From Amigoe today

Explode old explosives
KRALENDIJKThis morning, the marines started with the explosion of 500-kilo old dynamites that have been stored for more than 25 years in a building behind the Flamingo Airport.

According to Deputy Lt. Governor Ubaldo Anthony, the government has acquired the explosives at that time and has never used them. Even though the explosives can no longer be used, they are still dangerous. Besides, the explosives are not safely stored in the building that is no longer in good state. The BC has therefore decided to call in the marines to take care of them. These have taken precautions, so that the public do not experience much inconvenience of the explosives. They can hear the explosions and feel the vibrations in the neighborhood. The people that life in the area will not be inconvenienced by dust, because this has also been taken care of. The marines have conducted a risk-analysis of the work and have sent experts on explosions and safety to Bonaire. They have also considered the environment. The work will continue in the weekend, until all the material is exploded.

They should have waited until New Year's Eve and then no one would have noticed anything special.
