Corey,
Bonaire is not known for a place to go clubbing and thankfully it's not a spring break hot spot either. There is a nice beach bar; Karel's which is downtown on the water. Have been there a time or two. It's nice but we're not nightcluby folk.

Most of us aren't in Bonaire, currently; sad but true :-)

Have a wonderful time on your March trip. I am sure you'll love the diving & the people & the food! Enjoy a Bright or cocktail at Karel's and come back here and post your trip report; we'll be here.........

Thanks for that reminder Ann! Moogie was also at Cactus Blue, one night, when we were there in July. Forgot about his grooving :-) He's great.

Cory, you'll have a blast!!!

Is Disco E Wo Wo still there? Used to be upstairs on Kaya Grande. (Not that we ever went--too late a night for us!)

We (by 'we' I mean everyone I know, that's local, and in the 39+ crowd) miss E WoWo's terribly! Unlike all the "night-clubs" that exist now, E WoWo's had: air-conditioning, a real dance floor, AND, most importantly, local/latin music for us to merengue & salsa to. Not everyone is diving all day, and asleep by 9pm--some of us live & work here, and would love a place like E WoWo's to go back to (a place free of house/beat music, rap, etc.-stuff you can really dance to, not just jump up and down, or grind/squat like you're working for tips).

OMG, I've become my mother.

Ruth, we (and with we I mean you and the Dutch connection... :-) ) might think about starting a simular "club". I know we have enough experience with the drinking part... :-)

E WoWo's was fun way back, but if I remember right, it started to slide for a younger crowed, that killed it.

Cory, Little Havana also plays some very cool jazz. Has one he(( of a LP collection. Serves small plates at times.

For cigars, see Michael at C-n-B.

Sad realization the day we open our mouths and our mothers speak. How familiar that sounds!
What about Hollandse Patio--have I got that spelling right? We did some early evening dancing there on our last trip--large floor, tables, live music. Still in operation?

E WoWo's did slide to a younger crowd in the later 90's (with a few owner/mgt changes)--I could never figure out why they wanted to cater to a bunch of kids who'll only buy a bottle of pop and ask for 4 cups of ice....over us older booze hounds that can outspend & outdrink the young'uns and still dance till 2am! Could explain its dormancy all these years. Martin, finding places to drink will never be a problem here-it's our national past-time--shocking, but I'm pretty sure more (local) people drink here than dive! And you can drink more when you dance, since you're working it off...

Finding latin dancing (merengue & salsa) is somewhat random-a band here & there once in awhile, which I usually hear about a day late. We enjoyed E WoWo's so much because on Fridays, you could hit a couple of happy hours around town, sometimes pick-up an early dance at Karel's, then end up dancing at air-conditioned E WoWo's till closing. And of course, Wednesdays were Lady's Nights!

I like most types of music, but for dancing, want salsa. Jerry, I'm right with you about Tumba music (and it is the season again!). I've never developed an appreciation for it, the main clue being that it makes me want to jam ice picks in my ears. Hmmm, might have heard my mother say that about the Sugarhill Gang...

Ruth...l...m...d...a...o...you need to start a blog, you got the writing skills to make it all interesting:-)

I'm also 39 and holding...that's my story and I'm sticking to it...

I always think I'm "cool" by listening to what I think is the music the "kids" are listening to until I ask Dylon if he's heard of the band, and he's like "no"...then it puts me back in my place...lol!

Besides Tumba, 'reggaeton' & Marilyn Manson-type music makes me want to reach for the ice pick too. I love the song/video Rockstar, by Nickelback...I got some rolled/glazed-over eyes from friend's teenagers. Apparently, they're not really a "rock" band (too Pop-ish I guess). Eh, 'whatever'--it's my i-Pod and I can afford more songs than they can anyway!

Jan and I were in the car, ready to drive out, when he got a call...had to wait for a friend to come over & get a racket. I had just made a cd that included Copacabana....so I didn't get mad about waiting, I got even, by locking the doors & singing along every word at the top of my lungs (couldn't carry a tune if it had a handle!). I'm sure most 39 year olds know all the words to that song...same as American Pie.
;-)

Ruth, I need to be sure to come see you next time on island. We have come every year since 1994 :-) I like you...........

Ruth, when the boat people are in town, change the name from KFC to Copacabana, add some flashing lights, offer a free subway token to Rancon to the boat people, and charge bubble.

I saw Barry Manilow in concert when I was, um, 14-ish? I think it was when "Copa" came out (ok, look up its release date & do the age-math you geniuses; I'm sticking to 39 no matter what). He was in spandex & sequins. Maybe feathers too. This is when my mom (who took me to the concert at the then "Garden State Arts Center"), had to explain why some men like to wear tight spandex & sequins.... I'm surprised he can still sing with all of the obvious nip-tucking he's done!

Aw Jerry, the boat people are cute & entertaining--all of them toddler-ing off the ship, and wandering around, just to look for a toilet to poo in, so they can leave their mark on Bonaire (they've ALL been told to poo on every island, rather than use the toilets in their own cabins, which are merely for decoration; they get a discount for this). Then they buy a few beers, a bottle of water, some ice cream (because ice cream on vacation has NO calories), relax & enjoy the views--same as many of us do. Pod-men seem to enjoy Bonaire in particular, because you can walk around drinking beer, and there's only so much damage the Pod women can do shopping (unless they go for the Rolexes!).
;-)

Funny - I was just wondering today what impact the pod people have on your business Ruth. Hoe much of a difference do you see when the cruise ships are in? No really - that was what was on my mind while I was driving in to work...all 5.2 miles of it.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Ruth van Tilburg (Experienced BonaireTalker - Post #786) on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 - 6:50 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

5.2 miles-yikes! I can't even hear an entire song from my house to KFC. I have to drive to the airport if I want an entire song+.

In general: We sell a lot of beer & soft drinks to the passengers, my employees enjoy meeting them--chatting and answering the usual questions about their island, and I believe the passengers enjoy meeting them (they tip well, and many put money in the animal shelter collection box on our counter). The crew comes in shifts for our chicken. The ship makes downtown lively and different for a few hours; a nice change of pace.

How far are you from Nashville? What's the weather like there in Feb? I've got to be there for the annual convention then...if/when the temp. dips below 75 here, we consider it cold. Last winter, I think we hit a low of 74 (at night)!

Can BT write it off as "Market Research" (we'd have to check the temperature of the beer, as well as the quality of the dance-floor, etc.)? And more importantly, can you stay awake past 23:00?

Ruth, Nashville at that time of year can be quite chilly. Any where from the 20's to the 50's but could be warmer just depends.

Patrick is correct. I am 4 hours from Nashville as I live in the far northeastern part of TN... in Appalachian Country! It's beautiful here and actually pretty moderate temperature wise...but I'll take Bonaire temps right now. I lost all my insulation and now I am FREEZING!!!!!!!!!! When in February will you be in Nashville? We have to be there for the state swimming finals which is the first weekend of the month. If you are in for the conference we'll have to get together.

No, I'll be there Feb 11-17 for the KFC Convention--it's at the Gaylord Resort, which is apparently all glass/atrium enclosed. I won't be leaving the site if it's that cold outside!

Free time is actually one thing they NEVER give you at these conventions. The planners must take a clue from prime-time TV scheduling: put shows people want to watch (like how the newest fryers work--ooooh!), around shows they don't (why we're raising your royalty fees again), so they'll stay tuned to get to the next good show... And they conveniently scheduled it to end over the President's day weekend, making travel time longer & more expensive. Yes, this is my life...but at least Bonaire is my home!
