Hi,
What is the name of the place that has goat's milk ice cream? I'm allergic to cow's milk, but would love to have ice cream while in Bonaire.

Jean

You will find THE best homemade ice cream in the Caribbean at Prisca's in Rincon. Just a few of the many flavors include mango, coconut, banana, rum raisin, sour sap, etc. The shop is just off the road to Washington-Slagbaii Park, on your left down a little alley - they have island hours, just follow the trucks with dive tanks. Oh, bring Guilders, they don't take dollars !!!! (or AMEX).

Yes, we've been hearing about Prisca's for years, but nobody had ever mentioned GOAT'S MILK ice cream before! Jean could have some if it's really made from goat's milk. If it's confirmed that we can get goat milk ice cream, a visit to Prisca's will go to a "number one" priority on our next trip's activity list. Kelly, thanks for the glimmer of hope, Jean hasn't had anything but some kind of rice based 'ice cream' substitute for years. Never even thought about looking for goat's milk ice cream, even though we've been getting goat milk cheese for quite some time.
Thanks,
Chet

Chet,

I'm not sure Prisca's uses goat milk (lechi di kabritu?) - but definitely something to check into!

Thank's Jake, with all the goats on the island, it's at least more likely than around here in northern Illinois (10 miles south of Wisconsin state-line).
Ah, no thanks Kelly, don't think Jean would be desperate enough to try Iguana ice cream.

It is much creamier than other ice cream so I am betting on the goat. (at least it was years ago when the original lady was running it.)
2 regular cups of ice cream at Prisca's were around 5,25 gilders -- we just put a few guilders in Ed's bathing suit pocket for the way back from a dive up north. (He does wear a wet suit so it didn't fall out.)

You can ask anyone in town and they will direct you. Or e-mail me and I can try and give you directions.

The milk is from Denmark and is powdered...the do take dollar, guildes and sometimes other foreign currency. They are closed on Thursdays and you don't need directions...just go to Rincon, ask a kid on the street and he will gladly show you the way! BTW, the have an ad in the Rincon Section of the Bonaire Dinng Guide. You can also buy Priscá's ice cream at the little snack accross from the Soccer Stadium in Playa....

I forgot...it is not goat's milk but from a cow. It comes in two sizes now. Small is nafl 1.65 and large 2.25.

Chet & Jean - Life WITHOUT ice cream???? A travesty....get yourselves a little Donvier hand churner and make your own with goats milk/cream! This little device makes a very fine textured pot with good overrun! Green Tea is my fave; I make it cause I can't buy it anywhere.....I can't even bribe my Haagen Dazs co-workers to get me any :-{

If you want help putting a recipe together shoot me a note direct - once a product development scientist, always......just can't get THAT particular hat off of my head! I just can't IMAGINE life without ice cream!

Dara,
Yes, now that Kelly put the thoughts of goat's milk ice cream in our minds, I guess the only solution is getting our own ice cream maker. I'll look for the one you named, and start searching for a source of goat's milk. Now I wonder if we can get "Ice Cream Maker' added to what's included in "Fully Equiped Kitchen".
P.S.- Both Jean & I were born & raised in Minnesota; Shoreview & Centerville (along the Ramsey county/Anoka county line).

It is incredible how small the world really is. I recently discovered there are some Bonairean expats that live about 5 miles from me.....I'll be carrying an extra suitcase in April :-}
If you can't find a Donvier, look for French Pot - maybe at some place like Williams-Sonoma.

Chet, is your comment directed at us???

Alan & Joan,
Well, I started to add a comment like "What do ya think, Alan & Joan?", But I didn't know how many readers would catch the reference, so I left it more as a "wishfull thinking" general question. I wouldn't really expect anybody to stock a condo kitchen with such a uncommon item. But just in case; are there places on island to buy goat's milk?
Regards,
Chet
P.S.: For those new to the site, we rented Alan & Joan's beautiful two bedroom condo at Sand$ for week & 1/2 in January.

We don't know of any place but that does not mean it's not available. We have been to Bonaire ten times and find something new on every trip. We will keep your suggestion in mind!!!

michael, do farmers keep a herd of milking goats?
my aunt had 2 nanny goats to milk and they jumped up on a platform so she could milk them. they were so nice and tame.

I've also seen canned goat milk on island - last time was in the Food King supermarket on Kaya Korona, although I've recently heard that they may have closed again...
