As this was the topic of discussion a while back, thought I'd post this:

Police will take actions against motorcyclists

BONAIRE – The police is going to take actions as per immediate against irresponsible riding motor- and scooter riders. For years already people have been complaining about this category of road users that ride very hard and make a lot of noise.

The people in the area of Kaya Jan N.E. Craane, between restaurant It Rains Fishes and City Café are afflicted by stunt motorbikes. The residential areas around the center of the city are also having trouble with the noise of the motorbikes, especially in the nightly hours. This motoring performance endangers the users of the public roads. The elderly Roosje Pieters was recently killed in a traffic accident. The management of the Police Corps of Bonaire indicated that they will take actions against these motor- and scooter violence. The motorbike or scooter will be confiscated and the judge will decide whether the owner will get his or her vehicle back.

Great news! While we were there we saw many of these "wannabe" stunt drivers nearly kill themselves in front of diners along the ocean front. For everyone's well being I hope they put an end to it!

They did already. Last weekend a motorbike and a car were racing in town and the police did take action! Both the motorbike and the car were confiscated. Later that night the frustrated owner of the bike smashed the window of the benneton shop (kaya grandi).

HOORAY!!! I must confess I dislike noise pollution as much as littering.. And this is from someone who has ridden motorcycles for 25 years. Nothing against bikers, only when they have to soup them up to make so much noise declaring to all in the vicinity.."look at me, see what I've got between my legs"..Rant over....

hmmmmmmmmmm....

I wonder if the island residents also tar all the tourist divers with the same brush just because of the disruption and degradation that a small minority causes.

This pattern of thought does little to enhance the image of tolerance and understanding of this list. Remember there are alot of ways to enjoy this island each one of which impacts every other person on it.

The result of intolerance is a harsh reality in the news everyday. Personally I try not to contribute to it.

FatBoy.

David,

No one here has put down ALL Bonaire motorcycle riders, only those who are breaking the law by speed, reckless driving or noise.

The lawbreakers and reckless are fair game, biker, diver, whoever, as shown by the Bonaire police actions.

pictures were just for fun, nothing against bikers on bonaire, even my little kids love motorbikes. The reason this item was in the paper is because a few bikers cause lots of problems (trying to produce as much sound as possible, dragracing, resulting in 2 deads in a year on such a small island), and police actions were not taken until now. Imagine a motorbike producing sound like a plane cruising your street in the middle of the night regularly, and your kids wake up all the time. This is what happened time and again, and although it was reported every time action was not taken. This is why we are happy that things change now (I think the new police chef is really going to make a change). It were only a few guys causing the problems, nothing against all others.

I think along with most of us, I have nothing against motorbikes and riders. I do object to seeing people attempting things that are dangerous to themselves and others, and illegal in most places! I was worried we would be sitting down to dinner and one of these riders would lose control and injure or kill themselves along with people sitting or walking near by. I agree intolerance is unacceptable when aimed at someone's ethnicity, religion or customs, this issue doesn't fall into any of the those categories. Just my 2 cents.

"Bikers" are fine folks - most of whom wouldn't want to be seen on a crotch rocket.
The brats that intentionally modify their scooter exhaust so as to be as intolerably loud as possible and then inflict same on the residents of this fine little burg should be forced to relinquish their "toys".
As for the idiots that enjoy screaming through the middle of town and tearing up neighborhood streets to grab some adrenaline...they'll kill themselves off eventually.

Are we "real bikers"? Probably not to the hard core group of yesteryear. But we sure enjoy our Friday rides and 3 or 4 night trips. We recently returned from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. This photo is from the overlook near the Black Canyon National Park near Montrose, Colorado....where Dara used to live.

I do agree with stopping the "crotch rockets" screaming around on Bonaire. But then again, I prefer the thump, thump of a good traveling bike. :-)

That, my biker comrade, is the difference. It is what causes bikers to be bikers and all the rest fall into the "cheep thrills" file
There will always be a place for bikers in the world
There will never be a place for the ignorant, arogant, inconsiderate, slime that live to try and impress the world with the noise they generate.
Perhaps a wonderful way to rid this island of these ignorant types that like to think they have achieved something on the order of machismo status by how much rubber they can leave on the pavement or how much noise they can impart on the environment is to put out the open proposition.
Cash to the individual exhibitionist brat that can demonstrate skills and excel against a true biker - loss of crotch rocket to the ones that can't meet standard.
I'd be willing to wager the crotch rockets would loose.
It would make this island so much nicer if the brats just grew up.

Noise reduction is good - bravo on this new policy! Other considerations are not relevant. Motorcycles are great, just not when they're demuffled, repetitive, late-at-night kid riders feeling their oats by the hotels and restaurants...
