Which cellphone provider is best? And would you get prepaid or postpaid? We will be living on the island and call mainly locally (within Bonaire) and to Curacao. Once in a while to Netherlands.

I thought Michael rents out phones...I'm looking for a permanent solution. Is he still the guy to go and see?

Bas.

i'd start with michael and follow his lead. he might direct you to the former cellular one (i forget the current name) or to telbo for a permanent phone. i think he sells phone cards for all the carriers on bonaire.

I think Michael can sell you a phone too. I agree, talk to him first.

Sharon,

There were people complaining last week that Cingular roaming had stopped working here, and I found similar problems with my T-Mobile phone here recently. Both used to roam (even for data services) on Bonaire as recently as July. I'm hoping the lack of roaming is temporary (but when it worked it wasn't cheap - $1.50-$2.00/minute for voice and $0.015-0.020 per kilobyte of data).

You may want to simply get the unlock code for your GSM phone from Cingular and then buy a local GSM chip from Telbo or Digicel and use that.

As far as satellite radio services, I was told at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this past January that the satellite footprint for XM and Sirius does not cover points below about Puerto Rico. In one case, to prolong the life of the satellites, they actually power them down as they loop south over Mexico and the Caribbean (or so they said). That said, bring your radio down, try it, and let us know if it worked!

Jake
