So my fiance' and I are going on holiday during the month of October. I heard that you get like all your rain from october through january. We are divers of course, and we will be there during the third week. What should I expect?

Thanks

Andrew

I first came to the island the third week of October, 2004. Bone dry. By the time I returned in early December, the dry field south of Kaya Industria was a meter deep lake.

Third week of October, 2005, I left the island to see my nephew's wedding. The dry field south of Kaya Industria was a dry field. Fourth week of October, 2005, I returned, and the dry field south of Kaya Industria was a half-meter deep.

My belief is that the third week of October is the turning point between dry and wet, and probably no one can predict for you whether you will hit the dry side or the wet side.

When I first began coming to Bonaire many years ago, wet season was November into January.
By the time I moved to Bonaire 3+ years ago, changes in world weather patterns caused by global warming had lengthened the season.
Nobody can really tell you now, Andrew.
Bonaire is an arid island. Sometimes we go months without any rain. Even during rainy season, we have dry periods, and the rain often falls only two minutes, often during the night. Only rarely do we have a "rainy day." Those are spawned by hurricanes many miles away from us.
No point is your worrying about this. Schedule your vacation when it's convenient for you. Chances are you will have lots of sunshine here.
And you can dive in the rain. :-)

I have to agree with Kevin, the rain usually starts the end of October. However, October is known for little wind and being very hot...

So you will want to be in the water as much as possible and a passing rainshower is definitely welcome!

Liz

Ask Kelly how hot it is in the beginning of October...he he...Kelly, you out there? Especially since Bonaire is like 3 miles from the sun at that time of year ;-)

Andrew--
We've made quite a few of our trips in October; I think it's actually my favorite time of year. There's usually very few tourists on island -- seems like summer vacation is over (very few families vacationing) and it's not quite winter so people are not vacationing to warmer climates. Restaurants never seem crowded in October, rarely any wait for a table and reservations pretty much unnecessary IMO.

Yeah, sometimes the wind dies down and it feels real hot, but October is also usually the time of year when the water temperature peaks; usually 83 or 84 degrees, sometimes higher. Rain tends to be of the intense but very short shower variety, usually at night or early morning, but sometimes not a drop during our week or two stay. IMHO October rocks on Bonaire.

It feels like you are three feet from the surface of the sun. Seriously.

When locals - who normally subscribe to that ridiculous notion that "you get used to the heat" say, "man, it's pretty hot, yes?" you KNOW it's hot!

When your toenail polish MELTS, that's hot !

When you can lose weight just sitting on the couch watching a movie... THAT'S hot!

(I sound like Jeff Foxworthy now... lol...)

Just a small warning about October. That is when the Regatta takes place. After being there during that time this last October, I'll remember not to be there for Regatta again. I've been in July, September (twice), March, and October. Regatta was the 'most crowded' I've ever experienced. The town during the day and night was packed and traffic was too much for me. I deal with that on a daily basis in So Cal, so when I go to Bonaire I don't want to have to deal with traffic...
