do you get e news? Jake explained it in pretty understandable terms, unfortunately the central gov. does not quite grasp the serious hardship it will place on the local poplulation. It was indeed passed and supposed to go in effedt the first of Oct. I do expect some sort of tax rebellion. The people are being unjustly taxed to pay for services they do not receive and also for debts they did not incur. Hopefully, the Island government will lead the tax revolt. It works for Sint Maartin, why not Bonaire. You can access e new from this website...

How about us folks that have pre-paid for our vacation packages? Is the government going to hit us up for an additional 3% after we have already paid?

Sounds like you guys need to have a recall election if the new tax proposal doesn't have popular support.

The Central Government of the Netherlands Antilles, definitely not to be confused with the local Bonairean government, will certainly be hitting up someone for the extra 3%, and it will depend on your hotel, tour operators, and other Bonairean business you've prepaid for as part of a package on whether that 3% is passed through or absorbed.

In terms of a recall election, I don't know if it's possible to do with those elected into the Antillean Parliament, but if it is, I suspect it's being worked on, as two of the three Bonairean representatives to Parliament actually voted in favor of the increase in apparent disregard of the will of the Bonairean community.

Excuse me, how do I go about to get E-news? Somewhere in this site? You see, I must confess, I only come directly to the BB and don't really browse through the whole site.

As to the Bonairean representatives of Parliament, I guess they feel they owe more loyalty to Parliament than to the ppl of Bonaire. Them being part of the coalition, they must have felt that they might be voting against themselves have they voted "NO". This meaning that the feeling of the ppl meant 'zilch' to them. What bothers me most is that none of them really bother to explain to the ppl, like you would to a 6 yr old (to make sure EVERYONE understands), why they HAD to vote yes, notwithstanding what the ppl wished for.

I hope this sounds and is interpreted like i have it in my mind. English not being my native language makes it at times a bit difficult to get the whole meaning, or one has to be able to read between the lines. ....

I will now be going to the E-news, meaning that i might have been painfully redundant at this point, :) so sorry,

Let's try to see what we can come up with. St Maarten not only stonewalled the central government but they had a plan, they came up with an alternative w/o having to organize any 'manifesto' ... Have our government (both the old and the new one) lack in initiatives when they had the time to come up with alternatives?? ...

Omg, y'all got me started now ......

Please continue. Our representatives are acting like "spoiled children" and would rather shoot the Bonaireans in the foot than work to find a solution. Sint Maartin pointed to the hardship factor and that the people would just shop on the French Side if taxes were raised. Interestingly enough, many people in Bonaire shop in Curacao, including GROCERIES, where prices are up to 50% cheaper...the cost of shipping and plane tickets still save them money. It appears that the average man in street, who voiced his dissent, is being ignored. I for one, would love to see the members of Parliament who sunk Bonaire, be removed in a recall vote, however, I don't believe it is possible under present law.
