I was hunting for Wanda and hit a few paddle cactus. If you know this mean son of a gun you know that pulling out the thorns is like a porcupine quill. It has barbs. Since having this happen my foot is all swollen at each area and it hurts badly like arthritis. I never had this happen. Any cures/antidotes please?

Ouch Ann,
The nopal part of prickly pear cactus (paddle) has amazing weaponry. The worst are the micro-thorns that are hairlike quills and almost impossible to find to remove. It is like dealing with fiberglass. The quills have a protein in their sap (the quills/thorns are actually leaves) that many people are allergic to.
You can try this trio of first aid for PPC splinters:
1. Use sticky tape to try to remove the exterior part of the micro-quills.
2. Take anti-histamine like benadryl if you can.
3. Use antibiotic cream after washing the wound area.
If there are larger, deeply embedded thorns that are broken off, that may need professional removal, since they get infected quickly.

Bud

Oh, Ann, this is terrible. Try some of the removal examples in the article Grunt linked up above.

Wanda...you have to find your Mommy and soon. Poor little thing.

Anti-histamine sounds like a plan, too, as per Bud's note.

Hugs for you, Ann. cb

That really bites.... Ann I'm wishing for a whole lotta sunshine your way. You deserve it - and a nice glass of wine to wash it down.
