I'm hoping to close on the sale of a property in Chapel Hill, NC on 6 July 2004, being represented at the closing by the real estate agent.

I just received a package including the deed for signature from the closing attorney. It included all kinds of dire warnings that the deed will not be accepted for recording if the notary to my signature does not include the county and state granting his/her commission and the expiration date of said commission. As these requirements are not applicable to Mr Maartense, I'm thinking that, if possible, the simplest thing to do would be to see if I can locate a US notary on the island to do this for me.

Does anyone know of such?

Thanks, Pete Brown

Ask Jake Richter; seem to remember that he is/was a notary.

Pete,

We had to do the same thing. Basically you have to bring 2 witnesses with ID and have a notary public sign and stamp it. THE SIGNING OF SIGNATURES MUST BE DONE IN THE PRESENCE OF A NOTARY. Do not sign the documents prior to this as a Notary will not sign and stamp. Look in the phone book or try a realtor's office. They usually charge a nominal fee.

Thanks.

Glen and Liz, thanks. Christine, would that you were scheduled to arrive a few days earlier. Since the express mail package with the deed took six days to get here, and what with the Fourth of July holiday intervening, I thought I'd best proceed and see what the Notary Office had to say. Actually, they gave me the famous Bonairean 'no problem' response when I went in to talk to them, saying they'd just doctor their notarization to 'fit' the form. That's apparently worked elsewhere in the States; let's just hope it'll work in Orange County, NC. They put 'Bonaire' in the space for state, and 'Netherlands Antilles' in the space for 'county' (close to 'country,' right?) and put 'lifetime' in the form where it asked for the expiration date of the commission. We'll see....

I had Governor's Appointment to a State Board here in AZ notarized in Belize a few years ago and it not only worked, I get a letter every year from the Secretary of State (every year, I have no idea why) congratulating me on my resourcefulness in finding a notary in a foreign country. Also, the the package came to Ambergris Cay Fedex (apparently a big deal), so for the rest of the week I was

You da mon who got dat fedex packahge

Good Luck

Glen,

I'm not a notary. Just a Registered Patent Agent :-)

Jake (living out of boxes at the moment, and ecstatic to have an Internet connection again)

Jake,

Hopefully Mr Maartense's patch job will work for the folks back in NC. Hope your relocation has gone (is going?) smoothly.

Joe,

Who did you dive through when you were on Ambergris Caye?

Kay, the brain aint working......I wanna think maybe Reef Divers, but it was part of a package. I remember being quite a bit less than impressed, big boats (MOOOOOO), fairly good equipment, good DM's, but a real mix of experienced and inexperienced divers in groups that kind of led to an attention level that really wasn't fair to either newbies or experienced divers. This was like 7 or 8 years ago and I'm sure things have changed since then, but if I was going back, I'd look at one of the smaller ops with smaller boats. Recognize, Ambergris aint even Bonaire, next to no real shore diving, relatively long boat rides. AC is a great place to visit, excellent food, very easy walking to anything, but for diving, i personally would choose Bonaire.
