What things should we be collecting to bring to the orphanage, and how would we find it once we are there?

You can call me at 717-4781 or cell 790 4781 The director will make arrangements to meet you and have the items we are collecting. I if you wish, I can forward her email address to you as well so you can get the answers directly. FYI..the kids are not orphans, but sadly, come from homes where the parents have neglected or abused them.

It is not an orphanage! It is for kids whose parents are unable or wont care for them as well as some with social problems. The Director, Ria Evers Doktor, would be happy to meet any and all folks who would like to visit.

Another curious question but how does a country of 15K support a residential home/school? Do the kids come from other islands? Just curious. Hmm..Do they need a counselor/social worker?

All the kids are local. It is more like a group foster home. The government does given some financial support but the rest is made up by donations. Unfortunately, the budget is very, very tight and recently I heard that they might have to cut back in services. The children attend the local public schools.

Just noting that the Sister Maria Hoppner Home is only one of many opportunities to help out on the island. The following in copied from the Bonaire Reporter's suggestion of volunteer opportunities. And of course there are more, such as clean-up drives, and contributing to the Klein Bonaire fund.

Thanks Bob, good causes all. Let me put in a "plug" for the Animal Shelter. They are the hardest working group of folks I have ever meet. You will find them at every Manager's Party with local crafts for sale. The receipts and any donations go to the shelter for food and their spay and neuter program. Unfortunately when there is not enough to go around, the animals really suffer.

My husband always kids around with me as he doesn't think that I would have enought to keep me busy once we retire in a few years to Bonaire.--That is so wrong------ Being an avid animal lover and envolved with local chapters of the Humane Society there will be plenty to keep me busy------Donkey Sanctuary, and The Animal Shelter to name a couple.
