Jerry

Actually, I have been very busy, specially for a retired person, but also I am a bit fed up with BT.
It is definitely no fun when you are having a vivid and nice discussion on BT with the moderators, and you really make a point, (and have fellow BT'ers on your side), that you get a big kick in your *ss, and the thread is closed after that, so the moderators have the last word, and you cannot make any comments anymore. Don't tell me, it is there bare right, I know. They own BT.

But this simple remark of one of the moderators woke me up again.

BTW a real "grumbler" (found it in the dictionary, I hope it is correct) you will never get his mouth shut.

Harrie

Remark, I changed *ss in *ss, to prevent problems.

H.

As I said, welcome back Harrie.
I to have been slapped, but, that's the way the game is played, and it's better then it was. Still needs some fine tuning.

Welcome back Harrie.

Freddie named her link in English, which is Queen Beatrice, not Koningin Beatrix. Koningin Beatrix doesn't mean anything in English. In Dutch it means Queen Beatrice. You could have argued that she should have used Queen Beatrix, and I would have backed you up while being completely embarrassed for you at the same time. But expecting her to use Koningen is senseless.

Harrie, I found the following incomprehensible.

"BTW a real "grumbler" (found it in the dictionary, I hope it is correct) you will never get his mouth shut." Whose mouth?

here is what Angela posted a few days back..
looks like you may meet Her Highness up close and personal.. No times on the flight I would imagine that is a security issue..

Wednesday November 8th:
- Official welcome ceremony at the airport
- Visiting Reina Beatrix School
- Visiting Klein Bonaire/Stinapa/Sea Turtle
Conservation
- Reception with Governor

Thursday November 9th:
- Visit Rincon, local market

Hi Seb,

I wanted to use the name "Querulant" for my self. I consider myself as a person that wants to look at the world and its people in a bit different (and specially critical) way then most other people do. I know many people consider me as a criticaster, although I always try to keep people in their own value. (I know that is not usually done on this board). But I like to make remarks (sometimes a bit overdone or exaggerated) to make other people think about themselves and about their opinion upon others. I consider "Americans" as not the most open minded people on this planet (sorry for the generalisation). This doesn't mean that I dislike Americans, or hate them. Not at all.

The translation in my dictionary for "querulant" is: Querulous person, grumbler. I thought the translation "grumbler" was not really according to the word "querulant", so that's why I made the remark about the dictionary. Actually when you look back in the English/dutch dictionary for the word "grumbler" you will not find querulant, but things like "knorrepot, brombeer and mopperaar". And these words don't comply with my own feeling about my behaviour. So Querulant would be the best, but according to my dictionary, that doesn't exist in English.
My remark about the keeping my mouth shut means nothing more or less than that I will not accept any action of whoever in the world to make me keeping away from making remarks or give comments or answers. Even not the very unpolite and authoritative way the moderators finished a discussion with me some months ago. This was a very poor reaction. I really don't want to reopen that discussion anymore, but if others want to.......?

Bonaire is part of the Dutch Kingdom, and our Queen in Koningin Beatrix. Dutch is the first language here, together with Papiamentu, although many people on this board think English/American is our first language. Wrong. As mentioned in some other statements, I will not talk about Jos Struiken when meaning George Bush, or Willem Clinton, when talking about his predecessor. So please call our Queen Beatrix in stead of Beatrice. Perhaps even better Koningin Beatrix. We (in the Netherlands) also speak about President Bush in stead of Voorzitter (or Premier) Bush, what it would be in real Dutch.

What made me react on this thread was the unpolished and authoritative reaction on a new BonaireTalker who wrote her first post (and profile)in capitals. The BT-moderators (owners of this board) should perhaps be a bit more client-friendly in the future? Just a suggestion. Don't fall over me, being a moderator isn't easy, I know, I do such a kind of job myself. And once again, generally spoken you do a good job, but please listen to comments of users, in stead of going icy your own way.

Harrie

Ann, just read your posting again ...why should the island shut down ??? We are not Wien (Vienna - Austria) at the time of the President Bush visit ! If you are not really interested, you will barely notice that the Queen is on the island ... some more Dutch flags perhpas with an extra Orange banner (the Royal Family name is Oranje-Nassau - Oranje is Dutch for Orange) - as far as I know she will take residence in Bellafonte as do the Dutch politians when on Bonaire. When the crown prince and his wife were on Bonaire and went to The Windsurfplace, no special security at all, they were staying with Elvis on the balcony watching the Bonaire Kids windsurfing and a some interested bystanders on the beach - far from crowded.

Harrie, I believe the word you are looking for is gadfly. You might also try curmudgeon.

Brigitte, my point was it's quite a small mistake, but to say we should use Koningin is just Harrie's way of being funny.

When I have tried to nicely correct people privately about nettiquette, ie all caps = yelling, I've gotten some weird and nasty e mails back, enough so that I too, like Freddie, make those corrections publicly, online.

I believe we saw the prince and his wife swimming from the Bellefonte, when we were staying nearby.

Thanks Seb,

Gadfly is in the dictionary, but querulant is definitely something else, but it come somewhere near to it, Curmudgeon not listed.

Europeans, and specially Dutchies have a different feeling for humour. That's also what makes fun to be a querulant on a board like this. It really is a pity that there are so few Dutchies that gave the guts to go in discussion with Americans.

Just a few comments. First, the moderators tend to be a bit heavy handed and should refrain from public chastisement of "offenders" at least for the first infraction. A private email should suffice.
As for who "owns" Bonaire, it is safe to say (at least for now), it is Antillean and that the Dutch, Americans, South Americans, etc. are all "foreigners" and should act like invited guests. Harrie is a unique addition to the island and his way of communicating, while not always apparent, is as he says, thought provoking and makes for an interesting populace. We need a few more like him and also a few who are his antithesis for balance. We used to have another discussion board (the old Bonaire.org) and perhaps it is not too long before another is born. Competition breeds excellence!

Hi Michael,

I completely agree with your words about being heavy handed. That is exactly what I meant with my first remark in this thread.

On the other hand, the moderators told me when I made a remark about their behaviour about half a year ago, that they officially own BonaireTalk, and that my remark about the posters on BT having some "rights" was absolutely incorrect. They own BT. That's it, and that's what we have to live with.....

And I also feel that although BT is based (theoretically) on Bonaire, the people abroad have also rights to tell things, and to influence the behaviour of the so-called moderators.

I know there are a lot of Dutchmen reading this board, but most of them don't have the guts to post on this board, mainly because of the domination of americans here, and afraid of making mistakes in language, and getting striked down.
I personally feel it as a pity that there are so few dutchmen on this board, it is fully influenced by american people. Not reflecting the real composition of the people that live on Bonaire, and even not the people that visit Bonaire.
Not to talk about the locals, you never ever see one on this board.

I don't know anything about the old Bonaire.org board, never seen it or been there. Of course some competition would be good, but I hoped we could change BT in the way I do , but I don't think that really works.

Because I also have the feeling that BT is less visited then it was a few years ago, I asked the moderators (in a private e-mail) if they have benchmarks, and goals, quite a normal question when you "own" a company. I never got an answer.

Harrie

Can we please take the bashing/criticizing/complaining about how the moderators do, or do not, in your opinion do, or do not do their job to a new thread please? I personally was hoping to keep this one about Queen Beatrix and the lovely pictures being posted. I'd hate to see it turn into something about the moderators, and not the Queen and the Prince.

Many years ago, when I came to Bonaire, to live there, I arrived at the airport, and it was totally covered in orange, orange festoons, orange balloons, plenty of it. I thought, "what a surprise", I thought friends of mine on Bonaire had done it, to welcome me. It was a big disappointment that later that day the Koningin and/or the Kroonprins were to arrive on Bonaire too. They were here for a Royal visit, I was just here to live on this marvellous island.

We want to go to the Ricon Market tomorrow, and I hope I don't forget my camera, so I can post some pics of her. We also plan to go to the opening of the Johan Cruyff Court by the queen. Johan Cruyff is the world most famous football-player (Yes he is, never heard of him?)
Brigitte, if you make pictures of the queen, be aware to use a wide-angle-lens, because of the size of the hats of the queen. They are also famous. She must have thousands of them.
It is a pity they are quarreling so much about the paintings that have to be exhibited at the Kas di Arte, which is also to be visited by the queen tomorrow.

Cynde, who XXXXXXX? (Not posted by Harrie)
