Half a wheel of gouda used to be 19,00. It went up in the Fall to 22,00 and now is 31,00. What's up with that?

Ann we are having price inflation here too. I feel bad for my friends that have kids. Several of the cereal brands have shot up to $5.00 a box. It is all being blamed on the cost of fuel. Not sure if it is the same reason, but I wouldn't be surprised if that is what is causing your prices to go up as well.

Annie...there are literally dozens of brands of cheese and some are quite inexpensive. I have seen young from 30 a wheel all the way to 50. There are a few wholesalers in Curacao who are importing less. Also you have to remember that we buy our cheese in Euro. So what used to cost me 20 euro ( $25) now costs me $30. Also, my freight has gone up 25% due to fuel charges from the importers. Also, as a retailer, my cost of electric to keep the cheese cold has almost doubled in the past 18 months. Not complaining, just letting you know.

I am aware of the rise in the cost of fuel and other factors. Just curious why Gouda is so $$ and other cheeses are the same price.

Because it's so Gouda. LOL Sorry Annie, it just came out. Everything up here is going out of control as well. Oil dictates the price of everything in the world, except maybe prostitution. Other that that, a barrel goes up, everything goes up. One of the teachers in my school is doing a really cool unit on economics with jr. high kids. It gets them to really understand the dynamics of inflation, recession, and god forbid, depression. I think it also helps them to see how much their parents are struggling in this economy, and stfu about getting a new Ipod or a $200 designer pocketbook.

We paid about 49 NAF (including tax) for a full 4 kg wheel of Gouda at Warehouse in late October. One possible reason for the increase is the exchange rate between the $/NAF and the Euro. With the Gouda coming from Holland it is likely originally priced in Euros and then converted to NAFs at a worsening exchange ratio. But the taste compared to what we have been able to get in the States makes it worth the price. Keep wondering how to get someone to bring another wheel back for us when they are returning form their trip to Bonaire.

one reason is also that the EEG (Holland) scratched the export subsidy on all Milk and milk derived products like cheese and butter. the subsidy used to be about 4 Fl a Kg on cheese.

Does anyone know where you can store things like scuba equipment or windsurfing stuff or even a car when you leave the island. Is there any "self storage" on the island?

Ron, I imagine that Nancy is new to the board, and thus not familiar with the topics and navigation. Maybe try being a little nicer and more helpful next time?:-)

We too were curious about the price of cheese. Actually my wife dug out our old receipts after insisting too me the cheese had really gone up significantly. In July of this year we purchased a full wheel of Kaas Gouda Jong at the Warehouse for 36.25 Guilders. Last week we paid 58.25 Guilders for the same cheese.
