We are moving to Bonaire in July of August and are thinking about getting a dog. Are there reliable dog breeders on Bonaire or should we get a dog in the Netherlands and bring it to Bonaire?

The animal shelter on Bonaire has many wonderful dogs and puppies who need homes.

Please consider adopting an island dog who is suited to Bonaire rather than purchasing a purebred. There are so many unwanted cats and dogs. You would really be serving Bonaire well. I have visited the shelter on Bonaire and can assure you there are many loving cats, dogs, and puppies who would love a permanent home.

Good tip. Any dog experts on the island who can spot the right character (child friendly!!!) in a pup?

Hello Bas, I'm sure the folks at the Shelter can help you with that, as they will have gotten to know the dogs while taking care of them, but you can also hire Elly Albers, who is a dog trainer, and who lives on the island, to assist you. Good luck with your move.

bonaire has it's own breeds of dogs. some people call them bonairean corgis...short dogs with no legs. matter of fact there was an article about them in the reporter a year or two ago talking about how they were going to be officially recognized as a breed (ok, it was the april fools issue but it was still in the paper...LOL)

I definitely second the suggestion to pick a pet from the Animal Shelter -- I adopted two kittens from there last year, and it was a wonderful experience. Jurri and the other people there are very caring and will help you find the perfect pet for your family.

I have used Yella to mind my dog Luci when she was a puppy. She is great. When I am out of the country, I find pet sitters who stay at my house and take care of my 2 dogs and 5 cats. Most are from BT or windsurf friends. I am blessed having met some incredible people who love my animals and care for my home while I am gone.

Please be very good informed before you bring a dog to Bonaire. I recently found out that no cats, dogs or birds are allowed to be imported from South America. if you wanna be sure it seems that the customs office on Bonaire is the only one who can provide you the right answers in this case. Specially with the bird decease rules can changes by the day. and what is said before, the shelter is having great dogs. And maybe it is more important to see if your kids are dog friendly then if a dog is childfriendly. good luck.

As far as I know they must have a passport with medical history, have their Rabis shots and a health certificate, but becuz rules can change sometimes please inform at customs. I heared today that a sick man who needed to be treated on Curacao is held in quarantain for 5 days there. So expect the unexpected and have fun.
