Over the past few months I have seen messages about the development of Klein Bonaire.I understand there is a movement to purchase and preserve the island. My question is this,is it a realistic possibility?
Certainly a lot of money has been invested in Bonaire over the 18 years that I have been comeing there so I would think the cost of purchaseing this property would be substantial. What are the chances of this happening? Mickey

There has been a movement to purchase and preserve the island for several years now, but the owners have not been willing to deal. Late last month the government passed a nature policy plan, which in effect makes it impossible for the owner of the island to develop on Klein Bonaire, and basically makes the value of the land minimal at a commercial level. Part of the plan is that the government, via STINAPA and the Bonaire Marine Park, has control of the 50 meters of land from the water inland - once you figure out how much that is it doesn't leave much.

Add to that the fact that anyone wanting to do construction would have to cross this zone with heavy equipment (a major no-no since it's now protected), as well as have to get permission from the island government to build (which they have repeatedly refused to give, even as recently as a few weeks ago), and you have preservation of Klein Bonaire :-)

Good news Jake, and thanks for your quick response.
Next question. What`s the situation with the water and power generation. The physical plant doesn`t seem to have changed much over the years. Also I`m pretty sure the waste management must be severly strained.Have you any comments? Thanks again Mickey

I second that emotion! I am sure that this is a very happy culmination of the hard work of a lot of people.
