We have found that though virtually everyone
speaks some English (and of course Dutch), folks
appreciate whatever efforts you make in speaking
Papiamentu. Our efforts tend to be VERY basic--bon
dia (good day), masha danki (many thanks), stuff
like that. There is a big Papiamentu-English
dictionary for sale in the bookstores and some
other shops (we bought ours at the marina store at
Harbour Village) that is fascinating and is
helping us to add to our pitifully small
vocabulary. Bonaireans are the nicest people in
the world and will help you learn if you ask!
There are also some "colorful" expressions that
you might get a chuckle out of learning (don't ask
in mixed company!).
