For the first time ever, my dogs are infested with tickts. I use Frontline religiously. Any remedies? I have a insect person coming today but I read spraying does not help? Will wash them daily and keep picking off the ticks. Any hints?

Not sure where they came from, these ticks.

Ann, I believe that the frontline will kill them after ahwile being on the dogs ( a few hours). There is a chemical you can use to spray the gounds. This will kill ticks and I think fleas. Have you had some rain, as when it is dry in NE, no ticks but tons of fleas.

We had a ton of rain last night, the first in months. I use Frontline religiously and bathe the dogs in the sea and in tick shampoo. Someone told me about a product that the vet sells I will investigate today.

Ann, Are they attatching themselves and feeding, or are you just finding them on their coats?

Take Michaels advise. If the Health dept will spray, why not. I know from past experience, that the Frontline or Advantix, does repel(sort of) but mostly kills the ticks once they have been on the dog or cat for awhile. And does kill them after they bite. You might of had a new hatching of ticks in your area. We have been good around here in SE Ma. They were awful in early spring. Just had my 4 legged grandson last week. We were in in out of the woods and fields, nothing on him. But March thru May was a different story. He would be covered, and I would pick them off. I would also find several dead ones in the house. Hope it resolve itself soon. They give me the creepy crawlies. And hubby has been on meds twice this year because of deer ticks.

I would had never dreamed that ticks and fleas were on the island. I thought they were only problems in the State's. I also use Frontline but we sometimes have to take our pets to a vet to be dipped in a solution that will kill them but we also have to follow up with a commercial grade yard product (from a farm outlet) most likely what your health dept is using then reapply after heavy rains. Good luck, Randy

Here is Tn we treat the yard at the start of the spring in a light rain shower use the Diazinon Granuals from the farmers co-op. Seven Dust with diazinon is what we use. The rain will dissolve the granuals so the pets don't eat it and if you step out of the yard area into the woods you will have a tick but not in the yard.

Yikes Debbie - May I suggest you try Diatomaceous Earth, It's safe for humans and animals. It's made of tiny sea critters. Make sure you get the food grade and not the pool grade. Most garden centers are now stocking it.

Thanks Timmy, we moved here to take care of my hubby's grandfather and we just do what he told us. I will look for that for next years yard treatment.

A friend of mine in Nikiboko also had a sudden Tick Attack. He turned out to have some kind of a nest in a flower pot. Once he sprayed the pot they were gone.

Wow, never seen them nesting. They are just everywhere certain times of the year. Just had West Nile confirmed in our town. Air support is suppose to be on the way. Will be using plenty of bug spray this coming Holiday weekend.

A Bonaire Talker from LHB said I should share my tick experience, so here goes....again. We have several dogs, all foundlings and strays. One that we rescued from Curasao had a severe skin disorder. The vet recommended weekly baths in TAKTIC. Her skin healed and her coat grew back. When my other dogs would get ticks, I noticed the one I was treating with TAKTIC, never had ticks. Sooo I made a solution of 1/2 (one-half) tablespoon of Taktic to a 1 (one) liter bottle of water. Applied with a small piece of toweling, not cotton. I do their faces with my finger, to be sure none gets in their eyes. The solution must make the ticks loosen the dog's skin, because they are easily removed from their coats and dropped in a jar of water. Soon, there are no ticks on my dogs and I have the 1 liter bottle of TAKTIC mix for my next application. I have to get TAKTIC from my vet. If enough of us use it, perhaps the vets will give us a reduced rate. Afterall, aren't we helping the island by reducing the tick population? Good luck!!

This stuff is a miracle. Within 10 min. my dogs are covered with ticks running away from their hiding place. The remainder I douse on the patio crevices where they often hide and in the dirt where the girls lay their bodies. The lovely owners of Lime Villas told me about this remedy last Summer. AMAZING STUFF but wash well after applying.

Thanks, Ann. Nice to know your experience is a good one, same as mine. It really does make them leave their hiding places!! And they stay away a while. No more flea and tick collars for me.

Freddie, thanks for the welcome to Bonaire Talk. I just tried to read something in another area and was told my username and password were incorrect. Guess I'm just not Bonaire Talk literate.
