Hi all,
My parter and I just bought a traditional house on Bonaire (a fixer in Antriol), and we were wondering if anyone has any suggestions for how we might go about buying used furniture on Bonaire. My partner and I both live in San Francisco, and here we have Craig's List, which has been a great source for buying used furniture for our home in the city. I will be visiting Bonaire for six weeks beginning mid-June, and our house in Antriol is absolutely bare. I will need a bed, a table, some chairs, etc. I like to re-use items (as opposed to buying them new). Do any of you currently living on Bonaire happen to have any unwanted furniture that you would be willing to donate or sell for a nominal price to help me out? I do not need anything fancy - just a few serviceable items so I don't have to sit and sleep on the floor. Any help would be greatly appreciated! BTW, I would rent a truck and make my own arrangements for pickup and moving.

Thanks in advance for your help!
-- Anke

hi anke, used furniture is not easy to come by on bonaire...at least in my experience. there isn't much of a selection of new furniture on the island so people seem to hold onto what they have till it falls apart. many properties are sold furnished, ...the sellers are generally leaving the island and don't want the hassle of taking things with them. we have searched porch sales and the ads in the papers and haven't found a lot. good luck

Thanks, Pat! I actually suspected that it might be hard to find used furniture on Bonaire, but I was hoping I was wrong. It does make sense that, if people go to the trouble of importing furniture, they will hang onto it. OK, well, it looks like I'll have to go Ikea-shopping in Miami, and hire a container to have everything shipped. If there's no way around it, I'll just have to bite the bullet, just like everybody else. Thanks for you input!

Anke,

I have been looking into furnishing a house on Bonaire as well.... Unfortunately there is no IKEA in Miami, or in FL, for that matter. In the Miami area, there are a few of those stores that sell unfinished wood furniture. It's usually pretty (comparatively) inexpensive. Here's a link to one of them: http://www.woodyou.com/

I used to live in the keys, so I'd drive up to Miami for shopping trips. The thrift stores, e.g. Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc, in Homestead & Miami usually have some decent stuff for cheap.

Good luck!

People are always leaving Bonaire but you have to grab what's for sale QUICK...

The bulletin board wall at Cultimara, sometimes the 4-Sale paper that comes out monthly has furniture for sale. Nothing that'd help you from CA. If it were me, I wouldn't gamble and count on being able to buy the basics here--I'd buy & ship the minimum from the US (like bed & bed frame-you wouldn't want a used mattress anyway, right?) & comfy chair or two; then worry about the rest when you get here.

There is a shop at Bonaire whiche is called Plantation, it's near Kaya Industria in the old Global Painting Building. You can buy there second-hand furniture as well colonial furniture.
Good Luck!!

An acquaintance from me did buy there a few times second hand furniture, which was exchanged for new furniture. So they do have new furniture as well, that's correct. Mostly big.

Pat, I agree. Really a bit pricey and huge stuff when I stopped by. Loved the solid wood tables and the teak was very nice, but again way to big for my place too. I did see some used furniture there as well. It was in the second room I believe. They did also have some nice tiled wall hanging items with a nautical theme that were nice as well. They were very nice folks and say they get all kinds of new stuff in all the time, so will keep checking in from time to time. Mostly outdoor stuff, living room and dining room furniture when I was there.
