Bon Tarde,

This Sunday (24 October 2004), on Mega FM Bonaire 101.1 at 12 noon until 1:00 pm, at least three groups of victims of the perpetrators of the most recent attack will be interviewed on Shawn's weekly english language live talk show program.

A tape of the interview will be rebroadcast on FM 97.1 immediately after, at 100:pm

Most people on the island probably already know about this. I'm posting here because you can stream Mega FM 101.1 live over the internet.

Also, on Monday, a new reward poster will appear. This will will have a sketch and physical description of the thugs and again, will be plastered all over the island.

Roger, do they know the identity of the perpetrators? It sounds like they do based on what you said, "three groups of victims of the perpetrators of the most recent attack". It's a small island, why on earth can't they find them? How do they know it's all the same people? Thank you for any information.

Thank you for the information on the interview, I will try to listen in.

Kelly,

I was trying to be clear:

  • There is a gang of three & possibly four bad guys.
  • There have been at least three incidents in the last months with the same MO (modus operandi).
  • All of the victims of these three incidents agree that the same perpetrators are involved.
As far as I have heard (talked to the most recent victims early this afternoon) the identities are not known.

There are no shortages of theories as to "why" they have not been arrested. Trot out your favorite.

If their identities are not known, how can they be arrested???? 'John Doe' warrants???

There was also an interview with Ramoncito Booi in the Algemeen Dagblad from today (will be aired at Radio Nederland). He was in Holland and requested urgent help from Holland to fight crime on Bonaire... he says he knows that Curacao has a problem with Dutch police coming, but Bonaire does not have this problem. He will wait a few weeks (I guess that Holland has to have the time to sort out the problem of the request, which should have been made by the Central Government on Curacao) and if nothing happens than he has to go to the Kingdom Parlament and request the help (article 26 of the statut of the Kingdom .. he says).
In todays Extra and the one from Wednesday are several articles concerning the police force, one of them has the titel "Daantje has to be moved"

Roger,

I clicked on your "stream" to test listen and it tells me this file no longer exists.

Do they only air certain times?

Thanks

Liz

Glen; The identities are not known to us civilians. I'll let the police speak for themselves.

Liz; I'm just passing on the link. I refuse to install any RealAudio product, so I'm unable to try the link. Did you install the "(Download recommended Player)" link at the top middle of the page? It wants to install
RealPlayer10GOLD_bb.exe. Once you've installed this, you click on the speaker icon to actually play the audio.

Lizzie, it's working for me right now....maybe they do only air for specific hours. I have to remember to log on tomorrow at noon to hear these poor folks....I hope they do find and punish whomever is responsible for these vicious attacks. Try the link again, OK? How ya doin'??? Well, I hope. Ayo. Carole

Thank you for letting us know about the broadcast and what information you do know, Roger. We do appreciate it very much.

I'm with Roger. Anything that requires a RealAudio product I'll have to just pass on as I refuse to install their software on this computer. Real Player wants to associate itself with everything on your computer by default, it wants to run on startup, and it phones home without telling you.

Well, we just listened to the radio show, and wow...

There were three guests - Larry (someone with an accent reminiscent of India or Pakistan) who moved to Bonaire 2 years ago with his wife; Elvis Tjin-Asjoe - born on Bonaire and a well known local business man; and Barbara & Albert (the victims upon whom this series of threads is based).

All three related their experiences (and in Elvis' case that of his wife) with the three men dressed in dark clothes, invading homes, looking for money.

While in all three cases the victims were bound and restrained, it was only in the latest crime that the criminals resorted to physical violence.

In any event, the broadcast was both compelling and stunning. I've dropped a note to one of the producers at MegaFM to see if he can make it available as an MP3 or something.

All of the participants, and especially Albert and Barbara are to be commended for their bravery in both surviving the ordeal, but also speaking out and doing what they can both to put away the guys responsible, as well as looking forward to try and find ways to avoid repeats of similar crimes in the future (which is a deep societal issue everywhere).

Sean is planning on doing 3 more programs over the coming 3 Sundays to discuss various aspects of these crimes - including analysis of the police efforts, the work of the prosecutor, etc.

Jake,

Did the victims state their addresses? Is there one neighborhood being hit?

It is great Sean is putting this on the forefront in another forum.

Larry & Elvis live in Kralendijk, so no, this is not just a Sabadeco-oriented crime "situation" (as Sean put it).

Jake, in the first two cases where there was not physical violence, was it because the criminals found what they wanted where as in the third case they had very little $ in the house?
Based on what was stated in the show, is it fairly obviously the same criminals in each case?
I tuned in too late and missed the radio show.
How are the police responding to the criticism of their efforts regarding these crimes?

From the radio show, the impression I got was that none of the people had much money at home. Also, Barbara and Albert described that the violence started almost immediately.

In terms of it being the same criminals, the implication was that the modus operandi (M.O.) was very similar in all three cases (and apparently there have been more similar cases). The M.O. including the clothing, the language spoken (Papiamentu), and the fact that three men were involved each time.

No idea how the police are responding, although the clip from Albert's report in the other new thread in Local Items is not encouraging in terms of procedural matters. Maybe Brigitte can pipe in with what's been in the Extra newspaper (she did mention there was a call to get rid of police chief Daantje in the paper last week).

There was also the same kind of article in the AlgDagblad and the Amigoe (both in Dutch) - I paste below the one from the Amigoe for whom can read Dutch .
Neither Papiamento nor Dutch are my mother language, but I am better in Dutch than in Papiamento .... the Extra article had a complete different title and was (at least to me) somehow more negativ for Daantje ... in the same Extra was also an article critizising Daantje to have allowed police agents to be involved in a security company at the Plaza Resort ....

Short translation of the article below:
There has been a meeting of the Central Commission of the Central Parlament where Mr. Joopie Abrahams as ask questions concerning the removable of Mr. Daantje from his current job at head of police on Bonaire. One of the questions from Mr. Abrahams was if that removable is political motivated and if it is not the case that the possible replacement is somebody who will be dumpd on to Bonaire for also political reasons.
Reply from Minister of Justice that is not the case. Mr. Daantje has ask quite a while ago for another function, but als the Central Government has changed 3 times in the last year, this has not happend. And is not that easy to find an equevaltent function for Mr. Daantje seen his high rank. The new department of automatisation in the ministery is budgeted now, so the function of head of police on Bonaire is vacant and and it is an open solicitation procedure. Mr. Ribeiro (the minister of justice) has talked to Mr. Panneflek from St.Maarten but a decision has not been made yet .....

My personal comment: I wonder what Joopie Abrahams is thinking !!! Another political game absolut not in the interest of the people of Bonaire ????? Will he never learn ????

Antwoord op vragen over overplaatsing politiechef
22 Okt, 2004, 7:03pm

Personally I found the interview with Ramoncito Booi very interesting ... I mentioned it further above in the thread .... if he is willing to even go to the Kingdom Parlament to get Dutch police to the island, that should (think positiv .. stay optimistic) really help ... another head of police and the old majors, that will never work !!!
The broom has to go through all parts of the department ... also customs and immigration need to change drastically.

About this brutal attack,we don´t need another one. the interview with Ramoncito Booi........... well I think he can do much more, we need more policeman in the streets,a serious fight against the drugs, more educative plans and more jobs. this is the real homework for the politics.

J.J. from your regular replys I got the impression you live on Bonaire ?!?!
One more time: The politicians on Bonaire have as good as NO influence on police, immigration, custom, education ....(as we have no real- 4% is normal in any country - unimployment your job comment is not really relevant). And that is the reason that the referendum in mid September showed 85% of the Bonaireans want to leave the Netherlands Antilles and want to be a more direct part of The Netherlands.
Mr. Booi is ready to make the big step to go to the Kingdom Parlament - to complain officially about Curacao and to give up part of Bonaire autonomy to get help as soon as possible - and yes, that is a biiiggg step !!!
