We just returned from Bonaire and wondered if the community voted to become independent from the Dutch government. Did this happen?

Norm, the vote will be in 2007. If you do a keyword search for "government" under "local items" you will get a plethora of info. It has been discussed in length on BT.

How was your trip????????

You have it turned around. The vote was to become closer allied with Holland and away from the Curacao Central government...

Michael, I like your way much better! Carole

(too scary the other way. Didn't Aruba eventually secure closer ties with Holland after many years of their "independence"?)

Cynde, Our trip was outstanding. Dove Buddy's Reef (OW Certification) Rappel, North Bay (on Kleine), Karpata, Andrea I and II, 1000 steps. Of all the Caribbean Islands, this was by far the best. We will be back next year (8 days was simply not enough time).
Everyone was very friendly. (Interesting language)

Michael, thanks to you (and a little birdy) for setting me straight. I thought the vote in 2007 was about LEAVING Holland or not, and the euro nalf vote. Norm, here are 2 good links discussing the topic...it's complicated!

PS, thanks again little birdy:-)

Norm, glad you had a good time. You are hooked for sure if you think 8 days is not enough. Each trip will get longer and longer!

Carole, you too have it turned around. Aruba took status aparte in 1986 to have CLOSER ties with Holland to to break away from Curacao. The have toyed with the idea of complete independance but too date, it has not enough support.

For Aruba, have a look at: http://fotw.vexillum.com/flags/aw.html

(Which, btw, is what Michael Gaynor already stated above)

(Just 5 more days.......)

Michael
