from the public, can't Klaren tell as well " because of the interests of the investigation".

Posting journalists try to follow outgoing searchteams from the police-station in Kralendijk expecting to learn more about the investigation. Yesterday morning it led even to a chase, where a police-team succesfully got rid of the pursuers during rides of 150 kilometers per hour on the narrow roads. Another trip of police-investigators to the northern part of the island lead to the policestation of Rincon. Journalists think that the suspect P. is to be questioned by Dutch policemen overthere.

P. was previously sentenced to eight years in prison for the abduction and rape of a woman. He is only three months out of prison. P. received after returning to the island no professional guidance, insiders know.

A tour on the island makes more clear with what problems the searchteam is to be confronted. As far as sight goes, all high cacti grow amid dry bushes on the cork dry land. Next of that, the island has about 150 caves as big that you can even easaly lost in them. If the body of Marlies has been dumped in one of them, it only can be found after a insiders tips.

ModCyn,

You removed the story of Simone, in which she told that there was searching in Mexico, a Kunuku-site on Bonaire.
She had her information from a telephone call from a friend, who lives next to that site.
This was also on several radio programmes. Of course, everybody on Bonaire is excited on what has happened here. And we all hope the best for Marlies, but you won't be very reassured when you hear that policemen with big plastic bags are walking around there, collecting things on that supposedly garbage dump. This, she (and I) didn't tell you in this thread, because of the "hearsay"-content of it.
They stopped the search because nothing suspicious was found, although they collected quite some things there.

I doubt if Simone (8 years on Bonaire) will ever post anything again here.....

Harrie, Simone also said said something that was disturbing. She posted information from a phone call, not something from the radio, or news. I do hope that she does not stay away from BT.

I know that a lot of things are getting "lost in transaltion"...Dutch to English, Papiamento to English, etc. However, to post that "i hear they are here...i just talked to a friend who lives there and....." is hearsay.

Lou, thank you. I didn't realize the link was to the same article.

Again, folks, we know that this is a VERY touchy subject. We the moderators are trying to keep this thread open, and let folks post news. Let's keep our heads.

From AD, A Dutch paper published today Sunday 28 september

Weblink: http://www.ad.nl/binnenland/2651197/Verdachte_stapte_in_buurt_van_Marlies.html

I translated each paragraph in to English. Some sentences will sound strange in English, that is because of my poor translation skills and my attempt to stay as close as possible to the original Dutch text. But I have to say that the quotes also sound strange in Dutch: I suppose that the quotes are translated from Papiemento to Dutch.

Verdachte stapte in buurt van Marlies
Suspect was going out in neighbourhood of Marlies

Door / By PETER DE KNEGT

The kidnapping Marlies van der Kouwe suspect Ryan P was going out at the Kralendijk boulevard with a good lady friend on the night of the disappearance of Marlies.

On that boulevard is also Karels Beach Bar where Marlies had a party with friends and stepped on her bike around 1:00 at night to go home.

The lady friend of Ryan has, according to the uncle of Ryan, Norberto Pietersz, testified to him and the police: “that she spent the evening and a part of the night with him, but that he was not with her all the time”.

“She told me that when we met with family in the house of my sister, his mother, just after Ryan was arrested by the police on Thursday. We all live close to each other in the Tera Kora neighborhood and came together at his mother just after Ryan was taken in to custody.

There was also the lady girl friend present. “We anyway all agreed at that meeting that Ryan had not behaved strange in any way between the moment of the disappearance of Marlies on Saturday and his arrest five days later. Ryan did not live at his mother, but with a daughter of a niece since he returned to Bonaire a small two months ago.” Ryan was locked up for six years on Curacao because of among rape. (Comment Arjan: or cousin Dutch language uses the same word for niece and cousin)

Sources around the police investigation report that Ryan, during his interrogations, has admitted to know Marlies and having had contact with her that evening. “But I wonder how much that says, everyone in the nightlife scene knows on another more or less” thus a catering manager.

Unclear is if Ryan also admitted his possible role in the disappearance of Marlies. According to his uncle Norberto, there is doubt in the family about Ryans possible part.

“His mother doesn’t know anymore, his 34 years brother Winston believes in his innocence, but stopped eating. They are literally all sick of it. ” Yesterday, Ryans mothers was heard again by the police and she is said to be confronted with her son. Norberto: “She is at this moment (17:00 local time – red.) on the police office to be questioned.

Althoug Norberto was ‘not token by’ his ‘actually aggressive and smart nephew’ (Comment Arjan: or cousin Dutch language uses the same word for nephew and cousin cousing) he wants to differentiate some things. “Only God knows if he did it, but there are some nonsense stories told about him. Like it is very questionable if the rape that he was convicted for is consistent with the truth. At that time Ryan had a relation with a married woman, her husband found out that she was sleeping around with him and wanted to get back on him rock-hard, on that Ryan has raped according to the police. A strange story”

Also the story of the hidden muddy scooter of Ryan is, according to Norberto, different than came out up to now. “That scooter is bought by Ryan in the weekend of the disappearance of Marlies from a fellow islander for 700 Antillean guilders. That Monday or Tuesday is came clear that he had bought a scooter that was stolen”.

“The owner, who found out, demanded the scooter back, but Ryan told him that he would only get the scooter back if he paid 1000 guilders. For that reason he had hidden the scooter in the shed at an uncle and aunt. That story we already knew before he was arrested Thursday”

Sunday the police searched on different places on the island and searched for Marlies, however without result.

Later, I will post another translated article from the Telegraaf, another Dutch paper, that paints a different picture on the suspect than the view of his uncle in the AD article. (I need some time to translate) This article is by John van den Heuvel, a Dutch crime reporter with (for a Dutch reporter) a lot of knowledge of Bonaire. I know he visited Bonaire more than once and has good contacts there. This weekend, in an other article, he called in question the Bonaire police decision not to follow the link to the “Van Kouwen family" kidnap attempt and ransom demand. He also used terms like “the blunders of the police in de first two days”.He states that police chief had to admit on Friday that his detectives had not made any contact with the Van Kouwen family. Initially he tried to obscure that by saying that “the family was approached". Schagen told that he had make inquire with van Van Kouwens wife, we proved be knew nothing at all. The Dutch article can be found here: http://www.telegraaf.nl/2046409/__Politie_negeert_geldeis_voor_Marlies__.html

De Telegraaf, ma 29 sep 2008, 05:30
Verdachte bekent contact ontvoerde Marlies v.d. Kouwe

Suspect confesses contact kidnapped Marlies vd Kouwe

The suspect of the kidnaping of Marlies van der Kouwe has made a partial confession. Based on that, experts of the police and NFI started digging on a specific plot on Bonaire.

Investigation leader John Schagen confirms that now “search is very aimed". “You are well informed". The suspect Ryan Pieters has confessed that he was in contact with the 24 year old Marlies, according to sources around the investigation. Also the also 24 year old man has implied in the interrogation that “something happened between them".

In 2002 Pieters took a Czech woman hostage on the island, who he raped for days. Also he raped before, as a 16 year old , in a violent way, a couple that caught him at a burglary. The mother of the suspect is picked up yesterday to be heard about her son.

Drie maanden geleden kwam Pieters vervroegd vrij.

Three month ago Pieters was early released from prison . The partial confession is seen as a major breakthrough in the investigation. The detectiveteam fears however that the pharmacy assistant is no longer alive. The police started yesterday, early in the morning, on a private property at Antriol. After the first forensic investigation, digging was started in the afternoon. The location is situated 3 kilometer from the place where Marlies was pulled of the bike. The property does not belong to family of the suspect. On a by Pieters hidden scooter, which is discovered at his uncle and aunt, typical red mud is found, that looks like the same soil composition on this location.

Harrie, are you asking to be suspended from Bonaire Talk? Our rules are clear, and I don't see why you continue to ignore our repeated requests to follow our rules. Stop posting hearsay! Don't post what you think you heard on the radio. People may be interested in what is going on on the island when crimes against people occur, but these false, tabloid style, sensational posts that you encourage and engage in yourself are absolutely not useful to anyone. Furthermore, I'm quite sure they would be hurtful to any friends and relatives of the victims, who may be monitoring the internet for any news.

Be good or be gone. If you feel so strongly about posting gossip, lies, and hearsay, start your own board.

I think that this whole thread has become a farce that is detracting from the seriousness of the issue.

Nobody should be posting hearsay, conjecture or inept translations of what may of may not be happening. I would go further as to say that this thread should be closed as of now.

It is obvious that it has become impossible to moderate such an emotive thread and the attempt to do so has become farcical.

I respectfully suggest that this thread is not only closed but that any further matters relating to this incident are restricted to official press reports from the Police posted by the moderators.

The friends and family of this young girl must be absolutely outraged by some of the above posts and I am sure that if it doesn't desist, it will be to the lasting detriment to this forum.

Antony.

"Harrie, thanks.

not trying to start an arguement with you modseb but modcyn posted this a couple days ago saying it was ok to post stuff off the radio.

Modseb, You made me speechless, and that is quite unusual.

But not for too long:
I have tried to inform people on this board as good as possible, I try to filter out as good as possible things that could be not true. I didn't post anything that is hearsay, at least according the definition modcynde made before, and Aaron referred to.
If you think I post things that are not in conformity to the rules the BT-management made, so feel free to remove it. I think I try to give information to all the BT'ers as good as possible, and block real "hearsay" myself. When Danielle posted the post "She's been found", I had also heard this, but didn't post it. I didn't trust the information. When I heard information about the things they found in Mexico, I didn't post it, because I didn't trust it. At this very moment I have more information, and I hope it will come out soon, (I hope it will, so that this horrible story comes to an end). But I will not post it, because it is not confirmed. Actually, from all the things I posted in this case, most of them were in the media already, and everything appeared to be true later......
I know many of the BT'ers want to be informed as quick as possible, and I am sure they are intelligent enough to read through the posts and find out what they can believe of it.
I HATE that you, modseb wants to censor posts on BT, just because you are manager, or owner or whatever of this board that could give such good information. I could agree with the comments Cyndee made, independent from my opinion on the rules the moderators made for BT in general.
I repeat, I just want to give information from in-island to people that love Bonaire, perhaps even more then I do, and that are anxious to know about what is going on here.
Modseb, I think with melancholy back to the times Jake and Linda moderated BT. We also had several discussions, but there were never such rude words as you used. Jake was such a charming person, in the way he moderated BT. You can learn quite a lot of the way he did it.........

Back to your post, Seb,

No, I am not asking to be suspended from BT, I just want to inform BT'ers as good as possible. I don't want to ignore your rules. I didn't post anything of what I THOUGHT I heard on the radio, I posted what I heard on the radio, I just translated it from Papiamentu into English, and as I am not a native-Papiamentu-speaker, nor a native-American-speaker, there could be some slight differences in my translations.

And, Seb, who is lying? I did not post hearsay, I did not post lies, I did not post gossip.

If I want to start an own board, I will do so, thanks for reminding me.

I am good, and I am not gone....

You would have done better to take an ice-cold shower before you posted your post here-above. Or did you have a pica-meal?
If you want me to be gone off this board, you will have to remove me, I can live without a board that is censored so heavily. But let this post exist, and do not remove my answer to you, (as you did during our last discussion some year ago or so, so indecent), so all readers can see what the BT-management does to people that try to avoid censorship.
You can live without a man that tries to inform BT as good as possible, and tries to find the holes in the rules to do so. Oh yes, I am controversial, What is wrong on that?
If you remove me, please don't forget to take me off the list of the BT-Angels, who sponsored BT in difficult times.

Harrie

Jay, using CAPITAL is considered shouting and we do not tolerate that on BT. Your statement regarding CNN is leaving me clueless. Most posters and readers are people who love Bonaire and are looking for information about Bonaire in general and on this page for information regarding the disaperance of a young lady. Please do act as if you care. And if you don't care, please don't post. If you continue to post like you did before, we have to suspend your account.

Also, I would like to give you a little heads up: Bonaire is a part of our kingdom, so we do need to support this part of our country.

If you happen to have some diffuculties with English, I'll post it in Dutch as well...

I know moderating such a board is not easy, but you could at least try to do it in a polite way.

Verwarring over ‘bekentenis’

Confusion over ‘confession’

Door / By PETER DE KNEGT

BONAIRE

Ryan P (27), the suspect of kidnapping Marlies van der Kouwe , is said to deny most emphatically that he is involved in the disappearance of the Dutch trainee on Bonaire.

Media reported yesterday about a partial confession of the suspect. P.
however is said to only have acknowledged that he knew Marlies from Kralendijk en the nightlife on and around the boulevard. That stated a police source around the investigation team to the AD.

“During his interrogation P has until now in no way acknowledged his involvement with her disappearance. He says he has nothing to do with it and on the particular Saturday night to have been out with his lady friend in the entertainment centre” knows a well-up source.

The investigation team does not want to go in to the outcome of the interrogations, but does deny decisive that the investigation team is supposed to have confirmed that P had made a partial confession. “In the interest of the investigation we do not make any announcement on that”.

According to the source, the policemen within the team think there is talk of poor cooperation. “They lost the direction and control over the investigation. Everyone does some investigation for his own, but there is no larger picture.”

The girlfriend of Ryan has according to an uncle of Ryan, Norberto, stated to him and the police ‘that she spent the evening and part of the night with Ryan, but that he was not with her all the time.’

Norerto: “She told me that when we came together with the family in the house of my sister, his mother, just after Ryan was arrested by the police on Thursday. We all live close to each other in the Tera Kora neighborhood and we came together after it came out that Ryan was taken in to custody. There also the girlfriend was present.

“We anyway all agreed at that meeting that Ryan had not behaved strange in any way between the moment of the disappearance of Marlies on Saturday and his arrest five days later. Ryan did not live at his mother, but with a daughter of a niece since he returned to Bonaire a small two months ago.”
Ryan was locked up for six years on Curacao because of among rape. (Comment
Arjan: or cousin Dutch language uses the same word for niece and cousin)

Ryan is said to have admitted during his interrogation to know Marlies and having had contact with her that evening.

Yesterday, Ryans mothers was heard again by the police and she is said to be confronted with her son. Norberto: “She is at this moment (17:00 local time – red.) on the police office to be questioned.

Police is searching for car and handbag of Marlies
By John van de Heuvel and Bert Huisjes
KRALENDIJK (Bonaire) – The police of Bonaire is searching for a black car for the last couple of days that possibly played an important role in the disappearance of Marlies van der Kouwe
Also assistance is asked to the inhabitants of the island regarding the missing handbag of Marlies. The pharmacy assistant was cycling with this handbag to her home, but the bag was not found after she was kidnapped. In this bag were probably her wallet and her cell phone. According to friends, this cell phone has not been switched on after she left that night. The information about the black car is taken seriously. The Police have wondered ho wit was possible to involuntary transport Marlies on a scooter.
The police received information about the involvement of a second person. Furthermore, a female relative of the main suspect would be familiar with the complete details of the kidnap.
The kidnap of the Dutch girl –now already a week and a half ago- is starting to leave its marks with the family of the parents. Witnesses saw her mother leaving the hotel, heavily crying. Painfully enough the family stays in the same hotel were the suspect was working. Also tensions within the police team of over 60 investigators are building up. Between de investigators coming from the Netherlands, Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire there are differences on the approach to take for the investigation. Specially within the team coming from the Netherlands there is irritation on the lack of professionalism as is made clear from their conversations in the local bars & cafe’s. They were not fully aware of close the community is at the Island. Also the close family ties are hurdling the investigation.
To prevent leaking sensitive information via the police to the family of the main suspect and possible other suspects, not all investigators are fully informed on the progress of the investigation. This necessary approach also brings tension between the Antilleans and the Dutch investigation team. The Dutch team and the Dutch management are sensitive matters on the island.

Again we would like to thank a member of our forum for the translation of the following:

Dutch Media: Algemeen Dagblad
http://www.ad.nl/binnenland/2657786/lsquoAllemaal_leugens_over_Ryanrsquo.html
‘All lies about Ryan’
By Peter de Knegt
BONAIRE – “He would not have gone to work after the women disappeared in the weekend? Nonsense, he picked up his lunch and I’ve brought him to his work at the Plaza Hotel at 7.50 hrs”.
The mother of Ryan P. –Virginia- strongly believes in the innocence of her son and rejects all ‘lies and nonsense” that are going around on the island. In her small –with family pictures wallpapered house at the Kaya Amazon- she is watching the media coverage the whole day on radio, in the papers and on the TV. “It is completely wrong, my son would have bought a jerry can of gasoline last Monday to burn that lady? Nonsense! I was out of gas and called him to bring me some gasoline. That’s the whole story!
My car –that has been taken into custody for research- supposedly would have been used to hide the body. Also nonsense. The night that lady disappeared the other son (who works as a security guard) took the car from 22.00 hours till 06.00 hours.
And so –according to the mother and lawyer of the suspect- there are a lot of fairytales about Ryan. A colleague of him declared that Ryan threw up 3 times last Wednesday, because he supposedly was nervous regarding the kidnapping. My client is a stomach patient and therefore takes medicine that- in combination with the chemical substance in the paint- made him sick, says Domingo.
Ryan has no full alibi for that Saturday night. “If he was at home at 01.30 that night of still going out he does not know exactly, but he was certainly not at the crime scene. According to the mother and brother of Ryan, he behaved normally after that Saturday night. He –as usual- visited us Sunday morning and was happy as always, until he was dragged by the Police out of his car”.

‘Allemaal leugens over Ryan’

Girlfriend: Ryan came home covered with mud
By PETER DE KNEGT
BONAIRE –The girlfriend of Ryan P. has declared to the Police that Ryan P. came home covered with mud on the night that Marlies van der Kouwe was kidnapped.
The advocate of Ryan –Marga Domingo- forcefully denies this statement. Also Ryan’s mother rejects this story of the “girlfriend that is no good”. Ryan has told his advocate “that he hopes this case will be solved quickly”.
On Bonaire there is a growing feeling that the police has got the wrong man. The first days after the arrest, numerous rumors and accusations were addressed to Ryan P. in the local media and on the streets, but slowly more and more people are starting to doubt this.

Ryan P. is held (with all restrictions) in a cell in Rincon. He is not allowed to have any contact with the outside world; his mother has also still not seen him. “The police has asked me if I wanted to see him, but they will have to pick me up since they have confiscated my car for investigation”, said the mother of the suspect.
Domingo is visiting her client on a daily basis. “I find him a decent client”. Although Domingo thinks Ryan will be released this Friday, she still takes into account the possibility that the Police judge (Rechter Commissaris) will hold Ryan in to custody for another 8 days given the serious matter and the shocked sense of justice of the community of Bonaire. At this moment, DNA traces are being researched at Curacao. Domingo: “normally this takes some time at Bonaire, but given the serious circumstances of this case hopefully they will speed up”.

Domingo also represents the man who tried to kidnap the 8-year daughter of the well known inhabitant of Bonaire Wout van der Kouwen.

Although there is similarity of the surnames (Marlies van der Kouwe, van Kouwen), the fact that his blonde 17 year old daughter is also living on the island, a ransom demand that was given by phone before Marlies van der Kouwe was kidnapped and the fact that van Kouwen is a well know figure in the criminal scene, Domingo does not believe that the attempt of kidnapping by her other client is connected with a possible switch of persons. “The man that tried to kidnap the 8-year old is absolutely not mentally capable to demand a ransom”.

The search for Marlies will be notwithstanding continued the coming days

Vriendin: Ryan kwam bemodderd thuis

Rayan wanted to wash his clothes immediately
By John van den Heuvel en Bert Huisjes
KRALENDIJK (Bonaire) – The Police and justice of Bonaire are -at high pace- gathering evidence that main suspect Rayan P. is involved with the disappearance of Marlies van der Kouwe.
The investigation team confiscated the clothes of the suspect in the house of his 16-yer old girlfriend Shanti. She told to the police that Rayan came home covered with mud and that “he was very upset”.
She earlier already declared that Rayan was not with her during the whole night. She furthermore declared that the suspect on Sunday “wanted to wash his clothes immediately”.
She also told the police that he was very upset. Forensic investigators have confiscated & secured the clothes immediately. They hope that traces can be found.
Also the car of the suspect’s niece –a dark blue Toyota Scarlet- was taken into custody. The car has been forensically searched for traces of the Dutch pharmacy assistant.
The police have been searching the last couple of days for a black or dark car.
The police have also gathered statements of colleagues of the suspect. They declared that Rayan behaved very nervously after the dissaperance.
Supposedly he threw up several times that day. The police searched the home of his 16-year-old girlfriend, but also the home of his niece, Rayan’s mother and his Uncles and Aunt’s place. His mother fully supports Rayan. According to her, her son was ill of the medication he took. Several witnesses saw him buy –completely upset- a jerry can, but she says this was for her car, nothing else.
The police has heard the niece of Rayan yesterday and searched her home. This niece was driving –at the time of the arrest- with Rayan in the car of the 16-year old girlfriend. Furthermore, the car of the mother – red pick up truck- was also investigated. His mother claims that her son is innocent, not only from the accusations of this kidnap, but also for the earlier crimes of which he was sentenced to prison even to the level of the supreme court. The girlfriend she calls “crazy” and she stated hat her son acted absolutely normal the last days. The advocate of Rayan stated that she expects Rayan to be released tomorrow.

Custody
The justice department will ask to extend the custody of the suspect, given the progress that is made in the case. On the small island the police searched on several locations for Marlies van der Kouwe, but with no result.

Rayan Pieters wilde kleren direct wassen

In the recent posted translations from AD and Telegraaf I missed the article below. I think it has important information so I made a translation. Although it is by now 2 days old it may still be relevant.

Note of the translator: The article, posted and translated earlier titled ‘All lies about Ryan’ (Wednesday, October 1, 2008 6:14) http://www.oldbonairetalk.com/cgi-local/bbs/show.cgi?tpc=36&post=519898#POST519898 is merged by AD with this article. So that part of the article is not translated again and left out.

Tuesday september 30 2008 ‘Discription suspect is wrong’ By PETER DE KNEGT

KRALENDIJK - The description that a Bonarian guard has given of the kidnapper of Marlies van der Kouwe, does not match the looks and clothes of the arrested P at all.
Furthermore, after a week of investigation an interrogations, the police still has not showed any solid proof that indicates involvement of P. in the disappearance of the disappearance of the Dutchwoman on Bonaire.

That states Marga Domingo, the attorney of P. in an interview with AD on Bonaire. It is for the first time that the attorney goes public about her ‘completely denying’ client.

‘He says he did not do it and absolutely does not knows the woman’. Based on where we are now, I expect him at to be a free man on Friday. I myself has not encountered any incriminating fact in the dossier’ states the attorney.

The guard, who has seen the kidnapping of the still disappeared Marlies, has testified that the man wore a black jacket and black jeans. ‘My client wore a three quarters blue jeans and a tight white shirt.

He also is not 1,80 meters as is said, and had no curls in the back of his neck. He wore and wears his hair in braid with a dreadlock or maton as it is called here. He states definite that he has not been at the place of the kidnapping.’

The from Leusden originating Marlies van Kouwe, who did a work placement on Bonaire, is missing without a trace since September 22.

Door PETER DE KNEGT Algemeen Dagblad http://www.ad.nl/binnenland/2670862/Justitie_Bonaire_ontkent_blunders.html

The main suspect in the kidnapcase of Marlies van der Kouwe, shouldn’t be already released now.

Justice blunderded in 2002 with their charge in a case of rape, by forgetting to demand the judge to put on a conditional retribution for Ryan P. in a real prisoning, That’s what his 2002 rapevictim is saying.

The involved d.a., Ernst Wesselius, denies the blunder and says that he surely considered the conditional retribution in his charge. In appeal Ryan was centenced for eight years of prison. About nine months ago he was released.

“ If Ryan was still in prison, Marlies wasn’t kidnapped, disappeared en killed”, says the victim, who is convinces of Ryan’s guilt. The woman was raped by Ryan in 2001, So judged the court in February 2002. He was just released three months earlier from another case of crime. For that crime he was sentenced for 2 years, with eleven months imprisonment and a two year probationary period. That probation ended in November 2002.

Ernst Wesselius:” I indeed considered Ryan’s conditional sentence. I treated thousands cases in mu 30 year career, but this case is even still in my dreams every day. It touches me deeply. I very clearly put higher charges considering the seriousness of the facts, the circumstances, the suspect, the greeve he caused and his probation.”

Accourding to him you can’t tell if Ryan still was prisoned if he asked ro put his conditional sentence in imprisonment, because you never can be sure how a judge judges. Besides, prisoners can also earn bonuspoints for earlier release. What that woman states is a false security.

Ryan P’s attorney, Aldebert Rooijer, puts that the District Arrorney often forget to let a conditional sentence be executed. “But it is not our job to point their failure”.

Again an arrest on Bonaire.

By John van den Heuvel en Bert Huisjes

Kralendijk (Bonaire) Police has arrested Friday a second suspect in the
case of the disappearance of the 24-year-old Marlies van der Kouwe. This was
told by sources around the investigation team.

An arresting team on Bonaire arrested a man in the neighbourhood of Niki
Boko on the island. It is the 19 year old Siegmar Marchena mostly known
under his nickname "Kucho" on Bonaire.

The team went into the house of the family of the man. When he was arrested
the family of the suspect offered resistance.

The house was immediately sealed for forensic research. The flown-in
tracker-dogs were also used at that location, as witnesses stated. End of
the week extra police-personnel and a special arrest-team were flown in.

The second suspect is a friend of Ryan P. (Rayan P.) They lived together in
the same house. The search goes on for a black car, that supposedly played
an important role in the kidnapping of Marlies van der Kouwe.

Siegmar is seen by the police as a possible accomplice for the making
disappear of the body of Marlies van der Kouwe. They suppose she is not
alive anymore.

It is three weeks ago that the pharmacist-assistance disappeared
mysteriously on the island. She was tugged from her bike, nearly in front of
her apartment. The custody of the provisional main suspect was prolonged
Thursday with another eight days.

Up to now Rayan Pieters, who was convicted for hostage-taking and rape
before, has only committed he knew Marlies. He was also in her vicinity on
the evening of her disappearance, and according to him "something" had
happened between them.

The investigation on Bonaire is made much more difficult because of the
tight family-ties on the island. Just since this week it is possible to
mention tips anonymously by telephone on Bonaire.

On the island searches have been done this week on several sites. The
investigation was hampered because of heavy rainfall. This wiped away all
tracks in the loose soil.

"The soil changes here in mud after heavy rainfall, and later in a concrete
plate" says a source around the investigation. "When her body hasn't been
washed free, it will be very difficult to find her."

*New arrest on Bonaire*
By John van den Heuvel en Bert Huisjes
KRALENDIJK (Bonaire) -- The Police has arrested a second suspect in the
investigation to the disappearance of the 24-year old Marlies van der
Kouwe as was reported by sources close to the investigation team.
The police team arrested a man in the Niki Boko area on the island. It
is the 19-year-old man Siegmar M., known by his nickname Kucho on
Bonaire. The team searched the premises of the family of them man. The
family resisted during the arrest. The premises were immediately closed
for forensic investigation. Also search dogs were involved in the search
as was reported by witnesses. At the end of the week a special arrest
team and additional police forces were flown in from Curacao. The second
suspect is a friend of the first suspect Rayan P. They lived together in
the same house. The police are still searching for a black car, which
supposedly played an imported role in the kidnapping of Marlies van der
Kouwe.
The police sees Siegmar as a possible partner in crime related to the
kidnapping of Marlies van der Kouwe. General thought is that she is no
longer is alive.
Three weeks have past since the pharmacy assistant disappeared
mysteriously from the island. She was pulled from her bike, in front of
her apartment. The custody of the main suspect Ryan P. was extended by 8
days last Thursday.
Up until know Rayan P. --earlier convicted for kidnapping and rape- only
admitted that he knew Marlies. At the night of the disappearance he was
in the same area and declared "something happened between them" that night.
The close family ties on the island trouble the investigation. Only as
from this week it is possible to report anonymously tips to the police
by phone.
Several searches took place this week on the island. The heavy rainfall
seriously troubled the investigation. It has erased all traces in the
rough soil. "The spoil changes from mud into concrete after the heavy
rainfall" according to a source close to the investigation team. "If her
body is not exposed by the rainfall, it will be very difficult to find her".

ernstig bemoeilijkt vanwege zware regenval.

Last week I wrote about the financial “damage” the parents of Marlies
van der Kouwe are suffering. Besides the grieve, the parents are also
worried by the rising expenses of their stay on the island. Many of you
reacted heartwarming. Meanwhile this problem has been solved.
Furthermore is seems that the investigation team has come closer to
solving the case. There has been a new arrest and a source close to the
investigation reported to me that a breakthrough is close at hand.
The forensic team especially makes the progress in the investigation.
Let’s hope this is true, I sincerely hope for the parents of Marlies
clarity is given on the fait of her daughter.

Mother of suspects in case Marlies is unaware
KRALENDIJK- The mother of Rayan (27) and Vincent (37) P, suspects in the kidnapping case of Marlies van der Kouwe, told on Monday that she is unaware on which grounds her oldest son has been arrested. Sunday morning he was arrested at the house of his mother where Vincent also lives. Mother and son were both still sleeping.
“The police promised to call me, but I haven’t heard anything about Vincent. I’ve seen Rayan a week and a half ago at the police station. He doesn’t say a word”, said the mother of Ryan to the ANP (press agency). “And I haven’t got my car back either. The police confiscated it three weeks ago.”
Vincent –at the time of the arrest- was unemployed. He was working in the security at his Uncle, but got fired because he wanted to take some vacation days. The custody of Rayan was extended for the second time by 8 days last Friday. This week the Judge has to decide if the custody is extended again. The advocates of Rayan and Vincent did not comment.

Inhabitants of Bonaire are finally giving information
By Peter de Knegt
BONAIRE – the inhabitants of Bonaire are- three weeks after the disappearance of the pharmacy assistant Marlies van der Kouwe- finally giving possibly usable information. This happens on the regularly police telephone line as well as the anonymous tip line that the investigation team recently introduced.
Spokesman Reggi Huggins on Bonaire is happy with this development he reported yesterday evening to the Algemeen Dagblad.
“At first, the kidnapping of Marlies van der Kouwe was not something that concerned the people of Bonaire directly, but that has changed. We are very happy with the tips and information that is now coming in. The suspects are interrogated intensively, but there are no confessions yet”.
Huggings emphasizes that the arrest of Rayans’ friend –the 19-year old unemployed Siegmar M., and his brother Vincent- are definitely not a breakthrough in the case. “It is a next step in the investigation process, but definitely not a breakthrough to the disappearance of Marlies and possibly we can get closer to the solution after the search of the premises and other searches on the island.” On the island still intensively is searched –with trained dogs- after Marlies. Amongst others in the area of the house of the grandmother of the friend of Rayan at Jato Bako.
On which grounds the friend and brother were arrested the spokesman Huggins does not want to comment “because of the ongoing investigation.”
Vincent – the brother of the main suspect Rayan- told the Algemeen Dagblad last week “literally to be sick of the arrest of his brother.” “I can’t eat anymore and do believe that Rayan has nothing to do with the disappearance of the women”, said Vincent. “My brother does not do something like that”. Also the mother of Rayan –Virginia Maria P., that now has 2 sons behind bars-, still believes in the innocence of her boys. The women that earlier intensively spoke with this newspaper does not -after the arrest of her son Vincent- “wants to have anything to do with the press”. “You all write untrue stories about my kids.” Vincent and Siegmar supposedly would have helped Rayan P. with the disappearance of the body of Marlies, so is suspected by the investigation team.
Marlies van der Kouwe (24) disappeared mysteriously after a night out close to her home after being dragged from her bike.

'Bewoners Bonaire gaan eindelijk praten'
,,Jullie schrijven allemaal onware dingen over mijn kinderen.’’

By Peter de Knegt

BONAIRE – The police has arrested a fourth suspect in the Marlies van der Kouwe crime case.
It is the 30-year old J.R.R. An other suspect –Vincent P. was released this Tuesday. His friend Siegmar and his brother Rayan are still in custody.
Heavy rainfall and wind water sprouts troubled the search of the disappeared Marlies van der Kouwe (24) seriously. Last Monday roofs were blown of houses en several houses were flooded, occupants had to be evacuated. The hotel where police spokesman Reggie Huggins stays was also flooded. “The weather makes the search of Marlies extremely difficult, part of the police force is now being used to help the people of Bonaire.” The spokesman emphasizes that there is still no breakthrough in the case. “The three suspects that were arrested have not made a confession up until know.” Sources close to the investigation team –which is led by Johan Schagen- think that they are ‘on the right track’ with the arrest of the three island inhabitants. After the arrest of Rayan P. –five days after the disappearance of Marlies-, the brother of Rayan, Vincent (37) and a friend of his, Siegmar (19) were arrested last weekend on suspicion of conspiracy to the disappearance of Marlies. The police are strongly depending on the cooperation of the people of Bonaire. They will have to talk know, otherwise the investigation team will have to work with forensic evidence only. The body must be found.
The pharmacy assistant disappeared three weeks ago. She was dragged from her bike –close to her home- after a night out.

Vierde arrestatie in zaak Marlies

Investigation team orders special coffin
*
Bad omen in case Marlies*

KRALENDIJK (Bonaire) -- The hope that the disappeared Marlies van der
Kouwe (24) will be found alive has dropped to the absolute minimum.
The investigation team that researches the disappearance has ordered a
special transport coffin from The Netherlands and transported it to
Bonaire. The carefully carbon packed coffin arrived yesterday evening by
KLM flight KL 753 on the airport of Kralendijk.
The Dutch Forensic Institute (NFI) confirmed yesterday that the coffin
was shipped to Bonaire. This led to a huge amount of rumors on the
island because this could imply that the remains of Marlies would have
been found.
Marlies van der Kouwe --who was an intern at a pharmacy store-
disappeared in the night of Saturday September the 20th. Witnesses saw
that around 1.30 a.m. she was dragged from her bike by an unknown man
and transported her on a scooter. The next day the bike and her brown
flip-flop were found in the bushes.
The investigation team yesterday strongly denied that the body or parts
of her body have been found. Last Thursday the custody of the suspect
Rayan P. was extended, but he has not made a confession. The searches to
Marlies van der Kouwe have continued.
According to the spokeswoman of the Forensic Institute the transport is
a preliminary measure. It concerns a special coffin that can transport
the body vacuum by air travel. The parents of Marlies --who are staying
on the island for the weeks-, have been informed yesterday.

*'F***** up'*
The main suspect Rayan P. gave a 'f***** up' impression when he was
taken before the Judge Commissionaire. He was told that his custody was
extended by a maximum of 60 days. At his entrance at the Court building
Rayan P. raised his middle finger. The police team sees the scenario
that Rayan did something to Marlies as the most plausible scenario.
However, other possibilities are taken into consideration as well.
Tomorrow the Telegraaf will give a special report with the latest news
about the disappearance case of Marlies van der Kouwe

Rechercheteam bestelt alvast speciale lijkkist

*Slecht voorteken in zaak-Marlies *

overvliegen.

***Grandparents Marlies under tremendous tension***
Under tremendous tension the grandparents of the possible murdered
Marlies van der Kouwe from Groningen (The Netherlands) are waiting on
news from Bonaire. A body has been found, but it is not definitive that
these are the remains of Marlies. “We think it is, but we hope –against
all odds- that is”, said the grandmother Marte van der Kouwe.
For the grandparents these are tremendous difficult times. “We fear the
worst, but until the press conference we can only wait”. What will Marte
en Jan Willem van der Kouwe do if their fear becomes true, they don’t
know. To Bonaire? “That is something we haven’t yet had the time to
consider”.

***Grootouders Marlies in enorme spanning***
