A teacher at SGB (the high school) has asked me to pass along the following request:

Americans support SGB-project “Reading English brings you further in life!”?

By this the section English As A Foreign Language of SGB Bonaire would like to bring under the attention of our Anglo-American residents and visitors that we are in an urgent need of English reading books for secondary education. Levels of books needed:

*Level 2 Elementary (600 words)
*Level 3 Pre-Intermediate (1200 words)
*Level 4 Intermediate (1700 words)
*Level 5 Upper Intermediate (2300 words)
*Level 6 Advanced (3000 words)

All second-hand books of the above mentioned are welcome as long as the contents are not strictly for adults and are written by quality authors.

When you return from the United States or the United Kingdom please think of us and take some books with! You can drop them of at Kaminda Gurubu #12 or phone 7174300 to ask for a pick-up of the books. Thank you on behalf of our Bonairean youngsters!

Ronald Tetteroo

Please note that our own big-hearted Michael Gaynor has graciously agreed to serve as a drop-off point for these books. So please check your bookshelves and throw a few books in the suitcase next time you come down. Also any books on tape (or CD) with the book would be much appreciated.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions and I thank the generous BT community in advance!
Alex

I've previously donated books in English to the library in Kralendijk (quite a while ago), but they didn't seem real enthusiastic. It's good to know there is a specific place that needs them. We'll be happy to donate some books next time we're on island. Thanks for posting.

There are some very good books written by recognised authors, eg Joanna Trollope, Roddy Doyle, with simplified vocabulary. They were published earlier this year and were excellent. I will try to find out more and fetch a few. I know there was a cracking ghost story.

Alex, if we wanted to ship some books where would we ship them to?

I've found several web sites for high interest/low vocabulary books for teens. I'd be willing to purchase them and bring them with me when I visit Bonaire in December but it would be helpful to me to know what type of books the students are interested in reading. Many of the books are on a grade 2-4 reading level but relate to teens. Is this what you need?

Sue,

That sounds absolutely perfect to me, but since this is not my project, could you please send me the links and I will check with those directly involved before anyone (you!) spend money :-).
Thank you!

And thanks to you all for your generosity.

Alex

Hi Alex - I've checked out the following websites:
http://www.hip-book.com/HIPsenior.html
http://www.orcabook.com
http://www.capstonepress.com
These websites have a wide variety of books at lower grade levels suitable for teens. Like a said I'd be happy to purchase some for the students.

Found it, they are called it Quick Reads and are published by Bloomsbury. I know there are some really good titles for boys and they are not expensive.I know from experience that it is often hard to find appropriate material for teens that is has simple enough vocab but is still interesting. My luggage allowance is rather small from Europe but I think we can manage some.

Hello all,

Sue, I am told that the juvenile fiction books from Orca look great--thank you!

And of course any juvenile books gathering dust on the shelf are most welcome too!

Thank you all for the overwhelming support of this project!

Alex

Is there any interest in Harry Potter books? I have duplicates of several of them.

Hi Ross,

I think some Harry Potter books would be great. Although some of them are quite long, I think they'll still be used. I used to work in a library and was always amazed (and thrilled) at reluctant readers (and the 7 and 8 year olds) tackling an 800 page book!

Thanks!

Hi everyone. I received the first donation(s) of books today. Thank you so much! We still need more, so please keep us in mind. And many thanks to St. Michael Gaynor for being our drop-off point :-).

I have posted a few books from UK to Michael, I wonder if they will arrive before we do on the 21st Oct? If they are suitable let me know and I will send more. Teachers I work with are quite interested in this so keep us informed.

Hi Julia,

Thank you so much. The last time someone sent me a package from the UK it took almost 5 months, but I'm sure that was an aberration :-). I will of course let you know as soon as they arrive. We very much appreciate your help and your interest.

Thanks again,
Alex
