We received an email from TCB and wanted to share with everyone.

"There's a fresh air at Bonaire's police force and we are seeing results.

A total of 8 people have been detained. Boys and girls ranging between 10 and 20 years of age. The latter has to be addressed and there are various initiatives in place to tackle this aspect [the fact that these are young kids]. With these detentions, a total of 34 theft cases have been solved. We are talking about theft cases at different dive locations, restaurants and other tourist related places.

The Police should be thanked and I'm confident that they will continue working hard on these matters.

This is good news and does not mean that all is OK, we still have a lot to do."

Frankly, this to me, is a breath of fresh air. I hope the new police chief continues to work hard on solving the problems...

The purpose of this thread, and discussion is to inform BT'ers of the work being done to decrease crime on the island...not another one of "those threads."

Cynde

Cynde, thanks for the very important, informative post. Glad to see things are going in the right direction. It does sadden me though that the age of the people being caught are so young.

Dear Fellow BTers, Anyone consider a mass emailing to the new Police Chief to express our appreciation. Most of us were quick to condemn the lack of action by the police lately, maybe we should be just as vocal with our praise (positive reinforcement). Just a thought. Best regards, Jack.

I want to say two things about this

1) Good job
2) It's the work of the police, so it's normal they solve cases like this.

I'm not a person to complain, but it's there job to do these things. (this is normal)

But also from me -> nice job :-)

The nice thing about the new Chief is he is not from Bonaire - no family connections (maybe). They have needed someone who will back up the force and let them do their jobs. Even so Bonaire is small it is easy to hide and some people are affraid to say anything least they be the next person who might be robbed.

Jack, emailing the police chief is a good idea. Do you have an email address for him?

Bart, it is normal for most police to do this work, but it has not been being done on Bonaire for a long time. Change is good sometimes:-)

Cynde,

thank you for posting this good news, finally something positive happening there?
I am not on the island, at the moment, so it makes me really happy.
Do you also know if the guys from the armed robbery in Hato are included in this bunch?
I haven'd heard anything anymore about that robbery at all.

Thanks for posting!

Harrie

That is very good news indeed. Does this mean that we now have a place to detain juveniles? It has been my understanding that much of the problem with cracking down on crimes perpetrated by kids has been due to the fact that there is/was no suitable detention facility for them, and that therefore they are/were never detained...

Harrie, I asked about the Hato situation, they had no news to report on that:-(

Alex, I'm not sure about the "holding" facilities. However, it is my understanding that they know they need to deal with the delinquent kids and are working on that.

We heartily agree with Jack and Cynde: the new police chief needs to know that the tourist community is aware of his good work and that we support it.

If anyone can supply an e-dress for him or for someone who can get a message to him, we would appreciate it. In addition, an e-dress for the Reporter would be of interest so that the chief can enjoy deserved commendation in a local public forum.

Thank you.

Well this sure sounds like a great start & obviously we're all for it..
From what I understand the new chief of police on Bonaire was shipped over from Aruba. I'm sure he had is hands full with the Natalie Holloway fiasco over there. So, cleaning up the few misfits on Bonaire should be a simple task in comparison.

Or at least others I know have used that address and it was not returned.

I wonder if there is contact info on Wowo di Bario? I was told they were instrumental in the resolution pertaining to Windsock. They visited me after the break in as I live nearby and also the victims were my clients. Thanks.

Ann,

As a fellow Belnemian who benefits from Wowo's presence in the area, do you contribute to the Wowo kitty? (It's about NAF 100/month, and goes down as the number of participants increase) If not, might I suggest you join in? We work through Richard at Coco Palm on this.

Jake

Today's Bonaire Reporter has 2 notes (one from the Editors and one from a householder who was burglarized) praising the island police for recent prompt and professional responses.

I hope this is a permanent trend!
