Yesterday we visited a concert of Izaline Calister, and it was a great performance, I have to tell my experiences about it.
Izaline is a singer from Curacao, who did a show in Plaza Resort, the Tipsy Seagull. There were just some 300 people, (Bonaire is definitely too small for artists of this level).
Izaline and her band make music, principally caribic based, but with quite some jazz-influences, also the African roots of most Caribic people can be heard, and even some Aboriginal (native Australian) influences are integrated. The songs are sung in Papiamentu. It was a great concert, the band was marvellous,
(8 persons, of which three “magambas”, three percussionists, two background singers, and a special remark for the guy behind the keyboards, Eric Calmes, who won an Edison, he was really great). But most impressive was Izaline herself, she is not only beautiful, has very, very expressive eyes, moves very sensual, but most important she sings her songs with a beautiful voice, and an expression, unknown on the Caribbean. Despite the small amount of spectators, Izaline and her band made a marvellous show, nearly two hours non-stop.
I know, Izaline Calister comes from Curacao, has studied in the Netherlands (economics), and BonaireTalk is specially for Bonaire-related things. But this concert was too good to let it go for the many Caribbean-lovers on here. If you ever get the chance to see her perform life, don’t miss it, or at least go to a CD-shop and listen to one of her three CD’s. I am sure you can find her CD’s on the airport-shop of Curacao, and in the CD-shops on Bonaire too. I don’t know if her CD’s are sold in the USA already, but in Europe (Netherlands, Germany, France) she is already quite well-known. Want to know more, look at her website: www.izalinecalister.com, where you also find samples of her last two CD’s. Personally I like the CD “Krioyo” the best, it is the less jazzy one.

Just one remark, the concert was announced for 7:30pm, and started just at 9pm. The organisation around the concert was poor, Plaza should take better precautions and organise these kind of things better for a possible next concert.

Remember her name: Izaline Calister!

Harrie

I went to the concert, Izaline was wonderful and full of talent. but the organization was a chaos,Harrie is right :Plaza must work a lot in a future presentation,concert,show.etc. the organization around the concert was POOR. Izaline Calister is a high level artist and I want to see her again and again But in better conditions !

N0 3 'MAKAMBA'S....

The pianist is Randall Corsen, our own 'yu di Kòrsou' who won the Edison for his recent cd 'Evolushon' (I'm sure Izaline must have mentioned this at least a couple of times during the show...) Eric Calmes plays the bass, Ulrich de Jesus guitar, Pernell Saturnino , and also makamba-looking but Curaçao-born Martin Verdonk, percussions. Roel Callister (playes everything that makes sound): chapi, benta, give him any strange looking object and he will play it!. Backup singers were Niata Augusta and Arlette Koeijers (who, btw, plays a great guitar in Curacao's 'Grupo Serenada'!)
Izaline and Randall will be back on Curacao in december, they say it's for a vacation... will their definition of 'vacation' include at least 1 perfomance?
(thank you, Harrie for the link)

Kari,
Thanks for correcting me on Randall, my Papiamentu is not too good....
I meant to say with "Magamba's", that they were white-skinned, compared to the all-black Izaline...
Please keep us informed about performances, if you get the information....

Hello Jill

As she was in Bonaire recently I assume that her cd's must be available there. If not, why not hop over to Curaçao for a day or two and buy them here?

Kari

Hello Jill,

I will take a look in the CD-shop in town if Izaline is for sale there, and will let you know. BTW we were in the airport-shop on Curacao, some days ago, and there her CD's were all sold out....

Hello Jill,

Did my homework, and sorry at this moment No Izaline Calister in the CD-shop in Bonaire. The guy said "perhaps next week", but I know that answer, normally it doesn't mean anything. Not good news up to now.

I ordered her CD "Krioyo" from Amazon.com ($19.95 USD) in August and it just arrived last week. Worth the wait.

Yesterday there was a programme on Dutch television for the Antilles (BVN = Beste van Nederland) to celebrate the 50-year existence of the "Statuut van het Koninkrijk". (The constitution of the Kingdom). There were several artists and a lot of (stupid) talks, but the last and the best artist was Izaline. She performed "Dushi" (Wow'i Karino) live and it was great. Just one song she was allowed to do, but it was again enough to put us in flames. I captured it on video-tape, just missed the first part.

Was great!

I saw that program too, Harrie, it was broadcasted yesterday on Dutch television. It was very nice, and indeed I loved Izaline! Funny was also that I knew the pianist who played with the Aruban singer (forgot her name, she sang about Aruba). He lives in Holland, and we often see him at baseball games. Nice to hear some Papiamentu, since we are learning it, good to notice that I could understand parts of the songs.

Thanks, Monique, for the Bol.com-link.

But for myself I bought already the CD's during the concert at Plaza. Actually it is her husband who does the merchandise...
I was just looking for Jill Ganderton, who couldn't find her CD's for sale in Canada, and who will visit Bonaire soon. We found a way to get her CD's directly now.

BTW, Izaline Calister is normally for sale in the better CD-shops in the Netherlands, at least in the eastern part of the netherlands, in places near to the German border. She is much better known in Germany as in the Netherlands, a shame. She also works with a German CD-trading company. "Network Medien GMBH",Merianplatz 10,D-60316 Frankfurt.

It is not easy to find her in the shops, I saw "Mariposa" filed under "Jazz", and "Krioyo" under "World-music".

Harrie
