Bon Dia,
Can anyone please tell me if Hoppner House is still operating? I will be on Bonaire Feb 3 and would like to bring some items for the kids.
My girlfriend is a teacher and has access to many educational materials. Also, would clothes, sporting goods and the like come in handy?
Masha Danki,
Frank Barulli

Yes, it is still operating and they can always use help. All/any of what you suggested for bringing can come in handy for them. Their web site may help you out http://www.infobonaire.com/hoppnerfoundation/index.html as to what is needed and helpful. Number 2 lead pencils are good because the pencils they get there wear out quickly. Hanes underwear is a frequent request because what they can get is not good quality and does not last long. I also try to bring pencils, crayons, glue sticks, and paper (white and colored) and markers. Some of this makes for heavy luggage though. Your girl friend probably may have other ideas too :-) .... The younger boys really like match box cars. I am a sponsor of one of the boys there and visited in May and Oct '04. It was great. If you have any other specific questions feel free to email me dkacavas@maine.rr.com Thank You for thinking about the boys ! Denise

It sure is Frank. I was there last week and I think it's a wonderful thing they have running there. I'll post a (kinda) report of the foundation later (if I've found some time to write it)

And I agree with Denise, THANX for thinking about this wonderful project!

Marin, did you see Patty and Juni and the younger boys when there?

I just got a nice card from Patty and a couple of pictures Juni colored for Teddy and me. He's getting much better at staying inside the lines :-) And Patty tells me he is doing great in school.

Frank, Welcome to Bonaire Talk. Thank you and your girlfriend for thinking of the Maria Hoppner Foundation.

Do contact Denise, she is an excellent source of information and contacts at MHF. She was instrumental in arranging one of the best days, I ever had on Bonaire, it involved spending some time snorkeling with Juni and others.

Everyone who visits this thread:

If you ever have extra room in your luggage, and are willing to take items to MHF, please private message me through my profile page.

Denise, no problem... :-)

We did meet Patty briefly, we have been talking to Elly most of the time.

Elly seems very nice too. I have only talked with her through email. When we went to Bonaire in May we had trouble getting responses and ended up getting to know Patty. Since Patty is Juni's group leader we've built a relationship with her. Jake and Linda know Elly well too :-)

I know, we met Elly at Linda and Jake's pot-luck BBQ. (well, we met earlier, but we didn't knew she was involved in the foundation).

Is there a foundation/home for girls on Bonaire? If so what is the name and where is it located.

Andy

I am in the process of making reservations to Bonaire during the 1st part of Feb. In the mean time, from looking over the thread and the needs of "House", I see the need of a digital camera. Since I happen to work for Kodak AND have access to digital STUFF, I have found that I can bring down some cameras to the "House". But I need some help from the folks on Bonaire - namely the system(s)they are using (Window 98?, XP?)and if the have USB ports on theor computer(s). I plan on bringing down whatever is needed, plus inkjet paper if needed.
Plus, if someone can help me setup while I am there, then I know there is someone who can help out when I leave.
OK folks who can help me out on this one??? I have a bunch of people here at Kodak who are stepping up to get get this movong!!!

Sue: Good for you. We live in Rochester, also. (Xerox folks, though!), and will be in Bonaire from 2/15 on.

If this is your first trip to Dushi Bonaire and you want further information, let me know. Perhaps we can have coffee somewhere and I'll share what I know from my last seven trips... I just love telling people about my favorite place.

Also, if you don't have everything ready by the time you leave, we can also bring stuff down. My dentist has donated a box each of toothbrushes and toothpaste that I bring down, but we can always stuff in more.
